THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release
April 17, 1990
REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT
IN CEREMONY HONORING
NCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS
The Rose Garden
2:19 P.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: Well, please be seated. First, let me
salute our members of Congress who are here, Senators Reid and Bryan
and Representatives Bilbray and Vucanovich and Kolbe. Coaches, of
course, Tara Van Derveer and Jerry Tarkanian; and the athletic
directors are with us, Andy Geiger, Brad Rothermel. And I also want
to single out a couple from our administration, Mike Boskin and Condi
Rice of Stanford, and Sig Rogich who was a former regent of the UNLV.
I'll try to cut this down a little, but I've got a lot to
say about these guys, all of them -- generic use of the term, I might
add. (Laughter.) We're here today to honor two great teams out of
the West -- the final two of the Final Fours -- Stanford and the
University of Nevada at Las Vegas, better known as the Cardinal and
the Runnin' Rebels. Well, to put it simply, both teams were awesome.
The Cardinal women's basketball team won a Stanford and
PAC 10 record of 32 games -- in all a total of a 100 individual and
team records broken in this season. So no one was surprised when
Tara Van Derveer was named the Naismith National Coach of the Year.
From the very start, she installed this winning attitude so that you
all began your seasons, in a sense, as champions. Coach, you've
given everyone a reason to be proud down on the farm.
So is Trisha Stevens. I understand that in your career
the number 35 has some significance. That's the number of points you
keep reaching, game after game after game. (Laughter.) And when you
came out on the court against Auburn, you set the tone for the rest
of that game. And so did Katy Steding. Three must be your magic
number, considering the way you bombed the opponents with treys.
Julie Zeilstra, you managed to start all 33 games this season as
forward despite a problem with your Achilles' heels. When the going
got tough, you only got tougher.
Let me also recognize Sonia Henning. After your victory
over the Lady Tigers, Stanford should light 21 candles in your honor.
They say you're one-half of what is considered to be the best
backcourt in women's collegiate basketball. So let me turn, then, to
your partner. You know, one of my favorite bands is the Oak Ridge
Boys -- (laughter) -- so let me salute an Oak Ridge Lady. A young
woman from Tennessee who went to play basketball in Palo Alto only to
achieve her greatest triumph in Knoxville, 20 miles from home. It's
no coincidence that Stanford senior guard Jennifer Azzi won the
Margaret Wade Trophy and the James Naismith Award, the two top honors
in all of women's basketball. We welcome you all; delighted you're
here. (Applause.)
And now, we'll turn to the UNLV. Let me begin with a
salute to the coach, Coach Tarkanian. I'm not saying that "Tark, the
Shark" has any influence on me, but the next time I'm sweating out a
close vote in the Congress, don't be surprised if you see me -- I'll
try anything -- chew on a towel. (Laughter.)
Towel or no towel, it was the opposition that was

shark-bitten. And of course, we should give the Blue Devils their
due. You are, after all, the first team to trip 100 in a final.
Stacey Augmon, Stacy Cvijanovich, and David Butler, you
duked it out with Duke all the way. And, David, you ought to feel at
home today. Anderson Hunt, you kept the Blue Devils behind the
Mason-Dixon Line and made 12 of 16, to become the MVP of the Final
Four. Congratulations.
And then there's Moses. You know the biblical Moses
parted the waters with his staff. Moses Scurry could part the
Potomac with his rebel yell. (Laughter.) And, Larry Johnson, no
wonder you're the First Team consensus all-American. In just half an
hour, you racked up 22 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, and two
treys. But what impresses me the most is that while you're a
probable first choice, you made it clear that you'll go for the BA
before you go for the NBA. (Applause.)
And, Gregg Anthony, I understand you suffered a broken
jaw that had to wired shut during the season. But you played through
your pain. As vice chairman of the -- this is a little political
pitch here -- UNLV Young Republicans -- (laughter) -- I hope you'll
be coming back to Washington some day.
And thank you for telling the world that your first
priority is education and that you may go on to get an MBA or a law
degree. That message has the right kind of impact on kids all across
our great country.
And finally, let me congratulate every player in both
teams -- those of you on the bench as well as on the center court.
