PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS:
U.S. WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM
ROOM 450, OEOB
THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 1992
Thank you all for coming, and welcome to the White House.
Coach Anson Dorrance, guiding light of our Women's National
Soccer Champions. J.B. Marine --- U.S. Youth Soccer Association
Champions. The Potomac School Panthers -- Independent School
League Divisional Champs. Georgetown Visitation's team -- D.C.'s
Independent Schools League Champs. Special Olympics Virginia
Champions. \ It's great to join you in honoring a group of women
who reflect a favorite American pastime. \ It's called winning.
Federations ANTERNATIONA,
Leave it to an American team to win the first FIFA World
the
DE
Championship. And leave it to an American women's team to win
our first World Soccer Championship title ever. \ Someone
FOOTBALL
JOHN
once
said that "sport was the first great separator of the sexes."
For the sake of the male ego, I hope the guys start catching up.
ASSOCIATION
It may take a while to describe your terrific lineup. 11 I in
of you exploits -
think of Michelle Akers-Stahl (AY kers STAAL), winner of the
Golden Boot Award. She scored the winning goal, showing what
Hemingway called "grace under pressure." 11 Then, there's Carla
Werden, Debbie Belkin, Lori Henry, Joy Biefeld (BEE feld) --
giving new meaning to the term "U.S. Defense." 11
Next comes "Crazy Legs" Karen Jennings on offense. And
Julie Foudy (FOW dee), who I understand was found studying
2
biology before the winning game. Finally, here's to Tracey
Bates, who I think is the real reason why Arnold Schwarzenegger
said he couldn't make it today. \ Coach Dorrance calls her the
Tiny Terminator. 11
For each of you, winning the cup capped a long road of sweat
and sacrifice. \ First the qualifying tournament in Haiti, where
I hear you ran circles around the competition -- scoring 49 goals
in 5 games. Then your trek to China for the grueling
championship tournament. ( (I was told that many of you weren't
used to some of the more exotic Chinese delicacies like duck feet
and snake. You even invented your own slogan: "Come to China; we
take off the weight. "))
In the championship you took on tough opposition. You edged
Sweden, 3-2. / You upset Germany, 5-2. \ You beat the
injuries, the odds, and on November 30th, you proved yourselves
again -- ousting Norway for the World Cup. 11 No wonder Michelle
Akers-Stahl said: "This team never gives up." 11 You showed how
America can outscore -- outfight -- and outcompete any nation in
the world. 11
That kind of spirit that made you champions: The American
spirit -- proud \ confident \ determined \ victorious. 11 I
remember the day when America's athletic excellence was limited
to the diamond and the gridiron. 11 Today, Americans are taking
over everywhere from sumo to soccer. 11 And as proof of just
how far soccer has come in this country, the U.S. will proudly
host the 1994 World Cup Championship.
3
Let me say to today's champions: Your victory is an
inspiration to all our athletes -- male and female, young and
old. 11 Thank you for winning one for America -- you've made us
all so very proud. God bless you. Our nation salutes you. And
God bless that nation -- the United States of America.

SOMEONE ONCE SAID THAT "SPORT WAS THE FIRST GREAT
SEPARATOR OF THE SEXES." FOR THE SAKE OF THE MALE EGO,
I HOPE THE GUYS START CATCHING UP.
IT MAY TAKE A WHILE TO DESCRIBE YOUR TERRIFIC
LINEUP. 11 I'M TOLD OF YOUR EXPLOITS, OF MICHELLE
AKERS-STAHL (AY-KERS STAAL), WINNER OF THE GOLDEN BooT
AWARD. SHE SCORED THE WINNING GOAL, SHOWING WHAT
HEMINGWAY CALLED "GRACE UNDER PRESSURE." 11
- 4 -
THEN, THERE'S CARLA WERDEN, DEBBIE BELKIN, LORI HENRY,
JOY BIEFELD (BEE-FELD) -- GIVING NEW MEANING TO THE
TERM "U.S. DEFENSE." 11

AND JULIE FOUDY (FOW-DEE), WHO I UNDERSTAND WAS FOUND
STUDYING BIOLOGY BEFORE THE WINNING GAME. 11 FINALLY,
HERE'S TO TRACEY BATES, WHO I THINK IS THE REAL REASON
WHY ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER SAID HE COULDN'T MAKE IT
TODAY. 1 COACH DORRANCE CALLS HER THE TINY TERMINATOR.
11
- 5 -
FOR EACH OF YOU, WINNING THE CUP CAPPED A LONG ROAD
OF SWEAT AND SACRIFICE. \ FIRST THE QUALIFYING

