DRAFT PRESS STATEMENT
October 4, 1991
Today's unemployment figures are good news. The drop in
unemployment is one more sign that our economy is strengthening.
Data released just this week showed new car sales were up,
housing sales were up, and the purchasing managers' index was
bullish on the manufacturing sector. And people should take note
of the fact that interest rates are dropping to levels we haven't
seen since 1977.
Not only
Are parts of the country still having it tough? Sure. Are
there still people out there hurting?. Yes. Are we prepared to
help? Absolutely But we're trying to do it the right way; the
compassionate way for the guy out of work the guy footing
the bill -- the taxpayer.
but also
I'll sign a responsible bill in a heartbeat if the Congress
would just send me one. I'm just a little bit tired of some in
the Congress using one issue after another to back out of the
budget agreement. I'm determined to keep the lid on spending,
and I'm going to hold Congress to honoring its commitments.
Maybe they think they can spend money we don't have -- but I
don't. Look, let's be straight with the American people -- we
can assist people whose benefits have run out, and we can do it
immediately. This isn't about making partisan points. Give me a
sensible bill that's paid for, and I'll sign it.
General Comment- perhaps we should mention
the Dole-Michel bill as
the sensible alterNative that We
went In sian.
