MAY 3, 1990 Dr. Nary 7:20 P.M. Thank you, Don [Senator Nickles]. [Introductory acknowledgements.] It's a thrill to see so many of the great sports stars here tonight -- heroes all of America admires. // resenting Baseball great Bob Feller --- Rapid Robert -- who 50 years ago baseboll. before this spring threw the first and only Opening Day no hitter. // Tony Trabert -- King of Wimbledon's Center Court. // Then there spach are our home-town Redskins -- past and present -- and even a few Cowboys, brave enough to venture up here into the heart of Redskin Country. // Welcome, one and all. And let me say how pleased I am to have all of you on our Republican team. // lavagos I'm pleased to see [Cabinet Members]. And of course, let me recognize the many members of the Senate Republican team -- the Gramm seasoned veterans -- here tonight: Chairman Don Nickles [our Kaoten Majority Leader Bob Dole, and all the rest. And our candidates - - the many aspiring Washington Senators -- a solid line-up, top Tanke to bottom. // Thurmand I know I speak for all of them when I thank you -- the Wamer members of the National Republican Senatorial Committee Inner Circle -- for your strong support. // Politics is a team sport -- and your key contributions are going to help make 1990 a winning Senate season. // It's early May. The political season is heating up -- we're 7 months away from that first Tuesday in November. // Spring training is over -- we've touched all the bases back home -- and now everyone in this room is ready for the campaign season to go full swing. [[I'm ready. I've been building up my strength -- by benchpressing a copy of the Federal Budget. ]] // You know, a great American mystic -- // Yogi Berra -- once said: "Good hitting beats good pitching. And vice versa. // Well, in the game of politics, you can't win if you can't connect -- and our opponents can't connect with the American voter. Because more and more voters have figured out that when the Democrats go into their wind-up -- you'd better be ready for a curve. // The American people want something different. They want straight-talk -- and a straight-forward agenda for America -- strong, steady, and ready to face the challenges of a new century. They want the Republican agenda -- government in tune with the American people. // And that's the agenda we're working to put into action. // You know I'm committed -- heart and soul -- to the fight against crime and drugs. To Clean Air and a new environmental ethic. To a strong economy -- one that provides growth, good jobs, and opportunity for all Americans. And, of course, to the first duty of every President and Commander in Chief: to preserve America's place -- America's peace and freedom -- in a changing world. But you all know I can't push through my policies all by myself. I need help on the Hill -- the kind of help I get from all 45 of our fine Republican Senators. Now, the only thing better than having 45 Senators on your side // is 50 plus 1. // 5 more Senate seats -- that's all that stands between us and a Republican majority. All that prevents the Republican Party from taking back the Senate. // I hope you're optimistic -- because I am. We occupy the high ground. // We share the values of mainstream America -- now it's time we became the majority party in America. And we can start this fall, by shutting out the Democrats -- and taking back the Senate. // But we won't get it handed to us. It's going to take a real 110% effort for the Republican Party. All the support we've come to rely on from those of you in this room. // With your help, we're going to make 1990 a winning season -- and we'll make the 1990s a Republican Decade. // It's been my pleasure to join you tonight. Once again, my thanks -- and God bless you all. // And now, it my pleasure to officially open this new political season, by throwing out the first ball. [[ Senator Nickles, get ready for some smoke. ]] # # # REPUBLICAN SENATE COMM. TEXT: AS WE SETTLE IN TO ENJOY ALL THE FESTIVITIES SURROUNDING OUR TEAM '90, IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT WE ARE CONTINUING A TEN YEAR TRADITION OF WORKING TOGETHER TOWARD OUR SHARED GOAL -- A REPUBLICAN SENATE MAJORITY. IT'S A VERY ATTAINABLE GOAL. WE'VE PROVED THAT IN 1980, 1982 AND 1984, AND WE'RE GOING TO PROVE IT AGAIN IN 1990! IN FACT, THIS YEAR WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO ONE OF OUR GREATEST WINS SINCE THE INNER CIRCLE WAS FOUNDED IN 1979. THAT YEAR, SENATOR JOHN HEINZ RECRUITED A GROUP OF CONCERNED AMERICANS TO FUND A SPECIAL CAMPAIGN TO PUT REPUBLICANS IN CONTROL OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 26 YEARS. AIDED BY VOTERS DISILLUSIONED WITH JIMMY CARTER AND HIS FELLOW CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS, THE INNER CIRCLE HELPED CAPTURE 12 DEMOCRAT SENATE SEATS IN 1980. THAT VICTORY NOT ONLY PROVIDED A SAFE GOP MAJORITY, BUT IT SWEPT OUT OF OFFICE SOME OF THE MOST LIBERAL SENATE DEMOCRATS. UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF SENATOR BOB PACKWOOD IN 1982, THE INNER CIRCLE GATHERED A NEW STRENGTH AND HELPED ELECT AN ADDITIONAL REPUBLICAN SENATOR. THEN IN 1984, SENATOR DICK LUGAR OVERSAW A PERFECT GOP WIN. THE INNER CIRCLE HELPED RONALD REAGAN WIN A LANDSLIDE RE-ELECTION WHILE ALSO HOLDING ONTO THE REPUBLICAN MAJORITY THAT WAS SUCH AN REPUBLICAN SENATE COMM.
