BRYAN DOESN'T KNOW WHAT A GOLD MEDAL IS YET, BUT HIS

SUMMER OLYMPICS
SOUTH LAWN
TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1992
5:00 P.M.
William Hybl [HIB-el], President of the U.S. Olympic
Committee. Fellow athletes and Americans. Welcome to the White
House. It's an honor to have the U.S. Olympic team here, though
I almost didn't recognize you without Bob Costas as a voiceover.
I want to welcome you to the White House, and to extend this
message: Whether you won a gold, silver, bronze, or simply gave
your best, you're all winners in the eyes of each American. /
Over the last couple of weeks America was completely caught
up in the Olympic spirit. For instance, the other night Barbara
asked me to help her re-arrange a couple of chairs. I said,
"What's the degree of difficulty?" //
For sixteen days / over hundreds of hours / you showed how
competition lifts the human spirit -- and how that spirit lifts
the American character. / When I was a boy I read a quote about
"the game [being] well worth the candle burned long into the
night. " / Now, I'm told your nights in Barcelona were long. /
But I'm betting that your candle will last still longer. //
Each Olympics is one for the record books. This Olympics
was one for the history books. / Our world has been remade
since Seoul -- and we Americans helped remake it. In 1989, a
wall crumbled in Berlin. This summer, more barriers tumbled in
2
Barcelona. / This was an Olympics without boycotts / without
terrorism / without politics -- and that's as it should be. /
East and West Germany / black and white South Africans /
North and South Koreans: One by one, the old divisions gave way.
The world watched as countries that didn't even exist at the last
Olympics took their place on the field -- and the medals stand.
Think of that. You know what it means to make America a
winner. Think what it must mean to be the first athlete to bring
a medal home to Latvia or Croatia. / They -- like you -- made
this an Olympics truly worthy of its name. /
Today we honor the fastest and strongest of America's
athletes. Here's what I like even more: You're among its most
inspirational. / Beside me is Shannon Miller -- who overcame a
bone chip in her elbow. We recall, too, Gail Devers overcoming
her Graves Disease -- or Charles Barkley overcoming his shyness.
/ That brings me to Oscar De La Hoya. He not only brought home
the gold -- he brought honor to his mother's memory. / Each of
them competed / competed to win / for the family called America.
Ask diver Mark Lenzi what it takes to get the Gold. He'll
tell you about dad's carpools or mom's care packages -- his
favorite brownies, her special lasagna. / Talk to Summer
Sanders, one of swimming's "New Kids on the Block." She'll say
that "success comes down to the support of people around you. " /
( (Let me add, I'm especially amazed by the synchronized swimmers.
Maybe it's because I live in a city where it's tough to get any
two people to agree on anything. )) //

Family? Look at the Oden sisters -- Kim and Elaina --
volleyball's "Sisters of Smash. / Then, there's the men's

to Janet Evans and Carl Lewis. From Gigi and Mary Jo Fernandez
to the woman -- Leora "Sam" Jones -- representing those who won
not only medals but also our hearts. The list of heroes goes on
-- but I'll stop there. Suffice it to say that in Barcelona this
Nation became your family -- and why not? Sports aren't abstract

