PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: THE GREAT AMERICAN WORKOUT
THE SOUTH LAWN
MAY 1, 1991
7:00 AM
[[Sorry I'm late My Secretary told me I had a 7 O'clock
]
appointment with the Terminator, so I went down to the Oval
Office looking for John Sununu. 7X11
[Governor Sununu wasn't there but I did find Dana Carvey
sitting at my desk. / Dana had to cut short his call to
?
Gorbachev to get out here with me. //]]
We're out here bright and early today for a very special
reason -- [[// no one wanted to tell Arnold 7 a.m. was too
early. ]]
We're out here to kick off National Physical Fitness and
Sports Month with the Great American Workout. And here to lead
us is the Chairman of the President's Council on Fitness. From
Kindergarten Cop to the nation's gym teacher -- my good friend
and America fitness czar: Arnold Schwarzenegger. //
Let me also welcome the many other celebrities and special
guests with us today -- especially Northern Michigan University's
hockey team: NCAA champs. I understand that 5 members of the
team are Academic All-Americans, proving that you can excel in
the classroom as well as on the ice. //
2
We're all here today to send America a message: No matter
how old you are, or what kind of shape you're in, exercise helps
every one of us live longer, healthier lives. For many of us,
fitness is already a part of our daily routine. But too many
people still look at exercise as optional -- and one in four
adults don't exercise at all. // For the sake of our nation's
health, that's got to change. //
Exercise is important for every American -- but the focus
this year is on youth fitness. //
If we want our children to grow up strong and healthy, we've
got work to do. Right now, only one state requires daily phys.
ed. from kindergarten through 12th Grade -- and across the
country, only one in three students of all ages take gym every
day. // If we care about our kids' future -- we'll make room
for fitness. //
We start by teaching our kids that Phys. Ed. is just like
any other class -- to get ahead, you've got to do homework. And
the good news is that fitness is fun. So on the weekends, after
school: Stay away from the junk food. Get up off the couch --
unplug that video game, turn off that TV. Go out and get some
exercise. //
That's what we're about to do this morning. But before we
begin, let me recognize one girl who symbolizes the 10 million
American children who are on the right track to good health: the
10 millionth recipient of the President's Physical Fitness Award
3
-- Andrea Stafford. [[You won't believe this one, but it's the
truth]] -- Andrea's from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. //
It's my pleasure to officially declare the month of May
National Fitness and Sports Month. And now, without further
delay, the Czar and I will attack these workout stations.

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: THE GREAT AMERICAN WORKOUT
THE SOUTH LAWN
MAY 1, 1991
7:00 AM
[Sorry I'm late. My Secretary told me I had a 7 O'clock
appointment with the Terminator, so I went down to the Oval
Office looking for John Sununu. //]]
[Governor Sununu wasn't there -- but I did find Dana Carvey
sitting at my desk. / Dana had to cut short his call to
Gorbachev to get out here with me.
From
Kindergarden Cop to the nation's gym teacher -- my good friend
and America's fitness czar: Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Right now, only one state requires daily phys.
ed. from kindergarden through 12th Grade -- and across the
country, only one in three students of all ages take gym every
day. // If we care about our kids' future we'll make room
for fitness.

THE GREAT AMERICAN WORKOUT \ THE SOUTH LAWN
MAY 1, 1991 \ 7:00 AM
WE'RE OUT HERE BRIGHT AND EARLY TODAY FOR A VERY
SPECIAL REASON -- [[// NO ONE WANTED TO TELL ARNOLD 7
A.M. WAS TOO EARLY.]
WE'RE OUT HERE TO KICK OFF NATIONAL PHYSICAL
FITNESS AND SPORTS MONTH WITH THE GREAT AMERICAN
WORKOUT. AND HERE TO LEAD US IS THE CHAIRMAN OF THE
PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL ON FITNESS. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER.
- 2 -
AWHILE BACK, ARNOLD WAS WITH US UP AT CAMP DAVID.
WE WERE PLAYING WALLY BALL -- A GREAT GAME -- VOLLEY
BALL IN A RACQUETBALL COURT.
OUR GRANDDAUGHTER'S 6 YEAR OLD FRIEND, ABIGAIL,
LOOKED THOUGH THE LITTLE WINDOW IN THE RACQUETBALL
COURT DOOR -- TURNED AND RAN INTO THE GYM WHERE THE
MARINES WERE WORKING OUT AND SAID, "GUESS WHO'S IN THE
COURT IN THERE -- KINDERGARTEN Cop! HE'S WEARING
FLOWERED SHORTS. IT'S WEIRD!"