And day. all the assistant coaches, managers, and trainers -- this is your
In closing, let me say we're here today to celebrate
another kind of championship, the kind of satisfaction that comes not
from a fast break or a slam dunk, but from the quiet achievement of
scholarship and learning. And this is the commitment of so many,
from Greg and Larry to Trisha, who aspires to be a doctor, to Chris
MacMurdo, with a 3.7 average in human biology, to Stacy Parson, a
social psyche major who is said to be the team encyclopedia. This is
the commitment of the Runnin' Rebels for teaching grade schoolers
basic reading skills and geography. In fact, I understand that
you'll be making at least one classroom visit here in D.C., where
David Butler started his schooling at John F. Cook Elementary.
Just look at your institutions. U.S. News and World
Report identified UNLV as one of the up and coming schools of the
'90s. Little wonder; it's already one of the fastest-growing
universities in America. And of course, we're also familiar with the
academic tradition of Stanford University. So whether you study amid
the Moorish arches of Standford or in the modern complexes of UNLV,
you're learning that when the cheering has faded and the trophy is up
on the shelf, you still have something to give back.
Once again, congratulations. I thank you, and God bless
you all. Keep up that quest for excellence and the achievement
here. you've all demonstrated so well. We're just delighted you all were

WE ARE HERE TODAY TO HONOR A PROUD COLLEGE
TRADITION -- A SPORT I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED, EVEN IF
THOSE WATCHING ME DID NOT.
- 2 -
((IT's TRUE THAT I COULD DRIBBLE A BALL 360 DEGREES
CLEAR AROUND MY BACK, BETWEEN MY LEGS AND OVER MY
HEAD. 11 BUT IT'S EXACTLY THAT KIND OF BEHAVIOR THAT
GOT ME KICKED OFF THE COLLEGE BOWLING TEAM. ))\\\
((OF COURSE, MY GRANDKIDS WERE VERY INTERESTED IN
THE NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT THIS YEAR, BUT SOMETIMES
THEY MISS SOME OF THE NUANCES OF THE GAME. As FAR AS
THEY'RE CONCERNED -- THE "FINAL FOUR" ARE THE TEEN AGE
MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. ))\\\
- 3 -
BUT WE ARE HERE TODAY TO HONOR TWO GREAT TEAMS OUT
OF THE WEST, THE FINAL TWO OF THE FINAL FOURS --
STANFORD AND THE UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA AT LAS VEGAS --
BETTER KNOWN AS THE CARDINAL AND THE RUNNIN' REBELS.
WELL, TO PUT IT SIMPLY, BOTH TEAMS WERE AWESOME.
THE CARDINAL WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM WON A STANFORD AND
PAC-10 RECORD OF 32 GAMES. IN ALL, A TOTAL OF 100
INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM RECORDS BROKEN IN THIS SEASON.
- 4 -
So NO ONE WAS SURPRISED WHEN TARA VANDERVEER WAS
NAMED THE NAISMITH NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR. FROM
THE VERY START, SHE INSTILLED A WINNING ATTITUDE, so
THAT YOU BEGAN YOUR SEASON AS CHAMPIONS. COACH, YOU'VE
GIVEN EVERYONE REASON TO BE PROUD DOWN ON THE FARM. III
AND so HAS TRISHA STEVENS -- I UNDERSTAND THAT IN
YOUR CAREER THE NUMBER 35 HAS SOME SIGNIFICANCE --
THAT'S THE NUMBER OF POINTS YOU KEEP REACHING IN GAME
AFTER GAME. 11
- 5 -
AND WHEN YOU CAME OUT ON THE COURT AGAINST AUBURN, YOU
SET THE TONE FOR THE REST OF THAT GAME.
AND so DID KATY STEDING (STED-ING)-- -- THREE MUST BE
YOUR MAGIC NUMBER, CONSIDERING THE WAY YOU BOMBED
OPPONENTS WITH TREYS. JULIE ZEILSTRA ((ZEAL-STRA)),
YOU MANAGED TO START ALL 33 GAMES THIS SEASON AT
FORWARD, DESPITE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR ACHILLES HEELS.
WHEN THE GOING GOT TOUGH, YOU ONLY GOT TOUGHER.
- 6 -
AND LET ME ALSO RECOGNIZE SONJA HENNING -- AFTER
YOUR VICTORY OVER THE LADY TIGERS, STANFORD SHOULD
LIGHT 21 CANDLES IN YOUR HONOR. THEY SAY YOU'RE
ONE-HALF OF WHAT IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE BEST BACKCOURT
IN WOMEN'S COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL. So LET ME TURN TO
YOUR PARTNER. 11
You KNOW, ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS IS THE OAK RIDGE
Boys.
