BOWLING LEAGUE TO HELP THE DISABLED DEVELOP SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE
HEMET, CALIFORNIA
I am pleased to honor the Hemet Honey Bears Bowling League of
Hemet, California as the 570th Daily Point of Light for the Nation.
Using bowling as physical and social therapy, the Honey Bears' team
of volunteers help individuals with disabilities reach their
highest potential and gain a positive sense of self-worth.
Launched in 1974, the league provides an enjoyable outlet of
competition for the physically impaired.
All across our great country, individuals like the volunteers

MS. TILLIE BLACK BEAR
WORKS WITH ABUSED NATIVE AMERICAN WOMEN
ST. FRANCIS, SOUTH DAKOTA
I am pleased to honor Ms. Tillie Black Bear of St. Francis,
South Dakota, as the 571st Daily Point of Light for the Nation.
Ms. Black Bear counsels battered women in the Rosebud Sioux Indian
reservation. A past victim herself, Ms. Black Bear applies her
knowledge in the service of other women who have suffered the
indignity of domestic abuse. In 1979, seeing a need for support
services for battered women, Ms. Black Bear established the White
Buffalo Calf Women's Society. Under her leadership, the Society
has done much to alleviate the pain of domestic violence, providing
a shelter for women who have suffered physical and mental anguish.
Although physically slowed by lupus in recent years, Ms. Black Bear
continues to be a voice for the dignity of women at the
reservation, and I salute her efforts.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE CHILDREN'S BEREAVEMENT ART GROUP
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
I am pleased to. honor the volunteers of the Children's
Bereavement Art Group of Sacramento, California, as the 573rd Daily
Point of Light for the Nation. This dedicated group encourages
children who have suffered the loss of someone close to express
their grief through art. Over 20 volunteers assist three
registered art therapists in easing the way for these kids, who are
often unable to verbalize their anguish, to vent their heartache
through a variety of art works. Sponsored by the Sutter Community
Hospitals Foundation, the Children's Bereavement Art Group has
served 805 children between the ages of four and sixteen since
1985. These compassionate volunteers contribute a valuable service
in alleviating the pain suffered by these children, and I salute
their efforts.

MS. ADA COOPER
FOUNDER OF THE BLITCH STREET PROJECT
STATESBORO, GEORGIA
I am pleased to honor Ms. Ada Cooper of Statesboro, Georgia,
as the 574th Daily Point of Light for the Nation. Just over a year
ago, Ms. Cooper founded the Blitch Street Project to provide
Statesboro youth with an alternative to the violence that is too
often visited on their community. Instilling these children with
a greater sense of self-worth and responsibility, Ms. Cooper has
improved their lives by providing hope. Believing in what she
calls the "total child" method, Ms. Cooper and her staff address
not only the children's educational and recreational needs but also
the core values needed to succeed in life. Ms. Cooper's Blitch
Street Project is working wonders in showing the way toward a
better life for Statesboro's young -- and I heartily salute her
efforts.

needed to develop personal friendships with her special students
and to learn sign language. A volunteer since the fourth grade and
