NATIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST
WASHINGTON HILTON HOTEL
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1989
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. MY SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR
HONORED GUESTS FROM THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY AND FROM
FOREIGN LANDS. IT IS A PLEASURE TO BE HERE ONCE AGAIN.
THERE IS NO GREATER PEACE THAN THAT WHICH COMES FROM
PRAYER, AND NO GREATER FELLOWSHIP THAN TO JOIN IN PRAYER
WITH OTHERS. COMING TO THE PRAYER BREAKFAST IS LIKE
COMING HOME.
2
LET US ALL THANK THE LORD FOR HAVING GRANTED
US THIS DAY AND MAKING IT POSSIBLE FOR US To SPEND THIS
TIME TOGETHER.
BILLY GRAHAM TELLS ME THAT WHEN HE WAS A BOY LIVING
ON THE FARM IN NORTH CAROLINA, ONE OF HIS JOBS WAS MILKING
THE COWS. ONE DAY HE WAS SENT OUT TO MILK ONE OF THEIR
COWS NAMED BRINDLE -- A COW HE HAD NEVER MILKED BEFORE.
AND HE WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A GENTLE COW AND WOULD BE VERY
COOPERATIVE.
3
WHEN BILLY SAT DOWN ON THE STOOL TO MILK THE cow, SHE
SWITCHED HER TAIL, SLAPPED HIM IN THE FACE AND NEARLY PUT
HIS EYE OUT. THEN A FEW MINUTES LATER SHE KICKED THE MILK
BUCKET ACROSS THE BARN AND THEN TRIED TO KICK HIM. AT
THAT POINT, HE BEGAN TO WONDER IF THE PERSON WHO DESCRIBED
THIS KIND AND GENTLE COW HAD EVER SAT DOWN NEXT TO HER IN
THE BARN.
I'VE THOUGHT OF THAT STORY IN LIGHT OF MY REQUEST FOR
AMERICA TO BECOME A "KINDER AND GENTLER NATION."
4
IT'S ONE THING TO REQUEST IT AND ANOTHER THING TO ACTUALLY
SEE IT HAPPEN. MAYBE A LOT OF FOLKS ARE OUT THERE
THINKING, "WELL, IF YOU PEOPLE IN WASHINGTON WILL STOP
TRYING TO MILK US, WE'LL STOP KICKING."
WE'RE FACING SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS AND SOME GREAT
OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR COUNTRY RIGHT NOW. AND I BELIEVE
THAT A WONDERFUL RESOURCE IN DEALING WITH THEM IS PRAYER.
NOT JUST PRAYER FOR WHAT WE WANT, BUT PRAYER FOR WHAT IS
IN THE HEART OF GOD FOR US INDIVIDUALLY AND AS A NATION.
5
AND SHOULDN'T WE ALSO REMEMBER, WITH ALL THAT WE HAVE TO
BE GRATEFUL FOR, TO PAUSE EACH DAY TO OFFER A PRAYER OF
THANKSGIVING?
ALL OF US SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO FULFILL THE
RESPONSIBILITIES WE NOW HAVE WITHOUT PRAYER AND A STRONG
FAITH IN GOD. ABRAHAM LINCOLN SAID, AND I QUOTE, "I HAVE
BEEN DRIVEN MANY TIMES TO MY KNEES BY THE OVERWHELMING
CONVICTION THAT I HAVE NOWHERE ELSE TO GO." HE WAS NOT
THE FIRST PRESIDENT TO REALIZE THAT, AND HE CERTAINLY WILL
NOT BE THE LAST.
6
BUT IT'S NOT JUST PRESIDENTS. I HEARD ABOUT A LITTLE
BOY WHOSE ELDERLY GRANDMOTHER CAME TO LIVE WITH THEM FOR
THE WINTER. THE FIRST DAY, THE LITTLE BOY PLAYED HARD
INSIDE THE HOUSE AND WANTED TO TURN THE HEAT DOWN, BUT
GRANDMOTHER INSISTED ON KEEPING IT HIGH. WHEN HE OPENED
THE WINDOWS, SHE CLOSED THEM. FOR SEVERAL DAYS IT WENT ON
LIKE THIS, UP AND DOWN, BACK AND FORTH, WITH THE LITTLE
BOY TOO HOT AND THE GRANDMOTHER TOO COLD.
7
AFTER ABOUT A WEEK, THE LITTLE BOY KNELT BESIDE HIS
BED ONE NIGHT AND PRAYED: "LORD, BLESS MOTHER AND DADDY,
AND MAKE IT HOT FOR GRANDMOTHER."
I SUPPOSE THERE MAY BE SOME PEOPLE IN WASHINGTON AND
AROUND THE COUNTRY WHO HAVE ALREADY BEGUN TO PRAY, "MAKE
IT HOT FOR GEORGE." I'M SURE THOSE PRAYERS WILL BE
ANSWERED OVER TIME, AS WELL.
BUT I CAN ALSO TELL YOU FROM MY HEART THAT I FREELY
ACKNOWLEDGE MY NEED TO HEAR AND HEED THE VOICE OF ALMIGHTY
GOD.
8
I BEGAN MY INAUGURAL ADDRESS WITH PRAYER OUT OF A
DEEP SENSE OF NEED AND DESIRE FOR GOD'S WISDOM IN THE
DECISIONS WE FACE. IF WE ARE TO WALK TOGETHER TOWARD A
MORE CARING, MORE GENEROUS AMERICA, LET US ALL SHARE IN
PAVING THE WAY WITH PRAYER. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU
ALL.

