KENTUCKY HARVEST ANNIVERSARY 1 LOUISVILLE, KY
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1992
THANK YOU STAN (CURTIS). THANK YOU ALSO TO DALE
OWENS. AND LET ME CONGRATULATE MAGGIE LAWSON ON HER
BEAUTIFUL RENDITION OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM.
BARBARA AND I ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY WEEKEND.
FOUR STATES, SEVEN STOPS -- IN JUST THREE DAYS.
BUT WE COULDN'T RESIST YOUR INVITATION -- TO STOP
BY AND SEE THE REDBIRDS./
- 2 -
As YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A GRUELING CAMPAIGN AHEAD --
FULL OF LONG DAYS AND LONG HOURS. IN FACT, THE ONLY
ONE WITH A TOUGHER SCHEDULE THIS FALL -- IS HOWARD
SCHNELLENBERGER AND THE U OF L CARDINALS./
I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THIS BEAUTIFUL DAY WITH TALK
OF POLITICS. So LET ME JUST SAY THAT THE AMERICAN
PEOPLE WILL HAVE TWO VISIONS BEFORE THEM THIS FALL.
- 3 -
ONE SEES A SOLUTION TO EVERY PROBLEM IN
GOVERNMENT -- AND BELIEVES EVERY PATH LEADS TO
WASHINGTON D.C.
I OFFER A DIFFERENT VISION. A BELIEF THAT
AMERICA'S HEART BEATS LOUDEST IN PLACES LIKE LUBBOCK,
LINCOLN -- AND RIGHT HERE IN LOUISVILLE./ /
AMERICA FACES BIG CHALLENGES IN THE NEW ECONOMIC
AGE -- AS WE TRY TO BUILD A NATION STRONG AND SECURE.
- 4 -
YES, GOVERNMENT HAS A ROLE IN SOLVING THESE CHALLENGES.
BUT ULTIMATELY -- THE GENIUS OF AMERICA IS NOT TUCKED
AWAY IN SOME MARBLE BUILDING ALONG THE PoToMac -- IT
LIES IN THE FERTILE MINDS AND COMPASSIONATE HEARTS OF
PEOPLE LIKE YOU -- YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBORS. //
I CAME HERE TODAY TO SALUTE THOSE WHO KEEP THE
BRIGHT LIGHT OF AMERICA ALIVE -- THE VOLUNTEERS OF
KENTUCKY HARVEST. //
- 5 -
SOME SEE HUNGER IN AMERICA AND ASK -- "WHY?" You
SEE HUNGRY PEOPLE AND SAY -- "WHY NOT FEED THEM?"
FOR ALL OF YOU WHO SPEND YOUR SATURDAY MORNINGS OR
YOUR WEEKDAY NIGHTS LUGGING CHICKEN OUT OF THE LOCAL
RESTAURANT -- OR DRIVING OVER TO THE NEAREST FOOD
BANK -- YOU ARE PROVING THAT AMERICA IS -- TRULY --A
NATION OF NEIGHBORS -- A NATION FILLED WITH POINTS OF
LIGHT.
- 6 -
I'M ESPECIALLY GLAD THAT ALL THE FOOD DONATED TODAY

THE RELIEF PROCESS CONTINUES IN FLORIDA AND
LOUISIANA. HOMES MAY BE DESTROYED, BUT BELIEVE ME --
THE AMERICAN SPIRIT IS ALIVE AND KICKING.
THIS WEDNESDAY, THE RED CROSS RECEIVED THE MOST
DONATIONS IN ONE DAY -- IN THEIR HISTORY.

AND I SPEAK FOR ALL WHO STOOD IN ANDREW'S PATH -- WHEN
I SAY THANKS TO ALL AMERICANS -- FOR THIS TREMENDOUS

On Sunday, September 6, 1992, at approximately 12:50 pm you will
speak at the Annual Kentucky Harvest at Red Bird Stadium in

Draft
Thank you Stan (Curtis)
Barbara and I are in the middle of a busy weekend.
Four
states, seven stops -- in just three days.
But we couldn't resist your invitation -- to stop by and see
the Redbirds. //
As you know, we have a grueling campaign ahead -- full of
long days and long hours. In fact, the only one with a tougher
schedule this fall -- is Howard Schnellenberger and the U of L
Cardinals. //
I don't want to spoil this beautiful day with talk of
politics. So let me just say that the American people will have
two visions before them this fall.
One sees a solution to every problem in government -- and
believes every path leads to Washington D.C.
I offer a different vision. A belief that America's heart
beats loudest in places like Lubbock, Lincoln -- and right here
in Louisville. //
America faces big challenges in the new economic age -- as
we try to build a nation strong and secure.
2
Our goal is simple and straightforward: In the 21st
Century, America must not only be a military superpower, but an
economic superpower -- an export superpower. //
And on this Labor Day weekend, let me tell you why I know
America will win: Because the American worker can out-think,
out-compete and out-produce any worker in the world -- anytime,
anyplace, anywhere. //
Yes, Government has a role in solving these challenges. But
ultimately -- the genius of America is not tucked away in some
marble building along the Potomac -- it lies in the fertile minds
and compassionate hearts of people like you -- you and your
neighbors. //
I came here today to salute those who keep the bright light
of America alive -- the volunteers of Kentucky Harvest. //
Some see hunger in America and ask -- "why?" You see hungry
people and say -- "why not feed them?"
For all of you who spend your Saturday mornings lugging
chicken out of the local restaurant -- or driving over to the
nearest food bank -- you are proving that America is -- truly --
a nation of neighbors -- a nation filled with Points of Light.
I'm especially glad that all the food donated today -- will
go to the survivors of Hurricane Andrew.
The relief process continues in Florida and Louisiana.
Homes may be destroyed, but believe me -- the American spirit is
alive and kicking.
3
This Wednesday, the Red Cross received the most donations in
one day -- in their history. And I speak for all who stood in
Andrew's path -- when I say thanks to all Americans -- for this
tremendous outpouring of support and generosity. //
I tried to convince Barbara to pull her old glove out of the
closet, but she insisted that I throw out the first pitch
instead.
My only advice goes to those sitting behind the backstop.
Keep your hands in front of your face!
Thank you for inviting us. Happy Birthday Kentucky Harvest.
May God Bless the most generous nation on earth -- the United
States of America.

Some see hunger in America and ask -- "why?" You see hungry
people and say -- "why not feed them?"
For all of you who spend your Saturday mornings lugging

Homes may be destroyed, but believe me -- the American spirit is

This Wednesday, the Red Cross received the most donations in
one day -- in their history. And I speak for all who stood in
Andrew's path -- when I say thanks to all Americans -- for this
tremendous outpouring of support and generosity. //
I tried to convince Barbara to pull her old glove out of the

As you know, we have a grueling campaign ahead -- full of
long days and long hours. In fact, the only one with a tougher

I don't want to spoil this beautiful day with talk of

two visions before them this fall.
One sees a solution to every problem in government -- and
believes every path leads to Washington D.C.
I offer a different vision. A belief that America's heart
beats loudest in places like Lubbock, Lincoln -- and right here
in Louisville. 11
