FROM:
J. BUNTON Job
SUBJECT:
DES MOINES, IOWA // Some more COLOR
EVENTS AT THE CONVENTION CENTER:
The afternoon of POTUS visit to the Des Moines Convention Center
there will be a Microsoft Computer Expo -- on Wednesday [10/28] 9
or 10 downtown Des Moines auto dealers will host the 1992 New Car
preview [they actually re-arranged their schedule so POTUS could
use the convention center] // Hilary Clinton spoke at the
convention center on the 16th and !!!!!! the Star Trek Convention
will be held there on November 8th! Previously -- the convention
center as been the site of Psychic Fairs!
GOV. BRANSTAD ANECDOTE:
Gov. Branstad, driving from an event to his office heard Rush
Limbaugh's show last week -- Rush said he was going to endorse
Clinton for President -- when listeners called in protest Rush
denied saying it -- as callers continued to air their
disappointment in him, Rush then waffled. -- Rush began saying
things like -- that was 23 minutes ago -- that is in my past --
that doesn't matter I was young then this goes to my
character anyhow the Gov. heard this and was distraught -- he
commanded an assistant give him her radio -- he then caught on,
but like all of America he was caught in Rush's on air gag.
Read attached letter sent to Gov. Branstad about POTUS. POTUS
may want to respond to her personally -- by phone or in comment
during Q & A.

Dear Governor Branstad,
I apologize for taking this long time to thank you immensely for attend-
ing our Grand Opening of Imelda's Mexican Restaurant. This event was
a major success thanks to you. I'll forever be thankful to you. You
have proven to me once more that dreams come true. I was greatly
impressed by your simple, down-to-earth personality, and the same goes
for the people who attended the event and other citizens who heard about
your visit here. I have only heard extremely good things said about
you. You have won and deserve our family votes. I am 8 registered
Democrat but I have never voted for the party, I vote for the candidate
I agree most with, and this time my family and I like you as a person.
Our restaurant has been wonderfully successful thus far, and I think
part of it has been due to your visit. People have been curious about
the place. Your presence here contributed to some people giving us
the opportunity to visit us the first time. I am also happy to inform
you that our clientele is frequent visitors now. I do also understand
that after your visit, we were the subject of our local talk show which
I heard lasted two hours instead of the normal 1 hour. I believe there
were pros and cons - good publicity for us - I loved it.
Thank YOU again from the bottom of my heart, Governor Branstad.

Dear Charles and Dan,
Thank you for writing. I am always glad to hear from our nation's young
is people and I am happy to help you with your book. My favorite funny story
a personal one that really happened to me.
When I was first elected Governor in 1982, one of my goals was to boost
tourism in Iowa. I decided a good way to do that was to take a series of mini-
vacations with my family. One of the first mini-vacations we took was on a
very hot, sticky August day to a place called Seminole Valley Farms where
people were doing all kinds of interesting things like spinning yarn and other
crafts. The television news people were there covering my family's visit and
highly of the vacation and tourism opportunities right here in Iowa and how
they asked me about the events at the farm. I was enthusiastic and spoke
in front of my son, Eric, who was eight years old at that time, and asked him
much fun it is to visit places like this. Then the reporter put the microphone
what he thought. He said, "Tm hot and bored."

Dear Editor,
As Governor of Iowa, I would like to relate a story about an extremely upstanding state
employee in response to your request for such stories in the Lifestyle section of the Des
Moines Register on Sunday, March 29.
On January 27 of this year, a man named Bernard Cooper attended an Underground
Storage Tank meeting on the fourth floor of the Wallace State Office Building. While he
was there, Mr. Cooper's wallet apparently fell out of his pocket. When he reached his
home in Marion, two hours later at 4:50 p.m., Mr. Cooper discovered his wallet was
missing. He immediately called the Wallace Building, but it was closed.
The next morning, Mr. Cooper traveled back to Des Moines and waited for the Wallace
Building to open. When the building opened, he entered and went straight to the fourth
floor to try to recover his wallet. Dottie Perkins and Alice Johnson helped him search the
building for his wallet. With no success, they called security and discovered a custodial
worker named Dwight Monroe had indeed turned the wallet in the day before.
What makes Mr. Monroe's action even more admirable is the fact that the wallet contained
$3,500 in cash. The honesty and integrity displayed by Dwight Monroe demonstrate the
real character of the people of this state.
The very day of this incident, Mr. Cooper wrote me a letter praising Mr. Monroe's actions
and his character, a copy of which I have enclosed. Accordingly, we recognized Dwight
Monroe at the Employee of the Month luncheon in February. Mr. Monroe truly deserves
respect and recognition for his honorable example.