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: SUMMER OLYMPICS

, President of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Fellow
athletes, and Americans. / Welcome to the White House. / It's
an honor to have the U.S. Olympic team here, though I almost
didn't recognize you without Bob Costas as a voiceover. /
First, it's nice to see our great Olympic athletes without
hearing the words, "We'll be right back after this message. /
Today my message comes from a grateful people: Whether you took
home a gold, silver, bronze, or simply gave your best, you're all
winners in the eyes of every American. //
Over the last couple of weeks America was completely caught
up in the Olympic spirit. For instance, the other night Barbara
asked me to help her re-arrange a couple of chairs in the
residence. I said, "What's the degree of difficulty?" //
For sixteen days / over hundreds of hours / you showed how
competition lifts the human spirit -- and how that spirit lifts
the American character. / When I was a boy I read a quote about
"the game [being] well worth the candle burned long into the
night.' / Now, I'm told your nights in Barcelona were long. /
But I'm betting that your candle will last still longer. //
Think of the inspirational stories at the 1992 Summer Games.
Gail Devers overcoming her Graves Disease. Gail -- we don't love
you because you're the world's fastest woman. We love you
2
because you're among its most courageous women. / Inspiration
also means Shannon Miller overcoming a bone chip in her elbow --
or Dave Johnson overcoming an ankle injury to medal in the
decathlon -- or Charles Barkley overcoming his shyness. // Each
competed / competed to win / for the family called America. /
Ask anybody who still hears Dick Enberg and Katie Couric
talking in their sleep. / Ask diver Mark Lenzi. He'll tell you
about dad's endless carpools or mom's care packages -- his
favorite brownies, her special lasagna. / Talk to Summer
Sanders, one of swimming's "New Kids on the Block.' " She'll say
that "success comes down to the people around you. " / ( (Let me
add, I'm especially amazed by the synchronized swimmers. Maybe
it's because I live in a city where it's tough to get any two
people to agree on anything.) ) //
Family? Look at the Odens sisters -- Kim and Elaina --
volleyball's "Sisters of Smash. " // Then, there's the male
volleyball team. We've had a lot of athletes proudly represent
the symbol of the bald eagle -- but they're the first to look
like one. //
Next, look at Gwen Torrence: With her two-year-old son,
this sprinter shifts the mommy track into the passing lane. //
She calls her husband, / "my backbone." He calls her "priority
number one. II / All of us have needed help to clear hurdles that
once seemed impossible. Maybe that's why Ken Capriati and Carl
Lewis and Kevin Young and Jackie Joyner-Kersee won the love not
just of relatives -- but of Americans they'll never meet. / In
3
Barcelona an entire Nation became your No. 1 fan club -- and why?
Because sports isn't abstract -- it's flesh and blood. Americans
see you -- and they relate. //
Bruce Baumgartner shows what I'm talking about. / ( (First,
let me say that watching him on TV, he's even stronger than I
thought you were. Bruce, whenever you feel your heavy
weightlifting equipment isn't enough of a challenge, you're
welcome to drop by and bench-press the Federal budget. )) /
days ago, Bruce called his two-year son, Bryan, in
-
Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. / The day was doubly special.
It was the Opening Day of the Olympics. It was also Bryan's
birthday. / Bryan doesn't know what a gold medal is yet, but his
mother coached him to say, "Bring home the gold medal. " / Last
Thursday, he did. //
The poet Walt Whitman once said, "The Republic is a dream.
Nothing happens unless first a dream." The final athletes I want
to talk about were a Dream Team which made things happen. / Last
May the Harlem Globetrotters visited the White House. I told
them I too got a lot of laughs when I played basketball. The
difference is they're funny on purpose. // The Dream Team made
opponents cry -- not laugh. Some called them poetry in motion.
I call them history in action. / And to those who think our
basketball team might be less competitive four years from now in
Atlanta, I have two words to say: Shaquille O'Neal. //
In the movie, Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger uttered the
words, "Hasta la vista, baby". That's what you've said to couch
4
potatoes. / You've inspired the mom who plays softball with her
boys / the dad shooting hoops with his kids / the family who
knows that sports teach more than just how to throw a knuckleball
or drive the lane. / ((You've also shown that sports are
ageless. Take Pablo Morales, the swimmer who missed out in '84,
didn't make the team in '88, then came back this year to earn a
gold medal -- the ripe old age of 27. Let that be a lesson:
never count an old man out. Pablo's proof positive that youth
and inexperience are no match for maturity and determination. ) )

