He believes in what america stands for, and what she means to other countries around the world who are threatened by rethless tyrants. and he knows all too well what the cost of our actions could extract from many americans he lost a brother in Vietnar But that only strengthens his resolve to perform his duty to his country, his family, to the fullest capacity to ensure that the lives of american soldiers are not needlessly wasted on the battlefield. He has always said his job is to safeguard seace, not to make war. yet, he is prepared and willing to give his life proudly to ensure that his children, and the children of freedom loving people around the world, car live in a world free of tyranny. I would like to Tell you how deeply grateful I am that you are his commander in chief. I have such confidence in you. I believe you sincerely care about our country, and the principles for which she stands. and I know you care about the Mer and women in the armed services who are risking their lives for all of us here at home. When I think about our past presidents, I can only say that if a crisis such as this has to envolve the U.S. (as it surely does!), I just thank God that its hoppening when you are president I am inspired by your clear thinking, direct marrer, and firm stance. you seem to be unshakable. The press, as usual, seeks to be trying to stir up negative public opion over your "vacation", and I'd like to tell then how many of us feel about that. We are glad you are trying to find some time to relax and enjoy yourself to allevate some of the stress and tensions you are under 24 hours of every day. a person who cannot relieve stress cannot make decisions. So, Mr. President, if you can find even a tiny Measure of tranquility on the golf course at down, or on Lidelity fishing, or sitting at the breakfast table with a cup of coffee - we applaud your efforts, because we know that will enhance your ability to make clear and rational decisions concerning the lives of so many. It was a tough question. What do you tell an eight-year-old and two five- year-olds about the conflict in the Middle East, half a world away? How do you explain to them that their Daddy is protecting the interests of his country and helping to ensure that other nations are safe from invasion? How do you tell them that while he is doing this he is, perhaps, in danger? Perhaps, even more important, and more relevant to small boys, is how to explain to them that Daddy, who was coming home around Labor Day, after several months absence, will undoubtedly be late. "Do you think they'll start shooting, Mom?" Her voice had that "tell me it's not so" tone she used to use on the way to the doctor. "Mommie will I have to have a shot?" I reviewed my philosophy (never lie to your children). "Yes, dear. It will hurt a little, but we'll hold hands and, after a bit the hurt will go away." "Tell them the truth, as gently as you can," I said. "They will figure it out anyway and their fears, unspoken, will be far worse than reality. Besides, better to know Daddy is not home because he is doing an important job that requires brave men, than they wonder if Daddy's mad at them." "Truth is, honey," I said, "nobody knows what will be tomorrow, but we must plan for the worst, and hope and pray for the best." "I love you Mom,' - "I love you too dear, and the boys, and Chuck." I hung up the phone, and thought "They also serve who only stand and wait." ra sts P1 KeLLY 703 MAXWELL DR. Westalewing P-51A August 19, 1990 Dear President Bush, I am the wife of a proud American Flying Man, currently deployed somewhere in the Middle East. As anxious as I am for my husband health and well-being, I want you to know that I appreciate your methodical approach to world diplomacy and trust you unequivocally to make the right decision. The intense media coverage of the crisis has brought the complex situation in the Middle East back into the public eye. Conflicts do not happen over night. This situation has been brewing since World War II and the formation of Israel. Rather than focusing exclusively on Iraq and the crisis of the moment, we should turn our attention to the long standing disputes in the region. If we get at the root of the problem, Saddam Hussein will have nothing to exploit for his flimsy propaganda. If we are going to deploy our military might at a moment's notice, then we should not shy away from solving international disputes before they reach the flash point. We have worked hard to foster friendships with several Arab countries. Now is the time for dialogue with both moderate Arab nations and with Israel in order to come to a negotiated settlement, not of Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, but of the nearly fifty years of Middle Eastern tension. I'm not suggesting that we abandon Israel. It seems to me though, that de-fusing the powder keg would be the friendliest thing we could do for the Israeli's in the long run. I understand that they need the Occupied West Bank as a buffer zone. I also understand that the situation