Cicconi Assistant to the President and Deputy to the Chief of Staff Ext. 2702 Sheehan 9/27/89 Draft One 1989 SEP 28 PM 6: 49 Gas PROPOSED VIDEO MESSAGE INTERSTATE NATURAL GAS ASSOCIATION Good morning. I'm pleased to welcome you to the 45th Annual Meeting of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America. I know many of my friends from the oil and gas industry are in the audience today. I'd like to extend a special greeting to Ken Lay, the outgoing chairman of INGAA, and his lovely wife Linda. The theme of this year's INGAA Annual Meeting is the 1990s as the decade of opportunity for natural gas to meet the energy and environmental needs of our nation. You could hardly have chosen a more timely or appropriate topic. You know of my belief in the importance of a sound energy policy based on plentiful and secure domestic fuel sources, and my conviction that natural gas can and should play a major part in the development of that policy. I know that you are excited by the prospects for natural gas in the 1990s, and I'm pleased the gas industry has been able to put aside some of its historical differences and work together to seize those opportunities. The support of all segments of the industry was essential in passing the legislation that ended 35 years of government control of natural gas prices. I thank you for your support of that initiative and also for your endorsement of this administration's clean air proposals. Clean-burning natural gas, used in such technologies as co-firing can significantly improve the nation's environmental quality. 2 I'm sorry my schedule didn't permit me to attend your meeting personally, but I know you have a distinguished line-up of speakers to address the many issues of concern to you all. Best wishes for a successful Annual Meeting. Thank you. # # # # Sheehan 9/27/89 Draft One Gas PROPOSED VIDEO MESSAGE INTERSTATE NATURAL GAS ASSOCIATION Good morning.