- 7 -
WELL, LET ME SALUTE AN OAK RIDGE LADY -- A YOUNG WOMAN
FROM TENNESSEE WHO WENT TO PLAY BASKETBALL IN PALO
ALTO, ONLY TO ACHIEVE HER GREATEST TRIUMPH IN
KNOXVILLE, 20 MILES FROM HOME. It's NO COINCIDENCE
THAT STANFORD SENIOR GUARD JENNIFER Azzi (AY-zee) WON
THE MARGARET WADE TROPHY AND THE JAMES NAISMITH
AWARD -- THE TWO TOP HONORS IN ALL OF WOMEN'S
BASKETBALL. 111
- 8 -
Now IT UNLV's TURN -- ((TALK ABOUT CLIFF HANGERS.
I KNOW THAT FOR YOU THE NCAA FINAL WAS A LIFE-AND-DEATH
STRUGGLE, BEFORE YOU FINALLY NIPPED DUKE BY THIRTY
POINTS. 11 THE GREATEST SUSPENSE IN THE SECOND HALF WAS
WAITING TO SEE HOW BRENT MUSBURGER WOULD SAY GOODBYE TO
CBS.))\\\
- 9 -
(WELL, LET ME BEGIN WITH A SALUTE TO COACH
TARKANIAN. Now, I'M NOT SAYING THAT TARK THE SHARK HAS
ANY INFLUENCE ON ME, BUT THE NEXT TIME I'M SWEATING OUT
A CLOSE VOTE IN CONGRESS, DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOU SEE
ME CHEWING ON A TOWEL.) )\\\ BUT TOWEL OR NO TOWEL,
IT'S WAS THE OPPOSITION THAT WAS SHARK-BITTEN.
OF COURSE, WE SHOULD GIVE THE BLUE DEVILS THEIR
DUE. BUT YOU ARE, AFTER ALL, THE FIRST TEAM TO TRIP A
HUNDRED IN A FINAL.
- 10 -
STACEY AUGMON, STACEY CVIJANOVICH (SEA-ON-A-VICH)
AND DAVID BUTLER -- You DUKED IT OUT WITH DUKE ALL THE
WAY. AND DAVID, YOU OUGHT TO FEEL AT HOME TODAY.
ANDERSON HUNT -- You KEPT THE BLUE DEVILS BEHIND
THE MASON-DIXON LINE; AND MADE 12 OF 16 TO BECOME THE
MVP OF THE FINAL FOUR. CONGRATULATIONS.
((AND THEN THERE IS MOSES. You KNOW, THE BIBLICAL
MOSES PARTED THE WATERS WITH HIS STAFF. MOSES SCURRY
COULD PART THE PoToMac WITH HIS REBEL YELL.))\\\
- 11 -
LARRY JOHNSON -- No WONDER YOU'RE THE FIRST TEAM
CONSENSUS ALL-AMERICAN. IN JUST HALF AN HOUR, YOU
RACKED UP 22 POINTS, 11 REBOUNDS, FOUR STEALS AND TWO
TREYS. BUT WHAT IMPRESSES ME MOST IS THAT WHILE YOU'RE
A PROBABLE FIRST CHOICE -- YOU'VE MADE IT CLEAR THAT
YOU'LL GO FOR THE BA BEFORE YOU GO FOR THE NBA.\\\\\
GREG ANTHONY, I UNDERSTAND YOU SUFFERED A BROKEN
JAW THAT HAD TO BE WIRED SHUT DURING THIS SEASON, BUT
THAT YOU PLAYED THROUGH YOUR PAIN. 11
- 12 -
As VICE-CHAIRMAN OF THE UNLV YOUNG REPUBLICANS, I HOPE
YOU'LL BE COMING BACK TO WASHINGTON SOMEDAY. AND THANK
YOU FOR TELLING THE WORLD THAT YOUR FIRST PRIORITY IS
EDUCATION -- AND THAT YOU MAY GO ON To GET AN MBA OR A
LAW DEGREE. THAT MESSAGE HAS THE RIGHT KIND OF IMPACT
ON KIDS EVERYWHERE.
- 13 -
AND FINALLY, LET ME CONGRATULATE EVERY PLAYER IN
BOTH TEAMS, THOSE OF YOU ON THE BENCH AS WELL AS THE
CENTER COURT, AND ALL THE ASSISTANT COACHES, MANAGERS
AND TRAINERS -- THIS IS YOUR DAY.
IN CLOSING, LET ME SAY WE'RE HERE TODAY TO
CELEBRATE ANOTHER KIND OF CHAMPIONSHIP -- THE KIND OF
SATISFACTION THAT COMES NOT FROM A FAST BREAK OR A SLAM
DUNK -- BUT FROM THE QUIET ACHIEVEMENT OF SCHOLARSHIP
AND LEARNING.
