MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
FROM:
STEVE PROVOST
sp
SUBJECT:
CONVENTION WELCOME RALLY
On Monday, August 17th, at 5:30 p.m. you will deliver
remarks (10 minutes/teleprompted) to approximately 7,000
attendees at the Houston Astro Arena.
Your remarks give a nod to the accomplishments of Dan
Quayle, reflect on your Texas roots, and generally give the
partisan crowd an excuse to yell and hoot a little.
The soundbite is: "We are running against the 'Karaoke Kids'
-- they'll sing any tune it takes to get elected." Karaoke
(care-ee-Oh-key) is the craze currently sweeping middle-america,
where people sing popular songs off teleprompters.

Presidential Remarks
Astro Arena Rally
Houston, Texas
Thank you and good afternoon everybody.
Let me just say -- it sure feels great to be home again!
My critics like to say I was born to privilege. But you
know, that's not quite accurate
I never said I was born a
Texan. //
I have a little secret for all of you. I figured out a
surefire way to knock it into the cheap seats of the Astrodome
Thursday night -- a speech hailed in every corner of this land
for its elegance and its emotion. I've asked Barbara to deliver
it for me.//
I also want to say a word about two special friends who are
with us -- Dan and Marilyn Quayle.
Four years ago in New Orleans, I asked Dan Quayle to serve
our country as Vice President. I told him then -- speaking from
personal experience -- that the job was a real "character
builder -- I wasn't exaggerating.
But in the face of his critics, Dan Quayle has never
wavered. He has told simply told the truth -- let the chips fall
where they may.
The Vice President says we need families to stick together,
and fathers who stick around. // We need an America that stands
2
behind our cops, and stands up to lawyers who are all over us
like a bad lawsuit. // When Dan says these things -- the
establishment in Washington holds their noses -- but folks in
Waco nod their heads. // Let me just say -- with Dan Quayle on
the job -- Americans are going to be nodding in agreement for
four more years. //
I couldn't help but notice an interview my opponent gave to
USA Today last week. He talked about how he is already planning
his transition -- figuring out who should be Deputy Under
Secretary in every Washington bureaucracy, even where he can get
away from the White House for a day or two. After reading the
article, I half expected to come to work Friday morning and find
someone in the Oval Office measuring the drapes.
Well, today I have a message for my opponent. Put the
drapes on hold. //
Forget the drapes. Because pretty soon, it's curtain
time. //
For nine months, the other side has had a one-way
conversation with the American people. Now -- it's our turn.
They have called America a "mockery" -- and sounded the
saxaphone of change. But if you listen real close -- their song
sure sounds familiar.
They say they want to shake up Washington -- but oppose
limiting terms of Congressmen. I guess that's change -- changing
the subject.
3
They say they believe in a strong America -- but propose
gutting our national defense. I guess that's change -- changing
their tune.
They say they want to "put people first" -- but propose the
largest tax increase in history. //
I guess that's change -- because by the time they're through
-- change is all you will have left in your pocket. //
Don't kid yourself, we're not running against the "Comeback
Kids." We're running against the "Karaoke (care - ee - OH -key)
Kids" -- they'll sing any tune they think will get them
elected. //
You know me, I'm not much for words. To me -- real
eloquence is action. For the next 78 days, we are going to ask
the American people a simple question -- who do you trust to do
what is right for America?/ /
You know, Barbara and I started out here many, many years
ago. I remember traveling to towns like Wink and Muleshoe and
Notrees. Places where parents worried and watched when a kid
crossed the street -- the kind of towns that sent kids halfway
around the world -- from the DMZ, to Da Nang, and to Desert
Storm. //
Barbara and I loved the rhythms of West Texas. Friday night
football -- Saturday picnics -- and Sunday sermons. We raised a
family -- built a business -- made friends who have lasted a
lifetime. We worked hard -- 'cause Texans always work hard. But
when the work was done, we sat around the table late at night --
4
and we talked. Talked about report cards and schoolyard fights -
- about small things, and big dreams.
No matter what the other side says, America is still a land
of dreams -- dreams as vast and wide as the plains of West Texas.
Our ideals -- our ideas -- have awakened dreams from Managua to
Moscow. And with faith in our people, we will reawaken dreams
right here in America.
My opponent wants to protect the jobs of the past. I have a
plan, to help create a laptop, disk-driven, high tech economy, so
that the sons and daughters of steelworkers and linemen can find
great jobs and build new dreams. // My opponent wants to change
our schools -- just a little bit, so that our kids can do a
little bit better. I have a plan, to revolutionize our schools,
so that our kids do as well in the science lab and math room as
they now do in the swimming pool and the basketball court. // My
opponent refuses to make the tough calls on real welfare reform,
and school prayer. I have a plan, to add a little moral fiber to
our nation's diet, to make American families a little bit less
like the Simpsons and a little bit more like the Waltons. //
The special interests don't like our ideas. The teacher's
unions, the ABA, the Ralph Nader's -- these "patrons of the past"
-- they flee from real change like a rat from a rattlesnake.
And when it comes to the leaders of Congress -- well, they
are the "Sultans of the Status Quo." The only people in America
who could drive to work with a blindfold every morning, because
they've been going the same way for 36 years. // If I can steal
5
a little Texanese -- Congress needs change the way a bird dog
needs a bath. // I'm going to convince the American people -- to
start the hot water running. / /
The polls say it's going to be a tough fight, we all
know that. I could tell you that I ignore the polls, but that
would not be completely accurate. The truth is -- polls give me
some comfort.