Dear Governor Branstad:
In all of your activities and busy schedule trying to put the
budget in line, I just wanted to share with you a fantastic
experience that I had with some of your people this morning.
Yesterday while attending an Underground Storage Tank meeting held
in the Wallace State Office building in the DNR board room, I
inadvertently lost my billfold out of my pocket onto the floor.
Leaving that meeting at about 2:50 and arriving back at my home
around 4:50, I discovered that I lost my wallet. I made numerous
calls including to the Capital Police and was unable to make any
contact with anyone because that building closes at 4:30 and
everyone was gone.
After spending a sleepless night, I left my home very early this
morning and arrived at the Wallace office building before 7:00 am.
At approximately 7:10 I noticed a lady enter the building so I
knew it was unlocked. At that time I entered and went to the
fourth floor being greeted by a very nice lady by the name of
Dottie Perkins at which time she looked .in the safe and several
other places to try to determine if in fact my wallet had been
found. She then introduced me to an Alice Johnson who in turn
looked several places she thought it might be and in fact we went
into the board room determining that it was gone.
At that time, she called security finding out that security did -
have the wallet turned in by Mr. Dwight Monroe, one of your
janitors. Mrs. Johnson then took me to the security department on
the third floor to be greeted by a highway patrol officer and an
officer of the capital police department as well as Mr. Monroe.
After their discussion and determination of what was in the wallet
and etc., they turned it over to me.

I then expressed my extreme thanks and appreciation to Mr. Monroe
for his honesty and integrity while returning my wallet to
security. What you need to know was that in addition to personal
items, there was over $3,500.00 cash in this wallet. This man
could have in fact made off with it and have thrown the wallet
away.
I can not tell you how much I appreciate the honesty and integrity
of your people and the kindness they expressed to me in a short
time this morning. This was certainly a very heart-warming
experience to know that we have people in this country with this
type of attitude. That shows me that deep down in, we do have
truly fine people here in Iowa.
I am sure that in your busy schedule, there are many days when you
have people condemn you for every thing you do, but with the kind
of staff you have, it is obvious to me that your success's are
only beginning and that you will reach new heights.
My hat is off to you and your staff and I want you to know how

Dear Mr. and Mrs. McCan,
I received your recent letter expressing appreciation for the kindness you

story. It reinforces what I have always known is true about the people of
Iowa - they are our most valuable resource.
Iowans are known worldwide as friendly, helpful, and outgoing people. In
fact, in this month's issue of Midwest Living magazine, people all over the
Midwest judged Iowa to be the most friendly state in the region. I'm pleased
that you found this to be the case. I'm very proud of Iowa because the quality
of people here make it a wonderful place to visit and live.
I was sorry to hear of the trouble you encountered. with your car and Mr.

that you made it home safely and hope that you will visit Iowa again soon.
Thank you for writing.

