MEMORANDUM FOR STEVE PROVOST
DAN MCGROARTY
RAY SILLER
CHRISTINA MARTIN
STEVE PROVOST
FROM:
CAROL AARHUS
SUBJECT:
STRONGSVILLE, OHIO LOCAL COLOR
All About Strongsville: Strongsville is a town of 36,000,
approximately a half-hour south of downtown Cleveland. It is
made up of a lot of small businesses. Unemployment is below the
national average. The median income is $45-50,000. Housing
starts have been good. The town celebrated its 175th anniversary
last year. Strongsville bills itself as the "Crossroads of the
Nation". There is a Ford plant about 5 miles away, so there is a
strong union presence in the area. There are also a lot of
Reagan democrats.
Program Notes: Governor Voinovich will introduce Bruce Willis
and Bruce Willis will intro POTUS. The Oak Ridge Boys and Miss
Ohio (Robin Meade) will sing a few tunes in the pre-program show,
and there will be five high school bands playing the honors -- we
should, however say hello to the Strongsville High School
Marching Mustangs.
Interesting Oak Ridge Boys Song Titles:
The Long Haul
Something Worth Holding Onto
Lucky Moon
Acknowledgements:
Governor Voinovich; Bruce Willis; Mike DeWine (not there, but
running for Senate) ; Mayor Wally Ernfelt.
Acknowledgements Notes: The Mayor would like POTUS to call for a
Republican majority in the Ohio state legislature. There are
also four Congressional seats tied to Cuyahoga County up for
grabs. The Republicans running for those seats are: Margaret
Mueller, Bob Gardner, Martin Hoke, and Beryl (rhymes with pearl)
Rothschild. They may or may not be at this event (probably not),
but the mayor asked that we mention them anyway.
Ohio quote: "There is no flashiness, nothing fleeting, in Ohio's
approach to life. Traveling across its fertile acres, one feels
in the very atmosphere a combination of stability and progress.' "
-- Pearl Buck, America, 1971
Volunteersim note: Last year, the Strongsville Optimist Club was
named the #1 Optimist Club by Optimist International. They do
education and literacy projects with the youth in the community.
We should mention them when we talk about volunteers solving
problems, not the government.
