My friends in the press corps want to know who won the debate. You're a group of impartial observers -- what do you think? You know, sometimes out there it seemed like a tag-team rhetorical wrestling match. But that's okay. I don't mind taking on two opponents -- it almost makes it an even fight. Governor Clinton's voice is getting a little hoarse -- because he's spending so much time talking about what's wrong with me -- and what's wrong with America. But I'm just getting warmed up -- to tell America what we must do -- to keep America number one! This election involves a clear choice -- in ideas, experience, and character. This year, the average taxpayer will work until the 5th of May, to satisfy Uncle Sam's appetite. Governor Clinton thinks you should work more days for the tax man -- I say government is too big -- and spends too much of your money. // Governor Clinton proposes a tax and spend program that would make Michael Dukakis blush. He's calls his program change -- and he's right. Because by the time he's through -- change is all you will have left in your pocket. / / Can you imagine putting Governor Clinton in cahoots with the big spenders in Congress? That would be like letting George Foreman loose in a Doritos factory. I say -- we need to get a handle on spending -- and cut your taxes. // Governor Clinton wants to change American education -- just a little bit. I want to reinvent American education. We want to give every parent -- the right to decide where your kids should go to school. PHONE NUMBER Steve Provest REMARKS: * Peggy Howard's home phone # is / she said that if it is important she will be home after 7:00 pm. - October 15, 1992 Steve, don't know if you saw the Braves game last night, but it's in serious contention (according even to Boswell in the Post) for being the most stunning comeback in baseball history. Bottom of the ninth, Braves shut out, two men out. The bench is for all practical purposes completely spent. Bobby Cox in desperation goes to the only remaining guy, an unknown named Cabrero, who came up from the TRIPLE-A BRAVES IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA a couple of weeks ago, and sends him to the plate. Down by two. Two outs. Two swings, two misses. One strike away from the end of the season. No momentum. Braves were flat all night. And somehow, this Cabrero no one outside of Richmond has ever heard of before does what Gant, Justice, Pendleton, Blauser, and all the rest couldn't do all night long. He lines a sharp single to left field, drives in Justice from third, and on his heels comes the slowest man in baseball, Sid Bream, former Pirate and veteran of five knee operations. Bream runs the fastest 90 feet in his life, racing against Barry Bonds' throw to the plate from deep left, and beats it by about an inch. The Pirates are stunned. The stadium is stunned. Hell, the Braves are stunned. And most of all, Sid Bream is stunned. He just lays there on the ground (stunned), and then suddenly the entire team roars out of the dugout and piles on him while he's still down on the ground, and then the whole city of Atlanta explodes. It's midnight. Everybody in town goes out to their cars, drives into town, pops champagne and a has a horn-blasting party all night long. I have this on good and bleary authority. Anyway. Cabrero the unknown from Richmond saves the day. Boswell has to go all the way back to 1951, to Bobby Thompson's Shot Heard 'Round The World to find a worthy comparison. And by the way, Curt agrees it was one of the finest moments in baseball history, but I think he just wants to borrow some money. All this to say, here's the line. It'll work anywhere in the South because the Braves are the South as far as baseball's concerned. But nowhere will it work better than in Richmond, Virginia, and no time better than tonight, where everyone in the audience knows and loves Cabrero and all saw him pull off a miracle at midnight last night. Potus needs to coin this line. The immortal new Bush rallying cry, the perfectly apt metaphor for Potus' bottom-of-the-ninth Casey-at-the-bat political situation, and one to replace the classic "It ain't over till the fat lady sings" -- "It ain't over till Cabrero swings. We're gonna win this thing. I didn't believe it last night. Now I do. -- Ken the giddy Braves fan SENT BY:Xerox Telecopier 7020 10-15-92 ; 12:24 ; The White House- 2024566218:# 1 OK ulchayer Document No. 356545ss WHITE HOUSE STAFFING MEMORANDUM 32 OCT 15 P12: 40 DATE: 10/15/92 ACTION/CONCURRENCE/COMMENT DUE BY: TODAY, 10/15 ASAP!!