Back when I was running for Senate, we had a baseball team
here, some of you might remember. They were called the "Colt
45's". Ever since the Colt 45's were here in Houston, I admit,
I've been a sucker for the underdog.
In politics, I've always done best when I'm behind. Because
you get a certain freedom. The other guy can do what the pols
(pahls) want, the other side can pay attention to what the polls
demand -- I'm just going to roll up my sleeves -- and do what's
right for America. //
Down the road not far from here, there's a big building they
call the eighth wonder of the world. Well, Houston, get ready
for wonder number nine -- the most stirring political comeback
since Harry Truman gave 'em hell in '48.//
It all starts right here, right now. The Gatlin Brothers
like to sing that, "Houston means I'm one day closer to you. "
No offense to Larry and the gang, but to me Houston means we
are one day closer to victory. One day closer to building a
better and brighter future for America.
6
Barbara and I want to thank you all for coming out here.
God bless Houston, and God bless the United States of America.

Dan has been tempted to come into the Oval Office and say -- "I
think I have more than enough character, thank you. "
But in the face of his critics, Dan Quayle has never
wavered. He has told simply told the truth -- let the chips fall
where they may.
The Vice President says we need families to stick together,
and fathers who stick around. We need an America that stands
behind our cops, and stand up to lawyers who are all over us like
a bad lawsuit. When Dan says these things -- the establishment
in Washington hold their noses -- but folks in Waco nod their
heads. // Let me just say -- with Dan Quayle on the job --
Americans are going to be nodding in agreement for four more
years //
We come to Houston for some straight talk with the American
people. Our opponents have had their turn. They have called
America a laughingstock -- and sounded the saxaphone of change.
But if you listen real close -- their song sure sounds
familiar. They say they want to shake up Washington -- but
oppose limiting terms of Congressmen. I guess that's change
-- changing the subject.
They say they believe in a strong America -- but propose
gutting our national defense. I guess that's change -- changing
their tune.
They say they want to "put people first" -- but propose the
largest tax increase in history and $200 billion dollars in new
spending. //
I guess that's change -- because by the time they're through
with you -- change is all you will have left in your pocket.
Don't kid yourself, we're not running against the "Comeback
Kids.' " We're running against the "Karaoke Kids" -- they'll sing
any tune they think will get them elected. //
You know me, I'm not much for words. To me -- the real
eloquence is action. For the next 78 days, we are going to ask
the American people a simple question -- who do you trust to take
the real action that will change America?/ /
You know, Barbara and I started out here many, many years
ago. I remember traveling to towns like Wink and Kermit and
Crane. Places where parents worried and watched when a kid
crossed the street -- the kind of towns that sent kids halfway
around the world -- to fight in (Korea), Da Nang, and Desert
Storm.
Barbara and I loved the rhythms of West Texas. Friday night
football -- Saturday picnics -- and Sunday sermons. We raised a
family --- built a business -- made friends who have lasted a
lifetime.
We worked hard -- 'cause Texans always work hard.
But when the work was done, we sat around the table late at night
-- and we talked. Talked about report cards and schoolyard
fights -- about small things, and big dreams.
No matter what the other side says, America is still a land
of dreams -- dreams as vast and wide as the plains of West Texas.
Our ideals -- our ideas -- have awakened dreams from Managua to
Moscow. And now that we have changed the world, it is high time
that we change America.
I have a plan, to help build a laptop, disk-driven, high
tech economy, so that the sons and daughters of steelworkers and
minors can find a job, and build new dreams.// I have a plan, to
rebuild our schools, so that our kids can perform as well in the
science lab and math tests as they do in the swimming pool and
the basketball court. // I have a plan, to restore a little moral
fiber to our nation's diet, to make our families a little bit
less like the Simpsons and a little bit more like the Waltons. //
The special interests don't like my ideas -- you know that.
The teacher's unions, the ABA, the Ralph Nader's -- these
"patrons of the past" -- they flee from change like a rat from
rattlesnake.
And when it comes to the leaders of Congress -- the "Sultans
of the Status Quo" -- well, if I can steal a little Texanese --
they need change the way a bird dog needs a bath. //
The polls say it's going to be a tough fight, we know that.
I could tell you that I ignore the polls, but that would not be
completely honest. The truth is -- the polls give me some
comfort. Let me tell you why.
When I represented this great city in Congress, we had a
baseball team, some of you might remember. They were called the
"Colt 45's. Ever since the Colt 45's were here in Houston, I
admit, I've been a sucker for the underdog.
Being behind in politics brings with it a certain freedom.
The other guy can do what the pols want, the other side can pay
attention to what the polls demand -- I'm just going to roll up
my sleeves -- and do what's right for America. //"
Down the road not far from here, is a big building they call
the eighth wonder of the world. Well, Houston, get ready for
wonder number nine -- the most stirring political comeback since
back when Harry Truman gave 'em hell. //
It all starts right here, right now. The Gaitlin Brothers
like to sing that, "Houston means I'm one day closer to you. "
No offense to Larry and the rest of the Gaitlin Brothers,
but if this Houston -- it means we are one big day closer to
victory. One day closer to building a better and brighter future
for America.
Barbara and I want to thank you all for coming out here.
God bless Houston, and God bless the United States of America.