will never be peaceful until the Palestinians have a homeland. Creating a Palestinian State in those contested areas, with the insistence that it be maintained as a de- militarized zone, would serve both interests. There are other problems as well, including the disputes over holy cities such as Jerusalem and Mecca. As difficult as it would be, the best solution would be to create city states, such as the Vatican, SO that these cities belong to no one nation. Jerusalem's sovereignty would be particularly difficult to arrange, since several major religions claim it. Nonetheless, a special international government separate from it's several religious sects, would lend stability to the entire region. Finally there is the tremendous disparity of wealth in the region and the continuing appearance that we are a rich nation, protecting our affluence by supporting the wealthy oil sheiks. As an oil producing nation ourselves, we should join OPEC and help support the price of oil by keeping a lid on supply. We and the rest of the world need such incentives to conserve oil and to explore alternate more environmentally sound sources of energy. I know that these ideas sound radical and may be unacceptable for reasons beyond my knowledge. I also understand that we don't want to give the appearance of capitulating to aggression. You are the first president in a long time capable of solving the problems still plaguing our world fifty years after Hitler turned Europe into a war zone. Five years ago when we were stationed in Germany and visited the Berlin Wall, we never could have imagined that 1990 would find two Germany's reconciled. Now I truly believe that anything is possible. Thank you for your conviction, your competence, and your courage. You are in my prayers. Perhaps it will with the help of General Powell or someone else in your administration. I was inspired to write the poem when my brother and my brother-in-law were sent to Bahrain recently from George A.F.B., California. Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: You are doing a superb job handling the difficulties in the Middle East. You have the full support of the Dowd family for your efforts, including your opportunity to vacation at Kennebunkport. We have a young man who is part of the 4th Marine Amphibious Brigade on the way to Saudi Arabia. We are very proud of him and he told me that he was ready to serve his country and to do whatever it took if he was called upon to fight. Two of my brothers and I served in the Marines during the Vietnam war. We lost one brother on March 1, 1967. I made a promise to my wife, at that time, that if any one of my children ever had to go to war for his country, that I would do everything possible to make sure that he fought pursuant to a Declaration of War by the Congress of the United States. If in your wisdom it is necessary to go to war in the Middle East, then I respectfully request that you seek a Declaration of War from the Congress. In my experience, this country seems to live with itself, even during difficult times, when we follow the procedures and mandates of the Constitution. I am confident that the Congress will follow your recommendation in this regard. You will have our support if you seek such a Declaration. Thank you for your time and attention. Box 167, CC942 Jeddah, Saudi Arabia President of the United States Washington DC USA Sir, I have been an expatriate worker living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the past ten years. With that background I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the immediate, swift, strong, action which was taken against the Iraqis. If any military action has ever been justified, this is it, for the issues are vast. I hope it will be possible to make clear to the American people just how valuable an action you have taken. Sincerely, Fred Kuzz 100 P-51A you in Iraq September 11, 1990 Lammerding Assoceights Joseph E. Steven M. Patricia A. John F. President George Bush Mary C. Jerome C. THE WHITE HOUSE Claire M. Christine N. Washington, D. C. Dear President Bush, I am writing to you on behalf of my son, Joe, the oldest of our eight children who celebrated his 34th birthday last month in Kuwait City. The last report concerning our son was communicated to me by an evacuee who arrived home on Monday. She reported that Joe was hiding with her husband in Kuwait City waiting for emancipation. This lady indicated that the greatest concern of the Americans in Kuwait was the hopelessness and frustration experienced when Western forces did not immediately react against the invaders. During the past four weeks, the evacuee and her family have observed the wanton destruction of Kuwait City and the barbaric treatment of Kuwaiti citizens. Our son, while being protected by a Kuwaiti family, listened to the execution of a neighboring Kuwaiti for harboring a Westerner. His hosts informed Joe that he was welcome to remain with them but that they would be grateful if he would seek a new hiding place. Our son was fortunate in being able