October 8, 1991
MEMORANDUM FOR TONY SNOW/CURT SMITH
FROM:
John S. Gardner Jds
SUBJECT:
Columbus Day Remarks
I marked a few comments on the draft; most notably, the joke
should include "or Spanish" because many of the attendees -- including
Colon himself -- are either Spanish nationals or Hispanic generally.
More broadly, would it be possible to add a paragraph putting
this observance of Columbus Day in context -- e.g., a hemisphere moving
towards democracy and free enterprise; some mention of Enterprise for
the Americas; and the hope that the celebration of the Quincentenary
will lead to greater appreciation of our common heritage in this
hemisphere and closer ties with its peoples.
This is important for two reasons: first, we need to put the
Quincentenary in the context of Bush Administration goals for their own
sake; second, more baldly, part of the reason for having this event at
all is that the Quincentenary Commission is bringing in potential
sponsors. For them to hear that the Quincentenary does have some
context in which they can see a corporate advantage for themselves from
sponsoring it will help Frank Donatelli a great deal. (That's also why
I expanded the point in the second paragraph.)
Thanks.

discovered has helped chart the course of exploration and

STATE ROOM
Chairman Frank Donatelli and his lovely wife, Becki.
Members of the Commission. Mr. Magnani [ ], here from Genoa.
Mr. Kingham, Mrs. Yochmin [ ], Peter Maax, and Christopher
Colon -- a descendant by direct line of Christopher Columbus. //
Members of Congress, Ambassadors from , , and - Ladies and

( (Let me say first that I feel a certain kinship with
today's honored guest. Among the foodstuffs introduced to Europe
after the discovery of the New World were potatoes, peppers,
corn, and tomatoes. / Apparently, Columbus had sense enough not
to take back any broccoli. )) //
It's not easy this week to resist the temptation to stretch
the truth and try to establish some special link to the Italian
community or to Spain, whose ships and sailors carried Columbus
to the New World. // I will resist it. / I was telling that to my
2
aides last week as we headed to a meeting in our three cars --
the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. )) //
Emerson once said, "Every ship that comes to America got its
chart from Columbus." For half-a-millennium, what Columbus
discovered has helped chart the course of exploration and
opportunity -- sailing freedom's ship to every corner of the
earth. //
Today, we salute a hemisphere moving toward democracy and
free enterprise -- aided by initiatives like our Enterprise for
the Americas. It is my hope that this Quintencenary will
commemorate the common heritage of America and its neighbors. //
In addition, we salute not only Columbus' spirit of adventure but
also the story of this Nation -- unafraid / ever-changing /
challenging the unknown / devoted to the blessings of liberty and
the principles that unite all Americans. //
Columbus Day celebrates the idea that we do not value
diversity merely because America is strong -- America is strong
because we value diversity. // In that spirit, it is now my
