Video Message
by President George Bush
to the
Little League International Congress
April 11, 1992
Boston, Massachusetts
Good evening It is indeed a great pleasure for me to greet each and
every one of you, and to convey my sincere best wishes for success as you
commence the 19th Little League International Congress.
Since you last came together three years ago, much has transpired to
change the face of the world as we knew it in 1989. Freedom and democracy
have flowered across the globe, and today people everywhere are learning
what Little League has always known: That character, courage, and loyalty to
the principles we hold dear can make it possible for the human spirit to
triumph over adversity, and over oppression.
Each time you assemble, you renew your commitment 10 those
principles; you rekindle the spirit of democratic participation that has made
Little League Baseball a worldwide movement, and you ensure that future
generations of the world's children will know the joy, feel the love, and learn
the lessons that make Little League Baseball not just a game, but a way of life.
In 1989, Little League Baseball celebrated its 50th anniversary, and it
was my, and Barbara's, pleasure to help you celebrate with a party on the
South Lawn. Since that time, another 27 countries have added their names to
the international ranks of Little Leaguel -- It makes me wonder if Dr.
Creighton Hale isn't moonlighting for the State Department - It may be
unofficial, but he's certainly a U.S. Ambassador of good will.

In 1989, Dr. Hale and I traveled together to Poland -- the country that
started the dominoes of democracy tumbling across Eastern Europe -- and
chartered the first four Polish Little League programs. Then there was
Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia, and all the rest -- right up to 1992 when the
new democratic republic of Nicaragua dedicated the Dodgers Little League
Friendship Field in Managua. That's the one that really got me.
You know, it seems like only yesterday when I was a Little League
coach. Barbara would pack all the kids into the car and we'd drive off to
practice to try to get good enough to win one for the home town.
Today, the home towns are still there, all across America. But Little
League Baseball is winning one for all the world.
Thank you for preserving protecting and promoting all that is best in
America through Little League Baseball.
Barbara joins me in sending our very best. God bless you, and good
night.