- 14 -
THIS IS THE COMMITMENT OF so MANY, FROM GREG AND
LARRY TO TRISHA, WHO ASPIRES TO BE A DOCTOR -- TO CHRIS
MACMURDO WITH A 3.7 AVERAGE IN HUMAN BIOLOGY -- TO
STACY PARSON, A SOCIAL PSYCH MAJOR WHO IS SAID TO BE
THE TEAM ENCYCLOPEDIA. THIS IS THE COMMITMENT OF THE
RUNNIN' REBELS FOR TEACHING GRADE-SCHOOLERS BASIC
READING SKILLS AND GEOGRAPHY.
- 15 -
IN FACT, I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU'LL BE MAKING AT LEAST
ONE CLASSROOM VISIT HERE IN D.C., WHERE DAVID BUTLER
STARTED HIS SCHOOLING AT JOHN F. CooK ELEMENTARY.
AND JUST LOOK AT YOUR INSTITUTIONS. US NEWS AND
WORLD REPORT IDENTIFIED UNLV AS ONE OF THE "UP AND
COMING SCHOOLS OF THE '90s." LITTLE WONDER IT IS
ALREADY ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING UNIVERSITIES IN
AMERICA. AND, OF COURSE, WE ARE ALSO FAMILIAR WITH THE
ACADEMIC TRADITION OF STANFORD UNIVERSITY.
- 16 -
So WHETHER YOU STUDY AMID THE MOORISH ARCHES OF
STANFORD'S QUADS, OR IN THE MODERN COMPLEXES OF UNLV,
YOU ARE LEARNING THAT WHEN THE CHEERING HAS FADED AND
THE TROPHY IS ON THE SHELF, YOU'LL STILL HAVE SOMETHING
TO GIVE BACK.
ONCE AGAIN, CONGRATULATIONS. I THANK YOU, AND MAY
GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 1989-90 STANFORD CARDINAL WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SEASON
The Stanford Women's Basketball Team won the 1989-90 NCAA
Championship, defeating Auburn, 88-81, in Knoxville, Tennessee,
April 1, 1990. In the national semifinal game, Stanford defeated
Virginia, 75-66, two nights earlier.
The Cardinal Women's Basketball Team had an exceptional season,
winning a Stanford and Pac-10 record 32 games, while losing
only one.
The Stanford Women's Basketball Team established over 40
Pacific-10 Conference, over 50 Stanford, and over 10 NCAA
Tournament team and individual records during the season--
a total of over 100 records overall.
Stanford head women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer was named
the Naismith National Coach of the Year, the WABC District 8
Coach of the Year for the third straight season, and the Pac-10
Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Stanford senior guard Jennifer Azzi was named winner of the
Margaret Wade Trophy and winner of the James Naismith Award,
the top two most prestigious honors in all of women's basketball.

Team at the NCAA Final Four, named the CBS/Chevrolet Player of

Pac-10 Conference in three-point field goal percentage at .464,
and never missed a game (playing in all 124) of her four year
Stanford career.
Stanford junior guard Sonja Henning was named First Team
All-Pac-10 for the second straight season, led the Pac-10 with
a conference single-season assist record of 221, and led Stanford

points per game average, led the Pac-10 Conference in field
goal percentage at 54.9 percent, and was named to the NCAA
Regional All-Tournament Team for the second straight season.
Stanford sophomore forward Julie Zeilstra was named a GTE/COSIDA
Third Team Academic All-America, a Pac-10 First Team

record of 57 blocks, and was second in the Pac-10 Conference in
field goal percentage at .547.
Stanford senior guard Stacy Parson played in all 33 games this
season, served as an excellent reserve, provided extra spark
and scoring punch off the bench, and is Stanford's women's
basketball candidate for an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Stanford sophomore forward/guard Martha Richards, freshman
forward Chris MacMurdo, freshman guard Molly Goodenbour, and
freshman quard Angela Taylor were all included in what was
considered the finest bench in the Pac-10 Conference and perhaps
the best in the nation.
Assistant Coaches Amy Tucker, Julic Plank, and Renee Brown, along
with Managers Leslie Crandell, Marla Tuchinsky, and Chris Jones,
as well as Trainers Patti Millson and Ann Adkins all combined
to form the best support group in the nation.

