SUMMARY Attached for your consideration and review are draft scripts for your audio taping session on March 18th. You are scheduled to tape two segments. II. DISCUSSION At 2 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 1991, you are scheduled to tape two audio messages for the following: 1) a generic "Homecoming" audio message to the troops arriving back in the U.S.; and, 2) a radio message for the Department of Agriculture and "National Agriculture Day." Please note that the Department of Agriculture message has a 60-second time limit. McGroarty/Grossman March 15, 1991 2:00 pm [HOME] PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: GENERIC AUDIO "HOMECOMING" MESSAGE THE WHITE HOUSE MARCH 18, 1991 2:00 PM In the weeks and months between now and the 4th of July, thousands of cities and town across America are going to be the scene of celebration: Each one different -- and yet every one the same. Today, it's your turn. // All the waiting, all the wishing is over. This is the day the heroes come home. // I wish it were possible for me to be there with you -- to share with you this special day. I ask you to accept this message of thanks. Today is a day of reunion -- a day when the men and women who went so far away from home come back, take their seat at the table. It is a day of joy -- and celebration. / But sometime today --- sometime between the parades and the picnics -- between all the speeches and the ceremonies -- I ask you to stop for a moment. Think about the men and women of DESERT STORM. How they served this nation and the cause of peace. And think about how each one of us can harness that same spirit of public service in all we do. // I know that for all of you, this is a day you will never forget. My own homecoming so many years ago is still vivid in my mind. / But we haven't always welcomed our veterans back with 2 open arms -- so today, as you honor the men and women of DESERT STORM, remember every veteran who's sacrificed and served this Nation. Let today be a homecoming for them, too. // To all the families who've counted the hours and days -- to all the friends and neighbors who sent the packages and said the prayers, let me say: you sustained us. 11 And to all the veterans of DESERT STORM, let me simply say: welcome home. // My warmest wishes to you all -- and may God bless this great nation, the United States of America. # # # Luthringer/Grossman Draft three March 18, 1991 Title: AGDAY PROPOSED RADIO MESSAGE FOR USDA's NATIONAL AGRICULTURE DAY (60 seconds) We Americans are blessed with abundance. And on the first day of Spring we celebrate National Agriculture Day -- honoring the farmers who turn hard soil into splendid harvests. America's farmers have astounded the world with their productivity. Today, the average American farm family produces enough food to feed 94 people in this country and 34 people abroad. This is not an easy task. Today's farmer must be an expert in international markets, computers, machinery, biology and chemistry. But technology hasn't changed everything. Farmers still must rise before the sun to tend their crops and livestock. They still must protect the soil, lakes and rivers upon which all life depends. And they still must thrive in the most competitive industry on earth. So please join me on this National Agriculture Day and thank our farmers for the miracles they work each and every day. Thank you, and may God bless this great country. # # # THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON 91 MAR 18 Ag: 52 March 15, 1991 MEMORANDUM FOR TONY SNOW FROM: ROGER B.