Because of people like you Iowans are known worldwide as friendly, helpful,
and outgoing people. In fact, in this month's issue of Midwest Living
magazine, people all over the Midwest judged Iowa to be the most friendly
state in the region.
Thank you for being the type of person who will take the time to help others
in need. It really is appreciated.
Sincerely,

Dear Governor Branstad:
1 am enclosing copies of two letters of appreciation referencing the caring and sharing
the people of lowa represent.
We had several occasions throughout our trip in the miclwest this past September to
require various measures of HELP. We want to let you, the Governor, know that the
people of lowa have a tremendous presence of warmth and caring toward their
fellowmen.
My husband has expressed this feeling about the people of lowa referencing his period
of time in naval duty and taking courses at lowa State during World War II. This trip
refreshed his memories and thoughts of the wonderful hospitality the people of lowa
display.
You have a state to be proud of as we are sure you share and declare.
Sincerely,

Gentlemen & Ladies:
My husband and 1 would like to give special commendations to Ms. Kelly Skeffington
and Mr. Timothy Flutor who worked for the Fuller Standard Station in Adel, lowa.
These two individuals showed a most caring and sharing attitude during our automobile
crisis of dealing with bad tires on our trip to the midwest in September 1991. It was
a Sunday morning, September 22, and our rubber began to peel off on the highway.
We were directed to this Standard station in Adel. We received the most excellent
service from these people.
Tim gave us his undivided attention for our problems. He needed someone to watch
the office/cashier area while he worked on our car. Kelly gave up an appointment she
planned to attend and watched the store so to speak while Tim took care of our
automobile.
The station was exceeding busy that day and we were due in Sioux Center, lowa that
afternoon. With their courtesies and businesslike approach we were able to keep our
engagement.
My husband was on oxygen and unable to handle any problems. These two
individuals gave us a complete sense of security. We are most grateful and extend our
thanks at this time to Kelly and Tim.
Sincerely,

A recent poll by the Des Moines Sunday Register suggests
that Iowa voters are concerned about Clinton's trustworthiness.
Among the three candidates, 35% say Bush is the candidate who can

IOWA COLOR:
The movie "Field of Dreams" was filmed in Dyersville, Iowa -

movie -- "Is this Heaven -- no it's Iowa" -- a sign will be
hanging at event playing on that slogan to read: "Is this Heaven

Pres. Ronald Reagan is the only President to live in Iowa as

Governor Terry Branstad is one of the most senior governors
in the nation. He's only in his mid-forties. Came into office as a
conservative -- fiscally and culturally. He cut business taxes
in his first term and taxes remained a favorable issue for him in
86 and 90. [In 1982 he was opposed by Democrat Roxanne Conlin -
-who legally avoided paying state taxes -- her name should sound
familiar -- she's president of the Trial Lawyer's Association. ]
Sen. Grassley seems to always be saying "Aw shucks" -- just
a simple Iowa farmer. Grassley was one of two Senate Republicans
voted against resolution to allow POTUS to use military force in
the Gulf. // He was the only Repub. on Senate Budget Committee to
vote for the Dems. 1990 budget resolution.

PRESIDENT BUSH AND THE HAWKEYE STATE
Bill Clinton wants to raise your taxes and decide how to spend your money.
Clinton has never held a job outside the political realm, never managed a
Business, never had to meet a payroll, and has never been burdened by
frivolous government regulations. Maybe this is why he just does not
understand that people do not want more government and more taxes. President
Bush, on the other hand, thinks that the government is too big and it spends
too much. As a former businessman, George Bush has met a payroll and dealt
ith the burden of government regulations. President Bush has a plan to
evive the economy by getting the government off the backs of hardworking
Americans; he will cut taxes to create new jobs and slash government spending
to reduce the deficit.
Bill Clinton will have to raise taxes on individuals with taxable
incomes starting at $36,600 a year to raise his $150 billion. Bill
Clinton would impose the largest tax increase in American history at
least $150 billion. He savs he would only tax the rich, but don't be
fooled; in order to get the $150 billion, he will have to raise taxes on
the middle class - individuals with taxable incomes starting at $36,600
a year.
But, there's more Clinton has hundreds of billions of dollars more in
promises that he has not funded; Guess where he will get the money to
fund them? $150 billion is only Clinton's advertised amount of new
revenue. Clinton has also made hundreds of billions of dollars worth of
unfunded promises. To generate revenue to cover just a portion of these
promises, Clinton would have to start his tax increase with taxable
incomes as low as $20,100.
Clinton would have to impose a 7-9 percent payroll tax to pay for his
costly government-run health insurance scheme. Clinton admitted in USA
Today that his plan would require a payroll tax. Clinton's plan could
cost 700,000 jobs in the near term and would put at risk up to 97,000
jobs in Iowa alone. The National Federation of Independent Businesses
says the eventual job loss would total between one and two million jobs.
In firms that could meet the cost of Clinton mandates, the average
worker's take-home pay could be cut by $1,700 per year. In addition,
Clinton's mandated job training program would impose vet another payroll
tax of 1.5 percent.
Clinton and Gore favor a drastic plan to impose a punishing carbon tax
on U.S. businesses and households in order to stabilize emissions of
carbon dioxide. According to the CONSAD Research Corporation, their
plan would cost 600,000 jobs and threaten up to 13,000 jobs in Iowa
alone. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that a carbon tax
would cost the U.S. economy $100 billion per year, which translates into
almost $1,100 per household. And two members of the Illinois Commerce
Commission have released a study indicating that household utility
energy bills in Iowa would increase an average of over $500 per year.