to immediately relocate to his present "safe house". The perseverance of Kuwait's citizens in protecting and providing sustenance to Americans confirms my son's comments over the past five years that the Kuwaitis are indeed our friends. While we are very much concerned about our son's welfare, we are also troubled by the suffering being endured by the Kuwaiti people in our citizens' behalf. I speak for my wife and our seven children in America when I say that we all appreciate what you are doing and we wish you to know that, even at the peril of our son, Joe, we favor affirmative action to provide relief and remove the Iraqi menace. We are afraid that the longer the wait, the more pain, suffering and devastation will be imposed upon the innocent. We encourage you to authorize an immediate military response to the invasion and bring an early end to this tragedy. Sincerely, Edward hammong L. Many times, I'm sure, there are letters written from wives who have a complaint of some sort. Most of us have positive attitudes, know and accept that it is our husband's job to serve the Marine Corps where every they need to go. We are very grateful for the organization of the FACTeam support that is in operation in our area. We thought you and Mrs. Bush would like to see a sample of the types of 'Updates' that are being sent to the wives on a monthly basis, in this area. That's all, no complaints, we love America and are proud to be a wife of a Marine. I pray for the decisions you must make daily and am truly thankful you have taken that responsibility. Dear Mr. President: I have never written nor seriously considered writing to the Commander in Chief, but I can no longer help myself. I doubt whether you will ever hear of this letter, yet, I am still concerned as I will freely express my opinion and hopes. For a number of years now I have gotten very frustrated that this country is expected to help out whoever holds out their hand, even though our country itself is in financial trouble. We can not be expected to police and pay for the whole world's troubles. We do, however have an obligation to help our friends in need. I am angry that I have not heard on the news, (realizing that we will only hear what we should) that certain other wealthy countries, such as Japan and various European Nations, have not pledged precise and sufficient amounts of money to almost totally offset the cost of the Middle East conflict. Also, why are their young men and women not at the front lines in equal numbers, considering size of country? Is it that our boys blood is cheaper to spend and can flow more freely? I pray this will not be another Vietnam where the soldiers were looked at as if they were the enemy. My older son, who is the first really educated of the Beck families, is now in the Middle East. He is a Captain and Medical Doctor in the Air Force. He is obviously my love and hope for our future. I am convinced that he will do his best in whatever situation he will be placed. I pray that if all avenues of negotiations have been exhausted, and war must break out, you, as our President and Commander in Chief will make the decision to go for the kill at the outset. To even think that we would consider a prolonged fight in the desert and have SO many of our young soldiers killed would be unforgivable. If war does start, I, at age 53, if need be, would consider joining the forces, providing I would be allowed to join the front lines. I love this country more than most American born, and I do my part by working very hard, and in not living above my means. Here in Southern California it's life as usual. The poeple keep on driving towards San Diego, etc. etc., as if whoever uses the most gasoline will win a big prize. What does it take for the public to wake up? I wonder While I am writing I would also like to say that if we ever hope to balance the budget, and a substantial tax increase is needed, so be it. There is no Santa Claus. When the going gets tough the tough tighten their belt. May I close by saving that I pray that you Mr. President will find the answers and act in the best interest of the peoples everywhere. May God bless you. Sincerely Heinz Beck kik P-51A Support / Son Dhahran Aug. 24, 1990 Dear President Bush I really feel the need to write and let YOU Know how supportive our family is of YOU and the was YOU have been handling the situati on in the Middle East, We have on 18 Year old son who OS Q member of the 82nd Air Borne is now in Dhahran. SHARIFI Sunday August 26, 1990 The Honorable George Bush, President of the United States White House Washington, D.C. 20380-0111 My dear President Bush and Mrs. Bush: I am enclosing a letter that I have just written to our local newspapers, radio and TV stations. I thought while I am writing letters I would write to you and your wonderful wife to say how proud you have made me as an American, wife and mother. Sure I'm concerned about the gulf crisis but I want you to know that as a Mother of a Marine I'm behind you and your decision 100%. My son's name is Hossein