Today my message comes from a grateful people: Whether you took

Over the last couple of weeks America was completely caught

basketball team might be less competitive four years from now in
Atlanta, I have two words to say: Shaquille O'Neal. //
In the movie, Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger uttered the
words, "Hasta la vista, baby". That's what you've said to couch
4

boys / the dad shooting hoops with his kids / the family who
knows that sports teach more than just how to throw a knuckleball
or drive the lane. / ((You've also shown that sports are
ageless. Take Pablo Morales, the swimmer who missed out in '84,
didn't make the team in '88, then came back this year to earn a
gold medal -- the ripe old age of 27. Let that be a lesson:
never count an old man out. Pablo's proof positive that youth
and inexperience are no match for maturity and determination. ))
Earlier, I mentioned California's Odens sisters. Once, Kim
explained why they both were so competitive. "It's simple," she
said. "We weren't raised to be quitters." //
How true for each of you -- indeed, for all America. In
Barcelona you scored a knockout punch: medals, most since
.
-
You wrote this definition of excellence: U.S.A. -- Number One. /
A proverb says, "On the day of victory no one is tired." Today
we celebrate Olympians who -- like America -- are victorious,

Thank you -- now, let's get on to the barbecue. God bless
you, and the wondrous land you have made so proud -- the United
States of America.

THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
August 9, 1992
MEMORANDUM FOR STEVE PROVOST/DAN MCGROARTY
FROM:
John S. Gardner
Josh
SUBJECT:
Olympics Remarks
Curt did a good job on this, and I don't want to make it overly
serious, but I think that it misses a real opportunity for the
President to make people feel good about America. This speech
will be covered by sportswriters, who will perhaps be inclined to
write sympathetically about some good observations by the
President.
We should not hesitate to describe these Games as being in many
ways an American Olympics. Consider:
--
The very high number of athletes from other nations who
trained in the U.S. Frank Fredericks of Namibia, who won
the silver in the 100 and 200m dashes; an Irish swimmer who
trained at the University of Houston; and many, many others.
To get a real sense of the strength of American athletics,
training, and university education, one should add all the
medals won by foreigners who trained in the U.S. to those
won by Americans.
:
American leadership in sports generally. So many of the
innovations in equipment, training, and coaching which have
led to new triumphs were developed by Americans. We have
not lost our technological edge, nor our know-how,
creativity, and inventiveness.
This was the first Summer Games since the end of the Cold
War. A Ukrainian athlete won the women's gymnastics gold
(Gutsu). Look on the medal stand for men's basketball --
two of the countries there - Croatia and Lithuania -- did
not even exist at the Seoul Olympics. And Americans rallied
to help the Lithuanian team afford their trip to Barcelona.
I'd shorten some of the specific references to athletes and
include these themes. This is hastily written, but I hope the
themes are clear.
"In so many ways, even though the Games themselves were held
in spain, they were an American Olympics. Not just because of
SENT BY:Xerox Telecopier 7020 ; 8-10-92 ; 2:39PM ;
4562983-
2024566218:# 3
the horde of medals you brought back, nor even because your
positive American spirit ran through the Games like wildfire.
"Instead, I'm thinking of all America did to make these
Olympics possible. Look at the extraordinary number of athletes
from foreign nations who trained here, at our colleges and
universities. Frank Fredericks of Namibia, silver medalist in
the mens 100 and 200 meter dashes, who trained at BYU. An Irish
swimmer who swam at the University of Houston. [Third example.]
And when I see people coming from all around the world to share
in our success, I know we can make elementary and secondary
education the best in the world, just as our higher education
system now is -- and I know we can keep our kids off drugs and
crime and on sports and life. Each of you has a role to play in
that, and I challenge you to give that your all.
"Second, I think of American leadership in sports -- new
technology, new equipment, new coaching styles. After the Games
of Barcelona, don't let anyone say that Americans have lost our
creativity, our know-how, our technological edge -- or our will
to beat the competition and win. [[And let's not forget that
American companies -- the private sector -- finance so much of
our athletes' training and so many opportunities for other
countries to compete.]
"Third, at the Olympics, we all saw so graphically how the
world has changed since Seoul. Look at men's basketball -- two
of the countries with teams on the medal stand did not even exist
two years ago. This was an Olympics without boycotts, without
terrorism, without politics -- just sports. And that's the way
it should be."
Beyond this, two other points. We really should include a
reference to Magic in the section on the Dream Team. I realize
he's upset with us over AIDS funding, but the truth is that he
put the team together, convinced people to participate, and
served as the unifying force for often fractious personalities.
Just a simple "Magic, thanks for your dream of a Dream Team"
would suffice.
Finally, there really should be a plug for the Atlanta Games.
As I wrote above, I just think we're missing an opportunity on
this. The media probably expects something like the current
draft, which is one reason to change it. I'd be happy to discuss
further if you like.