- 3 -
ARNOLD IS DOING A GREAT JOB. HE'S ALREADY VISITED
24 STATES, AND HIS STEPS ARE LEADING THE WAY FOR
FITNESS.
LET ME ALSO WELCOME THE MANY OTHER CELEBRITIES AND
SPECIAL GUESTS WITH US TODAY -- ESPECIALLY NORTHERN
MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY'S HOCKEY TEAM: NCAA CHAMPS. I
UNDERSTAND THAT 8 MEMBERS OF THE TEAM WERE NAMED TO
THEIR LEAGUE'S ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM, PROVING THAT YOU CAN
EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM AS WELL AS ON THE ICE. //
- 4 -
THESE YOUNG MEN SERVE AS A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE TO US
ALL. As YOU KNOW, OUR ADMINISTRATION HAS PROPOSED A
BOLD NEW EDUCATION STRATEGY, WHICH WE CALL AMERICA
2000. IT CHALLENGES OUR YOUNG PEOPLE TO EXCEL IN
ENGLISH, HISTORY, MATH, SCIENCE AND GEOGRAPHY. BUT IT
ALSO ENCOURAGES AMERICANS TO DEVELOP HABITS THAT LEAD
TO FULLER, RICHER LIVES -- TO MAKE LEARNING A PROCESS
THAT NEVER ENDS.
- 5 -
WE'RE HERE THIS MORNING BECAUSE WE WANT TO
EMPHASIZE ANOTHER IMPORTANT HABIT -- AND I'M NOT JUST
TALKING ABOUT GETTING UP EARLY. WE WANT TO EMPHASIZE
THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY BODIES: BODIES FREE FROM
DRUGS -- BODIES CHARGED WITH THE VIGOR THAT EXERCISE
BRINGS.
No MATTER HOW OLD YOU ARE, OR WHAT KIND OF SHAPE
YOU'RE IN, EXERCISE HELPS EVERY ONE OF US LIVE LONGER,
HEALTHIER, MORE ENJOYABLE LIVES.
- 6 -
FOR MANY OF US, FITNESS IS ALREADY A PART OF OUR DAILY
ROUTINE. BUT TOO MANY PEOPLE STILL LOOK AT EXERCISE AS
OPTIONAL -- AND ONE IN FOUR ADULTS DON'T EXERCISE AT
ALL. // FOR THE SAKE OF OUR NATION'S HEALTH, THAT'S
GOT TO CHANGE. //
EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT FOR EVERY AMERICAN -- BUT THE
FOCUS THIS YEAR IS ON YOUTH FITNESS. //
IF WE WANT OUR CHILDREN To GROW UP STRONG AND
HEALTHY, WE'VE GOT WORK To DO.
- 7 -
RIGHT NOW, ONLY ONE STATE REQUIRES DAILY PHYS. ED. FROM
KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 12TH GRADE -- AND ACROSS THE
COUNTRY, ONLY ONE IN THREE STUDENTS OF ALL AGES TAKE
GYM EVERY DAY. // IF WE CARE ABOUT OUR KIDS' FUTURE
-- WE'LL MAKE ROOM FOR FITNESS. // WE START BY
TEACHING OUR KIDS THAT PHYS. ED. IS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER
CLASS -- TO GET AHEAD, YOU'VE GOT TO DO HOMEWORK. AND
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT FITNESS IS FUN. So ON THE
WEEKENDS, AFTER SCHOOL: STAY AWAY FROM THE JUNK FOOD.
- 8 -
GET UP OFF THE COUCH -- UNPLUG THAT VIDEO GAME, TURN
OFF THAT TV. Go OUT AND GET SOME EXERCISE. // THAT'S
WHAT WE'RE ABOUT TO DO THIS MORNING. BUT BEFORE WE
BEGIN, LET ME RECOGNIZE ONE GIRL WHO SYMBOLIZES THE 10
MILLION AMERICAN CHILDREN WHO ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK TO
GOOD HEALTH: THE 10 MILLIONTH RECIPIENT OF THE
PRESIDENT'S PHYSICAL FITNESS AWARD -- ANDREA STAFFORD.
[[You WON'T BELIEVE THIS ONE, BUT IT'S THE TRUTH]] --
ANDREA'S FROM MUSCLE SHOALS, ALABAMA. //
- 9 -
It's MY PLEASURE TO OFFICIALLY DECLARE THE MONTH OF
MAY NATIONAL FITNESS AND SPORTS MONTH. AND NOW,
WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY, THE CZAR AND I WILL ATTACK THESE
WORKOUT STATIONS.
