Provost FROM: Gary J. Gershowitz Office of Communications SUBJECT: LOCAL COLOR: GRAND BLANC A) SCHOOLS INFO: The Grand Blanc High School Band will be playing at the event. The school name is the "BOB CATS" and the band is called the Bob Cat Marching Band. Also performing at the event from the high school will be a choral group called the "TREBLETONES", the Boys Barber Shop Quartet, and the Pom Pom Squad - The high school's Pom Pom Squad was National Champion a few years ago. The Grand Blanc High School football team's record so far this year is 3-1 -- they have a game tonight (9/25) against Kersley High School will try to get you the score Saturday morning, but Kersley is favored. Grand Blanc High School has a very good girls swimming team -- they are currently undefeated and ranked 5th in the state -- many team members will be at the event. The Montrose High School Band will also be performing at the event. Also, Davison High School Band MIGHT be performing as well, but as of now advance does not have confirmation. The Grand Blanc High School is very proud of their academic achievements they have more National Merit Semifinalists than any other school in the area and won the Big Nine Math-Science Competition. Grand Blanc is known as a community that families move to because of their excellent school system. The school motto is "A TRADITION of EXCELLENCE." Grand Blanc High School has a very active volunteer program, called the Grand Blanc High School Youth Volunteer Program, with 70% of the students participating in various community projects. B) GOOD BUSINESS STORY: Bob Zuehlke was laid off from General Motors three years ago and he and his wife Paula started an auto body repair shop with the help of an SBA guaranteed loan. The name of his repair shop is Impact Auto Collision and it is located within a block of where the train will stop -- to stage right. The business has six employees -- three laid off from GM -- one is a Desert Storm Vet. Gross sales of $500,000. Bob feels that the business climate has been good for him and that the American Dream is still alive. He gives much credit for his start up to SBA guaranteeing his loan. Greg Neuffer resigned from EDS Division of GM five years ago to start Bit By Bit Computing as a sole Proprietorship -- his business has been growing at a rate of 50% per year. It is a computer supply and consulting company. Neuffer markets Everex Computers which are American made in Fremont, California. Everex Computers have a high percentage of American made components. He has six employees and relies on the education of his employees as a key to his success -- his marketing relies on word of mouth and the reputation he has developed for superior service to his clients. NOTE: THE BUSINESS IS LOCATED IN GRAND BLANC BUT NOT NEAR THE TRAIN STATION C) VACATION SPOTS: Many Grand Blanc residents go on vacation further north in Michigan, as there are lots of lakes and woods. (This is, of course, true of Southern Michigan residents in general and not unique to Grand Blanc. ADVANCE IS STILL WORKING ON SOME MORE LOCAL COLOR, BUT AS OF NOW HAVE NOT COME UP WITH ANYTHING ELSE -- WHAT YOU HAVE IS CONSIDERED KEY FACTS.