Ali Sharifi and he is one proud American and Marine just as my oldest son, Rostam was. I love my children with all my heart and Hossein's decision to be a Marine, like his brother, was one of the proudest moments of my life. Someone has to defend our wonderful country. I have been in the middle east several times and my husband and I both applaud your stand against Irac. There is no doubt in my mind that this sadistic monster would not continue to take over any country to get his own selfish means. He doesn't care about his army, people or country. I know your a very busy man with alot on your mind, I just wanted you to know that we're trying our best, with few results, to assist you in -our small way. To Mrs. Bush I would like to say that she is my idea of a First Lady, gracious, beautiful and a wonderful Mother and Grandmother. We love you and pray for you both and your family. Last and not least, please know that if my dear son is lost, I will handle it with pride and dignity as I know my country's first and best lady would do. SHARIFI Sunday August 26, 1990 Dear Sir: Last Thursday, as I sat watching the gulf crisis on TV, I decided to finally get involved. So I did what I thought was the correct channel to take. I called the mayor in my city, San Bruno where I live. I ask him if we would declare a proclamation to request that each family fly our flag. I also told him of my huge collection of American memoribilia in my place of business. He told me he had a meeting but that he would get back to me the next morning and suggested that I call Dave Madden at the San Mateo times and get something going. I did, but Mr. Madden wasn't in. I talked to another person in his department and told them I would like to request that they do a story on my displays and ask that all parents in the bay area, California, or the United States send a 5x7 picture of their son, daughter, brother, sister or friend that is in the military and in the middle east, so that I could display these heroes in my glass cases for all to see. The young lady I talked to said "great, we're definitely interested, it's a great idea". Before I continue I would like to take a minute to explain to you about my display. My oldest son was killed while a member of the United States Marines. He was killed on che fourth of July and was 18 years old at the time. My youngest son, Hossein, graduated from the Marine boot camp in April, 1990 and is presently in Saudi Arabia. I enclosing a copy of a card his Dad and I received from him last week before he left. I am a flag waver from way back. Over the past twenty years, I have collected every thing I could find that had to do with my America, my flag and anything red, white or blue. I fly my flag and the POW flag everyday at home. I am proud of my sons and the way thet feel about being United States Marines. My display is well known to the Marine Corp and the new recruits are brought in to see it. My customers have viewed it for years. If it's red, white or blue I probably have it or will have it. Anyway, I decided I might just as. well call your paper, some radio stations and even the TV stations to get my idea going. It seems that when the activists COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL HANDMADE ORIENTAL RUGS COMPLETE LINE OF FLOOR COVERINGS WINDOW COVERINGS. Your newspaper also said, great idea and took my address and said someone would be back to me right away. I also got the same story from KGO, KSAN, channels 7, 5, 20, 2 and channel 4. ONLY channel 4 stayed in contact and came out on Friday, August 24 and taped my displays. The young men that came were amazed to the extent of my collection. I was told it would be on the news at either 5:00 or 6:00 on Friday and as the pictures came flowing in I should stay in touch SO they could come back and do a follow up of the young men and women of our armed forces. Unfortunately there was a foot- ball game on channel 4 that evening and the report was on at 4:00 when alot of people were still working or on their way home from work. I did receive alot of calls from people that have since then come in to see my displays. However, I'm disappointed that the rest of you people thought that what I want to do wasn't important enough. KSAN told me that they would begin the announcement on Friday, but I haven't heard anything. This morning before I came to work I was watching the news on TV while reading your paper, I take the Times as well. In Palo Alto and San Jose some vietnam veterans were marching against the American involvement in the middle east. One former paratrooper said it would be another Vietnam. I can understand how these former veterans feel. Many of them were drafted and were brave not to hide in Cuba or run to Canada. Others joined to defend our country and received hostility when they came home. Not from me, I look back and wished I had written or expressed my pride and loyalty to them. I guess I'm like so many Americans, we sit and say "for shame" to the Jane Fonda's of America. But I'll be damned if I sit silent