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: NATIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST
WASHINGTON HILTON HOTEL
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1989
Thank you very much. My special thanks to our honored
guests from throughout the country and from foreign lands. It is
a pleasure to be here once again.
There is no greater peace than that which comes from prayer,
and no greater fellowship than to join in prayer with others.
Coming to the Prayer Breakfast is like coming home. Let us all
thank the Lord for having granted us this day and making it
possible for us to spend this time together.
Billy Graham tells me that when he was a boy living on the
farm in North Carolina, one of his jobs was milking the COWS.
One day he was sent out to milk one of their COWS named Brindle
-- a COW he had never milked before. And he was told that it was
a gentle COW and would be very cooperative.
When Billy sat down on the stool to milk the COW, she
switched her tail, slapped him in the face and nearly put his eye
out. Then a few minutes later she kicked the milk bucket across
the barn and then tried to kick him. At that point, he began to
wonder if the person who described this kind and gentle COW had
ever sat down next to her in the barn.
I've thought of that story in light of my request for
America to become a "kinder and gentler Nation." It's one thing
to request it and another thing to actually see it happen. Maybe
a lot of folks are out there thinking, "Well, if you people in
Washington will stop trying to milk us, we'll stop kicking."
- 2 -
We're facing some serious problems and some great
opportunities in our country right now. And I believe that a
wonderful resource in dealing with them is prayer. Not just
prayer for what we want, but prayer for what is in the heart of
God for us individually and as a Nation. And shouldn't we also
remember, with all that we have to be grateful for, to pause each
day to offer a prayer of Thanksgiving?
All of us should not attempt to fulfill the responsibilities
we now have without prayer and a strong faith in God. Abraham
Lincoln said, and I quote, "I have been driven many times to my
knees by the overwhelming conviction that I have nowhere else to
go." He was not the first President to realize that, and he
certainly will not be the last.
But it's not just Presidents. I heard about a little boy
whose elderly grandmother came to live with them for the winter.
The first day, the little boy played hard inside the house and
wanted to turn the heat down, but Grandmother insisted on keeping
it high. When he opened the windows, she closed them. For
several days it went on like this, up and down, back and forth,
with the little boy too hot and the grandmother too cold.
After about a week, the little boy knelt beside his bed one
night and prayed: "Lord, bless Mother and Daddy, and make it hot
for Grandmother."
I suppose there may be some people in Washington and around
the country who have already begun to pray, "Make it hot for
George." I'm sure those prayers will be answered over time, as
well.
- 3 -
But I can also tell you from my heart that I freely
acknowledge my need to hear and heed the voice of Almighty God.
I began my Inaugural address with prayer out of a deep sense
of need and desire for God's wisdom in the decisions we face. If
we are to walk together toward a more caring, more generous
America, let us all share in paving the way with prayer. Thank
you and God bless you all.

MEMORANDUM FOR CHRISS WINSTON
FROM:
ROGER B. PORTER
RBP
SUBJECT:
Presidential Remarks: National Prayer Breakfast
This draft is positive and should go down well with those
attending the National Prayer Breakfast.
One suggestion, which I have discussed with Dave Demarest,
might help strengthen the positive message in the story on
pages one and two regarding milking the COW. Rather than
ending the story with a plea for the government in Washington
to get off people's backs, he might end the story as follows:
"I've thought of that story in light of my request for
our Nation to become a "kinder and gentler America." It's one
thing to request it and another thing to actually see it happen.
Those of you who have labored long and hard in the trenches of
serving others know that we often have to persist and reach
out again and again. It is that kind of commitment that we
need to create a kinder and gentler Nation.
"I always like to remember that there is no exercise
better for the human heart than reaching down and lifting
someone else up."
If you have any questions, or I can help in any other
way, please let me know.

NATIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST 1989
Billy Graham tells me that when he was a boy living on the
farm in North Carolina, one of his jobs was milking the COWS.
One day he was sent out to milk one of their cows named Brindle -
a COW he had never milked before. And he was told that it was a
gentle COW and would be very cooperative.
When Billy sat down on the stool to milk the cow, she
switched her tail, slapped him in the face and nearly put his eye
out. Then a few minutes later she kicked the milk bucket across
the barn and then tried to kick him.
At that point, he began to wonder if the person who
described this kind and gentle COW had ever sat down next to her
in the barn.
I've thought of that story in light of my request for our
nation to become a "kinder and gentler America." It's one thing
to request it and another thing to actually see it happen. Maybe
a lot of folks are out there thinking, "Well, if you people in
Washington will stop trying to milk us, we'll stop kicking."
We're facing some tremendous problems and opportunities in
our country right now. And I believe our greatest resource in
dealing with them is prayer. Not just prayer for what we want,
but prayer for what is on the heart of God for us individually
and as a nation.
- quote persons Providers "time Due up ruces"
I heard about a little boy whose elderly grandmother came to
live with them for the winter. The first day, the little boy
played hard inside the house and wanted to turn the heat down,
but Grandmother insisted on keeping it high. When he raised the
windows, she closed them. For several days it went on like this,
up and down, back and forth, with the little boy too hot and the
grandmother too cold.
After about a week, the little boy knelt beside his bed one
night and prayed: "Lord, bless Mother and Daddy, and make it hot
for Grandmother.' (Based on a story in ""Stories Bellamy Tells,"
by Dr. Guy Bellamy, All Men's Press, Oklahoma City, no copyright
date.)
I suppose there may be some people in Washington and around
the country who have already begun to pray, "Make it hot for
George,"
Those prayers are already being answered over time well. as
will be answered
I'm sure those
But I can also tell you from my heart that I freely
acknowledge my need to hear and heed the voice of Almighty God
I began my inaugural address with prayer out of a deep sense of
need and desire for God's wisdom in the decisions we face. +
feel that need more each day.
If we are to walk together toward a kinder and gentler
America, let us all share in paving the way with prayer.
