HAASS, APPROVED St. Louis Missouri By BEN. Scowcroft. - -DMcG 945A.M. Thank you. I am honored and delighted to be here at McDonnell Douglas - - a world leader in technology and innovation. I'm glad to be here in person -- to make an important announcement. I have decided to notify Congress, to sell up to 72 of your F-15's to the country of Saudi Arabia. 11 I know that the strength of this corporation extends far beyond the steel you forge into planes and weapons. McDonnell Douglas is a pillar of this great community, you have always given back, and been a good neighbor. I also am aware that the past few years have been difficult for this company, as Americans have adjusted to the reality of a new, more peaceful world. I know that many of you have been anxious about what the future will bring -- and especially the status of the F-15. You were undoubtedly hoping we would reach a decision earlier. I have been sensitive to the impact of this contract on your production line, and your jobs. In these tough times, I want to keep every American at work. But as Commander in Chief, I have a responsibility for national security as well. I had to consider the implications for military I stability in the Middle East, preserving Israel's qualitative edge, the peace-making process, and I the needs of Saudi Arabia I have worked on this issue legitimate defense and our ability to work closely with SAUDI ARABIA, AS WE DID IN OPERATION DESERT STORM AND AS WE ARE Now DOING IN OPERATION SOUTHERN WATCH. 2 personally, touching every base, and I am now satisfied that we have adequately addressed each of these concerns and we can make the sale. In addition to the F-15, McDonnell Douglas produces one of 18 the most versatile combat aircraft -- the F/A strike fighter. We are not only procuring additional F-15's, we are embarking on a program with McDonnell Douglas, to develop an improved version of this plane -- the F-18 E/F. I want to make clear -- I support full funding for the F-18 E/F. The military technology that you produce, is the finest in the entire world. It is a tribute to American skill and innovation. It is the same skill and innovation that we must now use to win the global economic competition. For those who have any doubts, I would say only -- look at the talent that is assembled here today. The American worker can still accomplish great things. Thank you McDonell Douglas. It is a pleasure and an honor to be here. # # # A's FROM Presidential Remarks F-15 Announcement R.