THEN YOUR TREK TO CHINA FOR THE GRUELING CHAMPIONSHIP

TO SOME OF THE MORE EXOTIC CHINESE DELICACIES LIKE DUCK
FEET AND SNAKE. You EVEN INVENTED YOUR OWN SLOGAN:
"COME TO CHINA; WE TAKE OFF THE WEIGHT. "))
- 6 -
IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP YOU TOOK ON TOUGH OPPOSITION.
You EDGED SWEDEN, 3-2. \ You UPSET GERMANY, 5-2.
-
You BEAT THE INJURIES, THE ODDS, AND ON NOVEMBER 30TH,
YOU PROVED YOURSELVES AGAIN -- OUSTING NORWAY FOR THE
WORLD CUP. 11 No WONDER MICHELLE AKERS-STAHL SAID:
"THIS TEAM NEVER GIVES UP." 11 You SHOWED HOW AMERICA
CAN OUTSCORE -- OUTFIGHT -- AND OUTCOMPETE ANY NATION
IN THE WORLD. 11
- 7 -
THAT KIND OF SPIRIT MADE YOU CHAMPIONS: THE
AMERICAN SPIRIT -- PROUD \ CONFIDENT \ DETERMINED \
VICTORIOUS. 11 I REMEMBER THE DAY WHEN AMERICA'S
ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE WAS LIMITED TO THE DIAMOND AND THE
GRIDIRON. 11 TODAY, AMERICANS ARE TAKING OVER
EVERYWHERE FROM SUMO TO SOCCER. 11 AND AS PROOF OF
JUST HOW FAR SOCCER HAS COME IN THIS COUNTRY, THE U.S.
WILL PROUDLY HOST THE 1994 WORLD CUP CHAMPIONSHIP.
- 8 -
LET ME SAY TO TODAY'S CHAMPIONS: YOUR VICTORY IS
AN INSPIRATION TO ALL OUR ATHLETES -- MALE AND FEMALE,

WORLD
*
Soccer is the world's most popular sport and the
fastest growing team sport in America. Today, there are
over 16 million soccer participants in the U.S. Annual
growth of the sport exceeds 10% per year.
1991 WC'94 TM
*
Of the 16 million soccer participants, almost 40% are
women under the age of 19. The U.S. Women's National Team
is the first "graduating class" to come up through the ranks
since the growth of soccer began to skyrocket in the early
1970s.
*
The world took note as the U.S. Women's National Team
emerged victorious in the first FIFA Women's World
Championship in Guangzhou, China. This victory sets the
stage for the U.S. to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup -- the
largest single sporting event in the world.
*
America has a tradition of welcoming the world to its
shores, and from June 17 - July 17, 1994, America will be
home to the entire sports world as it welcomes over 30
billion televiewers and potentially one million spectators
from overseas.
*
The economic implications of the World Cup in the
United States are significant. For each of the twelve
venues selected it is (as a minimum) the equivalent of
hosting a Super Bowl. Estimates on foreign visitor dollars
generated by this event range in excess of one billion
dollars, in addition to creating a positive impact on the
balance of trade, creating new jobs, and showcasing America
and her 12 venue sites as a tourism destination.
*
The World Cup will be a nationwide -- and indeed
worldwide -- celebration of sports and culture.

ROOM 450, OEOB
THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 1992
Thank you all for coming, and welcome to the White House.
Coach Anson Dorrance, guiding light of our Women's National
Soccer Champions. J.B. Marine -- winners of the Athena Cup. The
Local Boys and Girls Club. The Potomac School. Georgetown
Visitation's team -- D.C.'s Independent Schools League Champs. /
It's great to join you in honoring a group of women who reflect a
favorite American pastime. / It's called winning. //
Leave it to an American team to win the first FIFA World
Championship. And leave it to an American women's team to win
our first World Soccer Championship title ever. / Someone once
said that "sport was the first great separator of the sexes." "
For the sake of the male ego, I hope the guys start catching up.
//
It may take a while to describe your terrific lineup. 11
I think of Michelle Akers-Stahl, winner of the Golden Boot Award.
She scored the winning goal, and showed what Hemingway called
"grace under pressure.' // Then, there's Carla Werden, Debbie
Belkin, Lori Henry, Joy Biefeld -- giving new meaning to the term
"U.S. Defense. " //
Next comes "Crazy Legs" Karen Jennings on offense. // And
Julie Foudy (FOW dee), who I understand was found studying
2
biology before the winning game. // Finally, here's to Tracey
Bates, who I think is the real reason why Arnold Schwarzenegger
said he couldn't make it today. / Coach Dorrance calls her the
Tiny Terminator. //
For each of you, winning the cup capped a long road of sweat
and sacrifice. / Let's remember, first, the qualifying
tournament in Haiti, where I hear your ran circles around the
competition -- scoring 49 goals in 5 games. / Then, your trek to
China for the grueling championship tournament. ( (I was told
that many of you weren't used to some of the more exotic Chinese
delicacies like duck feet and snake. You even invented your own
slogan: "Come to China; we take off the weight. ") ) //
In the championship, it was opponents you took after. You
edged Sweden, 3-2. / You upset Germany, 5-2. / You beat
injuries, the odds, and on November 30th, your last rival --
ousting Norway for the World Cup. 11 No wonder Michelle Akers-