President Bush Supports Ethanol: President Bush recently granted a one-
pound waiver to make ethanol more competitive, reduce smog-causing
emissions, and provide cleaner air. The waiver will apply to all
reformulated gasoline blended with ethanol in up to 30 percent of the
total reformulated gasoline market in northern cities. The President's
action will help America's farmers while cleaning the nation's air.
After Clinton flip-flopped on ethanol (as a candidate, Clinton
pledged his support for ethanol, but in 1985 he removed Arkansas'
major tax incentive for the use of ethanol), Clinton's Midwest
political director told reporters on September 16th that Clinton
has been unable to decide whether ethanol deserves a waiver.
"Governor Clinton will not take a position in the controversy
"
(UPI, 9/16/92).
President Bush is stimulating investment and creating new jobs.
President Bush wants Iowa's workers to have the means to invest in their
own future. President Bush's Agenda for American Renewal will create
jobs and generate new growth. New incentives include: a $5,000 tax
credit for first-time homebuyers, an increase in the personal exemption,
a cut in the capital gains tax, flexible IRAS, and an Investment Tax
Allowance. The President's homebuyers credit would create 272,500 new
jobs and $12.5 billion worth of residential construction.
President Bush is maintaining a strong defense. Clinton would slash
America's defense by nearly $60 billion more than the President's
prudent defense reductions. Clinton's defense cuts will also put as
many as one million Americans out of work and will cost 7,600 Iowa
defense related jobs.
The President's North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Will Help
Iowa: The President had the vision to conceive a NAFTA with Canada and
Mexico. In 1991, the total of Iowa's exports to Mexico and Canada was
$851 million, and Iowa's exports to Mexico have grown 64 percent since
1987. Clinton has been characteristically slick on NAFTA. Before he
decided to endorse the NAFTA, he applauded Dick Gephardt, NAFTA's
leading Congressional critic and called for NAFTA's renegotiation. What
Clinton doesn't mention is that his concerns have been more than
satisfied by President Bush.
Fighting for America: President Bush has actively promoted the
interests of the agricultural community in international trade talks;
whether it be working to reduce the unfair agricultural subsidies on
oilseeds in Europe, pursuing bilateral initiatives to expand markets in
the Far East, or arranging for a NAFTA. As a result, agricultural
exports are up, topping $37 billion in 1991 and expected to reach $41
billion this year.
George Bush, A True Businessman: As a former entrepreneur, George Bush
understands the difficulties faced by small business owners. The
President's economic growth plan will help small businesses invest in
productivity by cutting the capital gains tax and creating an investment
tax allowance. Bill Clinton lacks any type of business experience
because he never created a business and never had to meet a payroll.
Maybe this is why two-thirds of those who will be hit by Clinton's
higher income taxes will be small businesses, the source of most new
jobs in Iowa and throughout the nation.

