PRESIDENTIAL RADIO ADDRESS: THE DEBATES
TO BE TAPED FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9
8:50 A.M.
I want to take these next few minutes to talk to you about
one of the key events in this election season. Tomorrow night in
St. Louis, the three candidates for President meet for the first
of three debates.
Presidential debates are one part pageant -- one part
pressure cooker -- but always, history. In the words of Abraham
Lincoln, every election is -- quote -- "a people's contest," and
the debates are one more way for the American people to make up
their minds.
Tomorrow night, I'm going to use my time to talk about our
new world, and America's place in it. About all we've done these
past four years to make America safer, more secure -- to banish
for our kids and grandkids that terrible nuclear nightmare that's
hung over our heads for nearly half a century.
I'm proud of America's leading role in Desert Storm -- proud
that we led the way in the great victory for Democracy and the
defeat of imperial communism. But now that America is at peace -
- now that we're not at war, hot or cold -- I've made it my
mission to see that we seize the new opportunities -- match the
peace in the world with peace of mind here at home.
I've set a goal -- to make America, by the early years of
the next Century, the world's first $10 trillion dollar economy.
And I've got the agenda to help us get there. My Agenda for
American Renewal -- will help us meet and master the challenges
of the 21st Century. I'm going to take my case to the people --
tell them what I'll be fighting for the next four years:
I'll be fighting for free trade -- open markets around the
world that mean new American jobs right here at home.
For a revolution in American education -- giving parents the
power to choose their children's schools, public, private or
religious.
For initiatives to jump-start small business -- the engine
of the American economy that generates two out of every three new
American jobs.
I'll be fighting for economic security for all Americans:
Affordable health care. Pensions you can count on. Job training
to prepare you for the challenges of a 21st century economy.
I'll fight for an America where no one is left behind --
because in this country, we don't owe anyone a living, but we do
owe everyone an opportunity.
Finally, I'll be fighting to tame government spending /
tackle the deficit / and lighten the tax load for hard-working
Americans. Because government is too big and it spends too much.
That's my agenda -- my agenda for American Renewal.
Tomorrow, I ask you to watch closely -- take full advantage
of the chance to hear the candidates who ask for your trust go
head to head. To see where the other guy -- or as the case may
be this year, the other other guy -- is coming from. To see what
we're made of -- and where we want to take this country.
And when all is said and done -- and I say this with all due
respect to the pundits in the press and the TV talking heads --
"the people shall judge."
When it comes down to it, I put my trust in the people. In
the people waiting at the airport in a driving rain early one
workday morning in Greensboro, North Carolina. In the families -
- the Moms, Dads and kids -- that stood out along the railroad
tracks from Bowling Green, Ohio to Livonia, Michigan. These are
people yearning for change / ready to build on what's good about
America -- and make it better.
There is no change I can think of -- no challenge we face -
- that is bigger than America's heart or brighter than our
dreams. /
America is ready -- and so am I. /
I hope every American will tune in tomorrow night. It may
be tough for the candidates -- but it's going to be good for the
country. //
Today I want to thank you for listening -- and may God bless
the United States of America.