was one for the history books.
Our world has been remade since Seoul. and we Americans
helped remake it. In 1989, a Wall crumbled in Berlin. This
summer more barriers tumbled in Barcelona. This was an Olympics
without boycotts / without terrorism / without politics. This
was an Olympics that made our spirits soar.
East and West Germany
...
black and white South Africans
North and South Koreans: one by one, the old divisions gave way.
The world watched as countries that didn't even exist at the last
Olympics took their place on the field -- and on the medals
stand.
Think about that. You know what it means to make America a
winner. Think what it must mean to be the first athlete to bring
a medal home to Lithuania or Croatia. //

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: SUMMER OLYMPICS
SOUTH LAWN
TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1992
, President of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Fellow
athletes, and Americans. / Welcome to the White House. / It's
an honor to have the U.S. Olympic team here, though I almost
didn't recognize you without Bob Costas as a voiceover. /
First, it's nice to see our great Olympic athletes without
hearing the words, "We'll be right back after this message." /
Today my message comes from a grateful people: Whether you took
home a gold, silver, bronze, or simply gave your best, you're all
winners in the eyes of every American. //
Over the last couple of weeks America was completely caught
up in the Olympic spirit. For instance, the other night Barbara
asked me to help her re-arrange a couple of chairs in the
residence. I said, "What's the degree of difficulty?" //
For sixteen days / over hundreds of hours / you showed how
competition lifts the human spirit -- and how that spirit lifts
the American character. / When I was a boy I read a quote about
"the game [being] well worth the candle burned long into the
night. " / Now, I'm told your nights in Barcelona were long. /
But I'm betting that your candle will last still longer.
Maybe
it's because I live in a city where it's tough to get any two
people to agree on anything. )) //
Family? Look at the Odens sisters -- Kim and Elaina --
volleyball's "Sisters of Smash." // Then, there's the male
volleyball team. We've had a lot of athletes proudly represent
the symbol of the bald eagle -- but they're the first to look
like one. //
Next, look at Gwen Torrence: With her two-year-old son,
this sprinter shifts the mommy track into the passing lane. //
She calls her husband, , "my backbone." He calls her "priority
number one. " / All of us have needed help to clear hurdles that
once seemed impossible.
((First,
let me say that watching him on TV, he's even stronger than I
thought you were. Bruce, whenever you feel your heavy
weightlifting equipment isn't enough of a challenge, you're
welcome to drop by and bench-press the Federal budget.) )) /
days ago, Bruce called his two-year son, Bryan, in
-
Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. / The day was doubly special.
It was the Opening Day of the Olympics. It was also Bryan's
birthday. / Bryan doesn't know what a gold medal is yet, but his
mother coached him to say, "Bring home the gold medal. / Last
Thursday, he did.
Pablo's proof positive that youth
and inexperience are no match for maturity and determination. ))
Earlier, I mentioned California's Odens sisters. Once, Kim
explained why they both were so competitive. "It's simple," she
said. "We weren't raised to be quitters.' " //
How true for each of you -- indeed, for all America. In
Barcelona you scored a knockout punch: medals, most since
.
-
-
You wrote this definition of excellence: U.S.A. -- Number One. /
A proverb says, "On the day of victory no one is tired. " Today
we celebrate Olympians who -- like America -- are victorious,
refreshed, and free. //
Thank you -- now, let's get on to the barbecue. God bless
you, and the wondrous land you have made so proud -- the United
States of America.