Clinton Camp attacks Bush over ethanol waiver
If Bill Clinton wins the presidency, then he would "revisit"
President Bush's new ethanol waiver giving a huge new handout to
ADM lobby (OW 10/5), says top Clinton energy aids.
New Bush handout forces dirty-air cities to accept ethanol blends
in 1995 even though gaschol causes worse pollution.
oil refiners would have to cut their gasoline RVP even more in
those dirty cities in order to compensate for ethanol's pollution.
In the process, consumers would pay roughly another half-cent per
gallon for gas, refiner costs would soar by some $30 million, and
the ADM lobby would pocket hundreds of millions more of taxpayer
ethanol subsidies.
In order to carry out the Bush order, the EPA has begun to rewrite
the rule.
An EPA source says rewrite process would take at least until
February, but by that time a President-elect Clinton could very
well have named a new EPA chief and possibly have axed the Bush
order.
Ethanol giant ADM has contributed several million dollars to Bush
and his key Republican and Democratic corn-state, pro-ethanol
congressional allies in recent months.
New Bush waiver also boosts the current 54 cents/gal. federal
subsidy for ethanol to as much as 64 cents/gal. for new
gasoline/ETBE blends derived from ethanol - that's more than
wholesale gasoline costs. Average PAD 1 rack gasoline was 62
cents/gal. last week.
According to Bill Burton, Clinton's chief energy policy director,
Clinton camp sees the Bush ethanol waiver order as a blatant
giveaway to buy the votes of the corn growers in defiance of an
earlier negotiated reformed gasoline deal.
The so-called "Reg-Neg" agreement, signed by oil, environmental,
consumer and ethanol groups is now being trashed for the sake of a
few farm votes, Burton says. Original agreement contained no such
waiver for ethanol in nation's dirtiest-air cities.
In the process, Bush has turned his back on both the oil industry
and environmentalists, Burton says.
Bush has "written off his friends in the oil and gas industry,"
Burton says, with a gasohol giveaway "taken out of the hide of
refiners with no consideration" to their costs.
While Gov. Clinton is also "pro-ethanol," he would try to get all
aides to compromise on "reformulated gasoline," not "do this in
back rooms," Burton said. -- Jack Peckham

Bush To Visit Iowa Next Week
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) President Bush will make his first 1992
campaign visit to Iowa next week, two days after rival Bill Clinton
makes his third campaign stop in the state.
Republican officials said details of the Bush visit have not
been set. They said Bush would arrive Monday night and stay
overnight in Des Moines, then attend a campaign event early
Tuesday. GOP officials and an official at the president's Iowa
campaign headquarters had no further information on the visit.
The president's stop comes on the heels of another visit by
Clinton. The Democratic nominee will address a labor union crowd at
the state fairgrounds at noon Saturday and will then address a
rally open to the public at the fairgrounds at 12:30 p.m.

State GOP Executive Director Arrested on Drug, Assault Charges
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Will Lynch, executive director of the
Iowa Republican Party, was arrested on cocaine and assault charges
Friday, police said.
Des Moines Police Sgt. Ray Rexroat said Lynch was charged with
assault, 4th-degree criminal mischief and possession of cocaine
after an early morning fight at a Des Moines residence. Rexroat
said he didn't know how much cocaine was seized.
Rexroat said the fight occurred about 2:30 a.m. when Kally Naimi
was returning home with another person. Lynch was there when she
arrived at her home, Rexroat said.
'`He (Lynch) assaulted Naimi, struck her, causing bruises and a
cut lip, Rexroat said. Rexroat said Lynch then took an object and
broke the windshield of a car driven by her companion, Derek
Oglesby.
Rexroat said police were called but Lynch had left. They were
again called to the residence about 8 a.m. Friday and found Lynch
fighting with two men.
Lynch was arrested, charged and released after posting $1,430
bond, Rexroat said.
Iowa Republican Chairman Richard Schwarm said he was still
seeking information about the incident.
''Apparently he was picked up by police, that's all I know for
certain, Schwarm said.
Lynch has been the political architect of the Republican Party's
efforts this year to seize control of the Legislature, helping
select and recruit candidates and map tactics.
Republican legislative staffers Friday were working the phones,
notifying candidates of the arrest.
Lynch has long been a fixture in the conservative wing of the
Republican Party. Prior to taking the party job, Lynch was a
staffer on the presidential campaign of Housing Secretary Jack Kemp
in 1987 and 1988.

