PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: VISIT TO BUSH QUAYLE HEADQUARTERS
APRIL 28, 1992
x:00 P.M.
Thank you.
You know, there's a rumor around that there's no real
political enthusiasm this year -- do you think maybe that rumor's
wrong?
Well, let me ask you this -- do you think Dan Quayle has
defied what his opponents said, and become what I always knew
he'd be, A Great Vice President?
Do you think the next First Lady of the United States should
be a lady named Barbara?
Alright. Just checking.
I wanted to come over here today because the past few weeks
I've been thinking about the men and women who get little
attention and few rewards, but who've kept this campaign going:
and that's the volunteers and workers of the Bush-Quayle
campaign.
But there's another reason I came here today. For a long
time now, I've believed 1105 is my magic number. And I believe
tonight is going to be a big night. //
You know, I started in politics as a volunteer. Thirty
years ago I was out there in Texas handing out pamphlets and
bumper stickers. Answered my share of telephones. Stuffed a few
envelopes.
So I know what makes you do what you do. Belief. Trust.
And the hope that your efforts will help make this a better
country, and even a better world.
I've been thinking about my predecessor in the White House -
- a great man named Ronald Reagan. About his faith in the good
people of this great country -- about his firm commitment to do
everything he could to lead and protect the United states of
America.
I believe that the modern Republican Party -- our Republican
Party -- must do what Franklin Roosevelt's Democrats did in the
1930's and '40's. And that's win enough time and support from
the voters to get our programs through, and get our philosophies
in place.
For all the talk of problems, and troubles -- and our
country has both, never been a moment in its life when it didn't
-- but for all our problems and troubles, it's important to keep
some things in mind. We have a lot to be proud of -- but nothing
to be complacent about. We have a lot of work to do.
Together, we must rekindle a revolution -- a revolution to
bring change to the country that's changed the world.
The way we do it is through reform.
We've got to fight for free and fair trade -- to open new
markets the world over to American goods, new markets that will
mean new jobs for American workers. We've got to fight for legal
reform -- to end the explosion of litigation that strains our
patience and saps our economy. America would be better off if we
spent less time suing each other and more time helping one
another. We've got to reform this country's health care system -
- open up access to all Americans, control the run-away cost of
health care, without sacrificing choice and quality.
We've sparked a revolution in American education --
community by community, to help our children get the world-class
education our new world demands. And finally, we've got to push
forward on government reform -- because only if we reverse a
generation of creeping bureaucracy, only if we restore limits to
government, can we restore public trust. //
I've seen the polls, I've heard the prognostications.
There are some who say this election year will be tough and hard
fought. And I say, Fine. Nothing like a good fair fight.
Especially when it's about big things, like the future of our
country.
I hear some who say that the Republican Era is over. And I
think: Really? Pardon me, but: I disagree.
Let me tell you a secret: I'm not done yet. I'm going to
keep working and arguing for change and putting forth our ideas
to lead our nation into the next century
And I intend to win this thing. I intend to win.
Will you help me?
Then that settles it, because together there's nothing we
can't do.
Thank you all. God bless you, and God bless the United
States of America.