while my brave son and so many others defend our constitution. You can walk away from your job whenever you want but these young people took an oath and although their scared they have a job to do and by God they 11 do it well with or without our support. I have had contact with Major Call, a Chaplin in Oakland. He is willing to get. together a support group for parents, wives, sweethearts, etc. He has told me to pursue my photograph idea for all the world to see. He needs enough to have many people before he is authorized to set up this group. Please help Major Call and me to help them, Please ask everyone to send these photos and I will display them with pride in my cases with my sons. Thank you for your time and God Bless America. Rice 9-18 September 5, 1990 President George Bush The White House Washington, D.C. Dear Mr. President: I am writing to inform you of my wholehearted support of your handling of the current Persian Gulf crisis. The unification of the United Nations and the cooperation of the world's leading countries in condemning Iraq's actions and imposing the economic blockade are unprecedented and indicate the full measure of your leadership qualities. These are trying times with enormous implications involved for each action no matter how small. I am the father of three small boys and it is my desire to see them live long and fruitful lives. I know the actions we must take now will affect all of us both now and five, ten, even fifteen years from now. However, I believe that if America's future is to be safeguarded for future generations, the fathers and mothers of those generations must stand firm in their resolve to employ the necessary actions. I pray that we will be able to find a peaceful solution to the current crisis. However, it would be foolish to accept an easy way out if it means we will be repeating our actions five years hence only this time facing a nuclear capable enemy. I know you will continue to do what you think is best for our country and the world. I will pray for you and all of us. Very truly yours, James D. fine James D. Rice, President DAY BROWN RICE, INC. Bush President of the United States The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, DC. Dear President Bush; Sir, I am not normally the type of citizen who feels a great need to write to my President. However the current situation in the Middle East area of the World, especially the events unfolding in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq and the contigenous area's of that Geographical area have brought out my desire to take some time and write to the person whom I know must be one of the busiest men in the World today under the circumstances. Therefore I hope you will forgive my intrusion into your busy schedule. First of all, as the father of a 19 Year old Lance Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps awaiting transportation to Saudi Arabia, I indeed find myself torn between two very important emotions. Naturally my first emotion is for the safety of my son and his comrades in arms. My second emotion is one of patriotism to the greatest nation of the World, our good old United States of America. Therefore, I have been able to sort things out pretty well in my own life by the knowledge that my son has received the very best training that any of the Branches of the U.S. Armed Forces has to offer. Further, knowing my son as I do, I know that he has the ability to adapt to the situation at hand and through his rigorous training and schooling, is ready, willing and able to give 100% of himself to whatever task is assigned to him. Two short years ago, prior to my sons having reported to USMC Parris Island Recruit Training School I'm not SO sure that I would have felt this way. The Marine Corps took a very determined, yet insecure and somewhat immature young man, with the written consent of both his parents, and not only turned this young man into a well disciplined, well ordered and self confident individual. Something that is not all that easy to do in this day and age when our young folks find the lure of Alcohol and Drugs to be SO intimidating and under constant peer pressure, to be SO ingrain into their young society. I had been a Police Officer for the last 22 years and have seen almost all there is to see amongst not only our youth, but amongst their parents and other society members as well. Perhaps my occupation as a Police Officer gave me some insight into what a youngsters life is all about these days, its certainly not and easy road for them or for their parents for that matter. But I was very fortunate indeed to be able to keep my children in line for the most part and thank God for that every day that passes. Much to my surprise and joy, I recently found that my son has on at least 3 occassions, been found to be so superior in his Military Unit as to have been recommended for Meritorious Recognition and possible Rank increase. I have also learned that on many more occassions, he has been nominated and recognized as "Marine of the Month", not