( (President Bob Maxim, my fellow Houstonian. President
Donald Kennedy. Lois Tarkanian. [[Other acknowledgements to
come.]])) Welcome to the White House.
We are here today to honor a proud college tradition -- a
sport I love, though it is one I did not play.
((It's true that I could dribble a ball 360 degrees clear
around my back, between my legs and over my head. But it's
exactly that kind of behavior that got me kicked off the college
bowling team. ) )
( (Of course, my grandkids were very interested in the NCAA
Basketball Tournament this year, but sometimes they miss some of
the nuances of the game. As far as they're concerned -- the
"Final Four" are the Teen-age Mutant Ninja Turtles. ))\\\
But we are here today to honor two great teams out of the
West, the final two of the Final Fours -- Stanford and the
University of Nevada at Las Vegas -- better known as The Cardinal
?. and The Running Rebels.
Well, to put it simply, both teams were awesome. The
Cardinal Women's Basketball team won a Stanford and PAC-10 record
of 32 games. In all, a total of 100 individual and team records
broken in this season.
2
So no one was surprised when Tara VanDerveer was named the
Naismith National Coach of the Year. From the very start, she
instilled a winning attitude, so that you began your season as
champions. Coach, you've given everyone reason to be proud down
on the Farm.
Trisha Stevens -- I understand that in your career the
number 35 has some significance. And when you came out on the
court against Auburn, you set the tone for the rest of the game.
Katy Steding -- three must be your magic number, considering
tighten
the way you bombed opponents with treys.
Julie Zeilstra ( (ZEAL-Stra)) -- I understand that you
managed to start all 33 games this season at forward, despite a
problem with your achilles heels. When the going got tough, you
only got tougher.
Sonja Henning -- after your victory over the Lady Tigers,
Stanford should light 21 candles in your honor. They say you're
one-half of what is considered to be the best backcourt in
women's collegiate basketball. So let me turn to your partner.
You know, one of my favorite bands is the Oak Ridge Boys.
Well, let me salute an Oak Ridge lady -- a young woman from
Tennessee who went to play basketball in Palo Alto, only to
achieve her greatest triumph in Knoxville, 20 miles from home.
It's no coincidence that Stanford senior guard Jennifer Azzi won
the Margaret Wade Trophy and the James Naismith Award -- the two
top honors in all of women's basketball.
3
Now it UNLV's turn -- (And I just hope you were all able to
fit through the metal detectors
I know that for you the NCAA
Final was a life-and-death struggle, before you finally nipped
Duke by thirty points. Talk about a cliff-hanger. The
second half
greatest suspense in the last quarter was waiting to see how
Brent Musburger would say goodbye to CBS. ) )
( (Well, let me begin with a salute to Coach Tarkanian. Now,
I'm not saying that Tark the Shark has any influence on me, but
the next time I'm sweating out a close vote in Congress, don't be
surprised if you see me chewing on a towel. ) ) But towel or no
towel, it's was the opposition that was shark-bitten.
Of course, we should give the Blue Devils their due. But
you are, after all, the first team to trip a hundred in a Final.
And if there were some out there who were not cheering for you,
just remember what Wilt Chamberlain once said: Nobody roots for
Goliath.
and David Butler
David you at
and ought to feel
home today.
Stacey Augmon You duked it out with Duke all the way,
Anderson Hunt -- You kept the Blue Devils behind the Mason-
Dixon line; and made 12 of 16 to become the MVP of the Final
Four. Congratulations.
( (And then there is Moses. You know, the Biblical Moses
parted the waters with his staff. Moses Scurry could part the
Potomac with his Rebel yell. ) )
Larry Johnson -- No wonder you're the first team consensus
all-American. In just half an hour, you racked up 22 points, 11
rebounds, four steals and two treys. But what impresses me most
4
is that while you're a probable first choice -- you've made it
clear that you'll go for the BA before you go for the NBA.
Greg Anthony, I understand you suffered a broken jaw that
had to be wired shut during this season, but that you played
UNLV
through your pain. As Vice-Chairman of the Young Republicans,
I hope you'll be coming back to Washington someday.
And finally, let me congratulate every player in both teams,
those of you on the bench as well as the center court, and all
the assistant coaches, managers and trainers -- this is your day.
In closing, let me say we're here today to celebrate another
kind of championship -- the kind of satisfaction that comes not
from a fast break or a slam dunk -- but from the quiet
achievement of scholarship and learning.
