XV FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee U.S. WOMEN'S NATIONAL TEAM WHITE HOUSE VISIT TALKING POINTS Thursday, January 23, 1992 2:30 p.m. CUP ,94 WORLD * Soccer is the world's most popular sport and the fastest growing team sport in America. Today, there are over 16 million soccer participants in the U.S. Annual growth of the sport exceeds 10% per year. 1991 WC'94 TM * Of the 16 million soccer participants, almost 40% are women under the age of 19. The U.S. Women's National Team is the first "graduating class" to come up through the ranks since the growth of soccer began to skyrocket in the early 1970s. * The world took note as the U.S. Women's National Team emerged victorious in the first FIFA Women's World Championship in Guangzhou, China. This victory sets the stage for the U.S. to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup -- the largest single sporting event in the world. * America has a tradition of welcoming the world to its shores, and from June 17 - July 17, 1994, America will be home to the entire sports world as it welcomes over 30 billion televiewers and potentially one million spectators from overseas. * The economic implications of the World Cup in the United States are significant. For each of the twelve venues selected it is (as a minimum) the equivalent of hosting a Super Bowl. Estimates on foreign visitor dollars generated by this event range in excess of one billion dollars, in addition to creating a positive impact on the balance of trade, creating new jobs, and showcasing America and her 12 venue sites as a tourism destination. * The World Cup will be a nationwide -- and indeed worldwide -- celebration of sports and culture.
