I appreciate this opportunity to play a small part in the 1990 Massachusetts Republican State Convention. You know this is a pretty special gathering because it marks the beginning of the end for the one party system in the Bay State. Over a year-and-a-half has passed since we embarked on an adventure that began at another convention -- the last Republican National Convention in New Orleans. At that time, President Ronald Reagan and the Republicans were at the helm and America was enjoying the longest era of peacetime prosperity in our history. But many wondered if Republicans had reached the end of the road.. if it was time for a change. Well, it was time for a change. And when the American people went to the polls, they once again chose our Republican Party because they agreed -- we are the change. Today, Massachusetts confronts economic instability, irresponsible fiscal management and the terrible fear of drugs and crime. This November, Republicans will again be the party of change by offering sound fiscal management, a responsible tax reform program, and a tough approach to crime that is long overdue. Each of you here today are a part of that change. Each of you here today can make a difference for your Party, your family and your state. You know, I can still remember my days as a county chairman -- the envelope stuffing, the sore feet from walking door-to-door in the Texas heat, the tough contests in a state where "Republican" was practically a foreign word in those days. But we never gave up. We fought the good fight, and today, Texas is a solid two-party state. We've seen alot of change over the past year - dramatic change as people from Managua to Moscow sought the liberty and freedom we enjoy. I can't think of a better time than this year -- a year when all things seem possible -- for Republican dreams in Massachusetts to come true. Barbara and I send our very best wishes to all of you. May God bless you and may God bless the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Thank you.