Trial Lawyers 'Keep Bush Honest, Conlin Says
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The head of the Trial Lawyer Association
said it's no wonder George Bush hates attorneys so.
'We're a burr under his saddle, said Roxanne Conlin, a Des
Moines attorney and president of the 60,000-member national group.
'`He has eviscerated federal agencies whose duties are to protect
us, so we're the last bastion to protect consumers and victims.
''It's the trial lawyers who protect people from defective
products and unsafe medical practices and violation of individual
rights, she said Wednesday.
''We are it. If he can destroy us, there's nothing left.
Bush devoted nearly a third of his Labor Day campaign kickoff
speech to what he called ''our crazy, out-of-control legal
system. During his acceptance speech at the Republican National
Convention, Bush said Bill Clinton is supported by ''every trial
lawyer who ever wore a tasseled loafer.
Conlin said she does not have any tasseled loafers. "I wear
high heeled pumps. I don't look all that grand in tasseled
loafers, she said.
Conlin said she at first thought Bush was simply misinformed.
"But the malice with which he approaches the issue is hard to
ignore, she said.
Conlin said lawyers are used to being whipping boys for
society's ills. ''It's a daily feature in our lives. We're used to
it.
"But what is bothersome, well, more than bothersome, what we
cannot abide is the attack on the jury system, the attack on our
clients, the attack on injured people.
'We're the messenger. We're the ones who deliver the message to
corporate America that they will be held accountable for unsafe
products, she said.
She said Bush and Vice President Dan Quayle, who also regularly
attacks lawyers, have muzzled federal regulators.
'`Look at ATVs, for God's sake. The Consumer Protection Agency
backed away from rule-making on ATVs. (All terrain vehicles) are
truly an unbelievably bad device, she said.
"I can give you a zillion examples. How about the National
Highway Safety Transportation Board that is supposed to protect us
from exploding gas tanks? The Kentucky crash, did you know that not
one of those people died in the crash, but by a fire caused by a
gas tank in the wrong place, which has now been changed because of
litigation?"
Conlin, once an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for governor,
referred to the nation's worst bus crash, the May 14, 1988, crash
of a pickup truck and a 1977 church bus that killed 27 people near
Carrolltown, Ky. Forty others escaped, but many were badly burned.
One of the defendants was Ford Motor Co., which made the bus
chassis.
"The government just says, 'Oh.'
''They're no longer supposed to protect us. They're captives of
the industry they're supposed to regulate, she said.
''How about toy safety? We've been down on our knees, 'Please
warn parents of the danger. You see a toy that says it's
appropriate for ages 2 to 5. You might say, 'Well, my bright
2-year-old could use this toy that's appropriate for 3-year-olds.
' What you don't know is that the age is not determined on how
smart the child is, but it's how big the parts are. It's the
choking hazard. So far the response (from regulators) is absolute
silence, she said.
has not grown faster than population.
Every study done by unbiased folk shows that juries are not
out of control and that awards are related to the severity of the
injury, she said.
Has the system gone wrong? No, she said.
Still, Conlin agreed that lawyers are often held in low esteem.
'We have an educational task ahead of us; it will be a focus of my
own efforts as president, she said.