This is the commitment of so many, from Greg and Larry to
Trisha, who aspires to be a doctor -- to Chris MacMurdo with a
social
3.7 average in human biology -- to Stacy Parson, a, psych major
who is said to be the team encyclopedia. ment A
And just look at your institutions. US News and World
Report identified UNLV as one of the "up and coming schools of
the '90s." Little wonder it is already one of the fastest
growing universities in America. And, of course, we are also
familiar with the academic tradition of Stanford University. So
whether you study amid the moorish arches of Stanford's quads, or
in the modern complexes of UNLV, you are learning that when the
cheering has faded and the trophy is on the shelf, you'll still
have something to give back. Once again, congratulations.
and thank you for telling the world that your first priouty
is education and perhaps ge Herg your MBA or goong to law
of
school. Thats kind of message has an impact on kids
everywhere.
5
I thank you, and may God bless you all and the United States
of America.

( (Of course, my grandkids were very interested in the NCAA
Basketball Tournament this year, but sometimes they miss some of
the nuances of the game. As far as they're concerned -- the
"Final Four" are the Teen-age Mutant Ninja Turtles. ))\\\
But we are here today to honor two great teams out of the
West, the final two of the Final Fours -- Stanford and the
University of Nevada at Las Vegas -- better known as The Cardinal
and The Running Rebels.
Katy Steding -- three must be your magic number, considering
the way you bombed opponents with treys.
Julie Zeilstra ((ZEAL-Stra)) -- I understand that you
managed to start all 33 games this season at forward, despite a
problem with your achilles heels.
- the Margaret Wade Trophy and the James Naismith Award -- the two
top honors in all of women's basketball.
3
Now it UNLV's turn -- ( (And I just hope you were all able to
fit through the metal detectors. I know that for you the NCAA
Final was a life-and-death struggle, before you finally nipped
Duke by thirty points. Talk about a cliff-hanger. The
greatest suspense in the last quarter was waiting to see how
Brent Musburger would say goodbye to CBS.))\\\
( (Well, let me begin with a salute to Coach Tarkanian. Now,

the next time I'm sweating out a close vote in Congress, don't be
surprised if you see me chewing on a towel. ))\\\ But towel or no
towel, it's was the opposition that was shark-bitten.
Of course, we should give the Blue Devils their due. But
you are, after all, the first team to trip a hundred in a Final.
And if there were some out there who were not cheering for you,
just remember what Wilt Chamberlain once said: "Nobody roots for
Goliath.
Stacey Augmon -- You duked it out with Duke all the way.
Greg Anthony, I understand you suffered a broken jaw that
had to be wired shut during this season, but that you played
through your pain.
This is the commitment of so many, from Greg and Larry to
Trisha, who aspires to be a doctor -- to Chris MacMurdo with a
3.7 average in human biology -- to Stacy Parson, a psych major
who is said to be the team encyclopedia.
5
I thank you, and may God bless you all and the United States
of America.

Greg Anthony, I understand you suffered a broken jaw that
had to be wired shut during this season, but that you played
through your pain.
This is the commitment of so many, from Greg and Larry to
Trisha, who aspires to be a doctor -- to Chris MacMurdo with a
3.7 average in human biology -- to Stacy Parson, a psych major
who is said to be the team encyclopedia.
5
I thank you, and may God bless you all and the United States
of America.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS: ROSE GARDEN
Tuesday, April 17, 1990, 2:30 p.m.
11 But it's
exactly that kind of behavior that got me kicked off the college
bowling team. ))\\\
Katy Steding -- three must be your magic number, considering
the way you bombed opponents with treys.
3
Now it UNLV's turn -- ( (And I just hope you were all able to
fit through the metal detectors. I know that for you the NCAA
Final was a life-and-death struggle, before you finally nipped
Duke by thirty points. Talk about a cliff-hanger. The
greatest suspense in the last quarter was waiting to see how
Brent Musburger would say goodbye to CBS. ) )
((Well, let me begin with a salute to Coach Tarkanian. Now,
I'm not saying that Tark the Shark has any influence on me, but
the next time I'm sweating out a close vote in Congress, don't be
surprised if you see me chewing on a towel. ) ) But towel or no
towel, it's was the opposition that was shark-bitten.
Of course, we should give the Blue Devils their due. But
you are, after all, the first team to trip a hundred in a Final.
And if there were some out there who were not cheering for you,
just remember what Wilt Chamberlain once said: "Nobody roots for
Goliath.
Stacey Augmon -- You duked it out with Duke all the way.
Anderson Hunt -- You kept the Blue Devils behind the Mason-
