PRAGUE
PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: EMBASSY GREETING
PRAGUE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1990
Madame Ambassador, friends. I am delighted to be the
first American President to visit Czechoslovakia, and to have the
chance to meet you.
It was good several moments ago to have a meeting with
"Gorby." Where I extended best wishes from an American admirer -
- the most charismatic speaker in the Bush family. Millie sends
her love.
o
Let me say I know what a burden a Presidential visit
can be. Barbara and I want to thank you -- especially Shirley
Temple Black -- for the work and dedication that have gone into
our visit.
o
From my experience in China, I know there is no more
dedicated and loyal group of people than the men and women --
American and foreign -- who staff our Embassies. Ambassador
Black's dedication proves that point. So does the duty and
sacrifice of each of you.
o
Think of the events you've shared -- and helped shape -
- during what I call the Revolution of '89. And of the renewal
of the Czech and Slovak peoples -- whom you have come to know so
well. And think of the work the Czechoslovakia's revolutionary
year has meant!
2
Together, you've helped bring Czechoslovakia closer to
the United States. And strengthen its ties to peace and human
rights. You've aided economic liberalization and political
democratization. And affirmed the freedoms with which God has
blessed America.
O
For your support of these great ideals, I thank you.
You are helping link the people of Czechoslovakia with the
peoples of the world. Just as you are helping build stronger
Czechoslovakia-American ties through your work, and through your
dreams.
In closing, let me say again how much we appreciate
your dedication. Thank you, and God bless the United States of
America.