Big-Name Republicans Hope to Tie Bush to Grassley
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Two big-name Republicans on Tuesday
sought to hitch President Bush's fortunes in Iowa to Republican
U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, who holds a big lead in his race.
'`He (Grassley) is probably the most popular incumbent running
for re-election anywhere in America this year, said Texas Sen.
Phil Gramm. Chuck's strength gives us a fighting chance to carry
Iowa in the race for president.
Gramm and actor Charlton Heston swung through the state to raise
money for Republicans.
Bush has trailed badly in the state, but Gramm said a strong
Grassley showing could help the president. Grassley is seeking a
third six-year term in the Senate and has a big lead over Democrat
Jean Lloyd-Jones.
''We believe he (Grassley) is the strongest Republican on the
ballot, Gramm said. He said that strength could '`pull the
president over the top in Iowa.
At the same time, Ms. Lloyd-Jones accused Grassley of taking the
election for granted by ducking campaign debates.
''He has time to come to Iowa to meet with a movie star, but he
doesn't have time to debate the issues before the voters, Ms.
Lloyd-Jones said in a statement that staffers distributed at the
GOP news conference.
''That's a sure sign that he's been in office too long and
that he's taking the voters and the election for granted, Ms.
Lloyd-Jones said. The two have yet to meet in a one-on-one debate
and are not scheduled to do so until the day before the election.
Heston said his part in the swing was largely to attract
attention because of his celebrity status.
"I don't think celebrity endorsements are very valuable,'
Heston said.

Bush Closes in on Clinton
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)
President Bush has narrowed Bill
Clinton's lead in Iowa to 6 percentage points, according to the
Iowa Poll.
The copyright poll by the Des Moines Sunday Register shows
Clinton now leads by 44 percent to 38 percent. That means the race
is a statistical dead heat because the difference is within the
poll's margin of error.
The poll also shows Ross Perot getting 8 percent and 10 percent
saying they're not sure.
In the previous poll, taken in early September before Perot
re-entered the race, Clinton had a 55 percent to 36 percent lead.
When Perot's name was added to the mix in that poll, Clinton got 44
percent, Bush 32 percent and Perot 19 percent.
The latest poll was taken in the six days ending Friday, a
period when Bush used television commercials to hammer at Clinton's
draft record. According to the poll, most likely voters are not
concerned about Clinton's anti-war sentiment during the Vietnam War
era or the draft controversy.
Eleven percent say they are troubled ''a lot'' by Clinton's
draft record, while 78 percent say they are not concerned at all.
But Iowa voters are concerned about Clinton's trustworthiness.
Among the three candidates, 35 percent say Bush is the candidate
who can be trusted the most to tell the truth. Twenty-eight percent
identify Clinton as the most trustworthy and 14 percent say Perot
is least likely to lie.
But Clinton gets good marks for domestic policy. Forty-six
percent identified Clinton when asked, Who is best able to bring
about changes the country needs?'' Twenty-eight percent said Bush,
15 percent Perot and the rest not sure.
Poll results are based on interviews with 823 Iowans over age 17
who said they were likely to vote. The poll has a margin of error
of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Bush Campaign Staffers Assault Media
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) President Bush's deputy campaign manager
Friday attacked the media but conceded that relentless bad news in
the polls is making it tough to keep supporters going.
"It is an uphill climb, said Clayton Yeutter. "It is
difficult to keep our own supporters motivated.'
Yeutter and Energy Secretary James Watkins stopped in Iowa to
criticize Democrat Bill Clinton's ethanol policies but were
questioned about Clinton's persistent double-digit lead in the
polls.
"The national media seems to have declared this election over
with Clinton winning, Yeutter said. ' 'We hope the national media
gets a huge embarrassment on Nov. 3."
Since the presidential debates concluded, polls have show
Clinton holding and in some cases increasing his lead. That
creates a problem for Bush because the campaign is entering its
hectic closing days when the campaign is trying to build
enthusiasm.
''It is a difficult challenge, particularly with the national
media using every opportunity to support Governor Clinton and bash
President Bush, said Yeutter, a former Agriculture Secretary and
Chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Yeutter attacked ''media pressure that we believe is
irresponsible and totally without objectivity.'
Those charges echo attacks that Bush is launching daily on the
campaign trail. They came at a news conference on the eve of
Clinton's third campaign stop in the state, and a few days before
Bush makes his first.
Polls have shown Bush trailing in Iowa, but by less than he does
elsewhere in the country.
'`The Clinton lead in Iowa is narrowing, " Yeutter said. ''We
believe Iowa is a state the president can win.
