IT'S ALWAYS WONDERFUL TO RETURN TO THE "CRESCENT CITY", ESPECIALLY ON THE EVE OF WHAT PROMISES TO BE ANOTHER GREAT SUPER BOWL. AND I WANT TO THANK JACK KEMP, ONE OF PRO FOOTBALL'S GREATEST ALUMNI, FOR STANDING IN FOR ME TONIGHT. I'M TOLD THAT WHEN BOB HOPE ACCEPTED THE FIRST "OLD HERO AWARD" HE REMARKED THAT NOT ONLY DID HE NOT FEEL MUCH LIKE A HERO, BUT HE DIDN'T FEEL ALL THAT OLD EITHER. I'LL SECOND BOTH HIS SENTIMENTS THIS EVENING. WHILE IT'S A GREAT HONOR TO BE THE CO-RECIPIENT OF THIS YEAR'S PRESTIGIOUS AWARD, I WOULD BE REMISS NOT TO HIGHLIGHT THE HEROS OF COVENANT HOUSE WHO FIGHT LONELINESS, HOPELESSNESS, AND DRUG USE AMONG OUR YOUNG PEOPLE EVERY DAY. WHENEVER THERE'S A LOST OR LONELY VOICE CALLING OUT FOR HELP IN NEW ORLEANS OR SEVERAL OTHER CITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY, CHANCES ARE THAT A COVENANT HOUSE VOLUNTEER WILL BE THERE TO LISTEN. - 2 - AND I'D ALSO LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR HONORING BARBARA THIS EVENING. IN 45 YEARS OF MARRIAGE, SHE HAS BEEN AT MY RIGHT HAND AND A ROLE MODEL OF GRACE UNDER PRESSURE AND CONCERN FOR OTHERS. IN HER SPARE TIME, AND IT'S A MARVEL THAT SHE HAS ANY, BARBARA WORKS TO HELP STAMP OUT ILLITERACY. IT'S A TALL ORDER, A CONDITION THAT AFFECTS MILLIONS OF AMERICANS, BUT IF ANYONE CAN HELP SOLVE IT, I KNOW IT'S BARBARA. LET ME CLOSE BY ACKNOWLEDGING THE WORK OF THE NFL ALUMNI. AS ROLE MODELS FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE; YOU HAVE A TREMENDOUS RESPONSIBILITY -- NOT ONLY DURING YOUR PLAYING DAYS BUT AFTERWARDS -- THAT EACH OF YOU READILY ACCEPTS. AND THROUGH GENEROUS EVENTS LIKE TONIGHT'S, YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE. BARBARA JOINS ME IN THANKING YOU FOR THE "OLD HERO" AWARD. HAVE A GREAT EVENING, AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL. # # # VIDEO MESSAGE FOR THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE FEDERATION THE FUTURE OF OUR ENVIRONMENT MEANS MORE THAN THE FUTURE OF YOUR LOCAL PARK, OR EVEN A COMMUNITY -- IT MEANS THE FUTURE OF OUR WORLD. EACH OF US HAS A ROLE TO PLAY IN SAFEGUARDING OUR ENVIRONMENT. AND NOTHING GIVES ME MORE CONFIDENCE IN OUR YOUNG GENERATION THAN TO SEE WHAT THEY'RE DOING TO PROTECT THE GIFTS THAT NATURE HAS GIVEN US. GOVERNMENT CAN'T DO IT ALONE. EVERY AMERICAN HAS TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE -- TO RECYCLE, CONSERVE ENERGY, OR JUST PLANT A TREE -- BECAUSE IF EVERYONE FINDS A WAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, WE WILL PRESERVE OUR PRECIOUS EARTH. # # # VIDEO MESSAGE FOR THE FINE FOUNDATION LAST SEPTEMBER, I INVITED OUR NATION'S GOVERNORS TO JOIN ME AT AN HISTORIC EDUCATION SUMMIT. THERE WE AGREED TO WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE EDUCATION FOR ALL AMERICANS AND PREPARE AMERICA FOR THE 21ST CENTURY. ONE IMPORTANT WAY TO WORK TOWARDS THIS GOAL IS TO RECOGNIZE PROMISING SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS THAT DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE. WELL, I AM so PLEASED TO SEE THAT IOWA, A STATE WHICH HAS LONG TAKEN THE LEAD IN EDUCATION, IS ONCE AGAIN LEADING THE NATION BY DEVELOPING AN OUTSTANDING WAY TO RECOGNIZE AND ENCOURAGE EXCELLENCE IN ITS SCHOOLS. THROUGH THE PROGRAMS OF IOWA'S FINE FOUNDATION, SCHOOLS ARE EVALUATED ON THEIR PROGRESS, RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE LESSONS LEARNED AT ONE SCHOOL ARE SHARED THROUGHOUT THE STATE. THIS IS JUST THE KIND OF EXCEPTIONAL PROGRAM GOVERNOR BRANSTAD AND I TALKED ABOUT AT THE EDUCATION SUMMIT. PROGRAMS LIKE THE FINE FOUNDATION'S ARE A MODEL FOR HOW WE CAN STRIVE TO MAKE THE IMPROVEMENTS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE THIS NATION'S CHILDREN WITH THE BEST EDUCATION POSSIBLE. - 2 - THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION TO EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. # # # THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON January 16, 1990 MEMORANDUM FOR CHRISS WINSTON DEPUTY ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT FOR COMMUNICATIONS FROM: NELSON LUND ASSOCIATE of COUNSEL TO THE PRESIDENT SUBJECT: Presidential Taping Session: (1) The FINE Foundation, (2) the National Wildlife Federation and (3) NFL Alumni "Old Hero" Awards Dinner At the request of James W. The National Wildlife Federation and the Discovery Channel are teaming up to produce a television special that will reveal ways in which middle and high school students unknowingly contribute. to the causes of environmental problems. But more importantly, it will highlight the work of students nationwide who are finding innovative ways of solving those problems. Through their # example, we hope to empower thousands of other students to "make a difference." A brief Presidential message stressing the importance of individual action to save the environment will go a long way toward impressing students with the need to get involved.
