Ms. Black Bear counsels battered women in the Rosebud Sioux Indian reservation. A past victim herself, Ms. Black Bear applies her knowledge in the service of other women who have suffered the indignity of domestic abuse. In 1979, seeing a need for support services for battered women, Ms. Black Bear established the White Buffalo Calf Women's Society. Under her leadership, the Society has done much to alleviate the pain of domestic violence, providing a shelter for women who have suffered physical and mental anguish. Although physically slowed by lupus in recent years, Ms. Black Bear continues to be a voice for the dignity of women at the reservation, and I salute her efforts.