only at lower echelon levels, but up to Battalion Level and higher. You can imagine my joy at seeing what my son has become, especially since he is my oldest son. Page 2 Being the proud parent of this Marine, you can imagine my emotions when I learned of his involvement with "Operation Desert Shield". Being a veteren of the Vietnam era, I really had mixed emotions Mr. President. Therefore, I have been watching just about everything I can find on CNN as well as other News Media Outlets: In addition to that, I'm an Amateur Radio Operator and avid Shortwave and Scanner Radio Monitor. These hobbies have made me a sort of insider to the ongoing Air and Sea Lift Operations underway to insert, support and supply our troops involved im this ongoing operation. However one thing sticks out very prominently in my mind, and the minds of a great many other parents of US Military Personell involved in this whole affair Mr. President. That one thing is that unlike Vietnam, and I don't say this to reopen old wounds or arguments in any way, but this time around, for the greatest part that is, you as the President, have the greatest support foundation that any of your previous predecessors has the ability to gain from the American Public. Yes sir, I know there are detractors, this is evidenced by the Media report and coverage of Protestors in various area's of the USA, especially those in Washington DC. However, I for one, feel that this are but a small portion of the citizen majoity and like other Protestors of various items, find a niche in the Media coverage, only as part of the Media's efforts to show the whole overall situation, I personally don't feel that they get a great share of Media attention, unlike other times in our history. Mr. President, having achieved such wide based support from not only all corners of the United States, but as is fully appatent, from the greater major- ity of the World and almost without exception, from the United Nations itself is certainly without precedent. As you know, this is very important Sir and I can only implore that you do nothing to sidetrack this support. In the long run, and I for one believe that this thing is still only in the startup phase, you will need all of the support that you can gather, from all quadrants Sir. You have been very candid and open with the Public and the Press SO far and I would hope that you continue this posture Mr. President. You have to maintain a true sense of openess and truthfullness for the entire time that this situation continues. Any deviation from this course could prove to be a very detrimental course Mr. President. I applaud your decision to let it be publically known that you were in no way going to be "held hostage in Washington" by the actions of Iraq. And that you braved the innuendo's and accusations of those who felt that you should have been at your desk in the White House during this entire time. Excuse my language sir, but let the detractors all go to hell sir, you are more than entitled to your vacation time and your rest. God knows that if this situation were to escalate, you would find time for relaxation at a premium. Therefore, you were wise indeed to take and continue with your plans to spend some time in Maine and travel back to Washington DC only as required. I praise and support your decisions in this matter 100% Mr. President. Having had the privilage to have worked Presidential Protection Details with President Ronald Reagan during his first and second campaigns and his 8 years in office. I am well aware that no matter where you are in this great country of ours or elsewhere in the World for that matter, you are never more than a moment or two from the most sophisticated and complete communications abilities and through your able staff and advisors, are kept right up to date on the latest happenings as they occur. Page 3 Both your own style of Politics, and that of President Reagan, have been what is needed to reinforce the public's belief that there is a whole world outside the Democratic Party in this country. And although you are faced with a great many differences of opinion on all subjects, not only this most recent one in the forefront, you have proven to the American Public that you are your own man and not simply a Puppet following the Reagan Administrations Lead. As his Vice President, you were limited in your ability to set procedure, but you have now proven yourself to be your own man. Perhaps the most significant thing, directly related to the present Iraq affair, is your solicitation of other Nations to not only support our efforts but in addition and most importantly, to suggest and setup a means for their individual participation by either supplying troops to augment ours, equipment to augment our supply efforts, but being quite frank and open in suggesting a method of monetary payments to help the US taxpayer's support of this whole operation. We are in fact the "World's Policeman" by very virtue of our Power and Readyness status. But you have let it be known that we need help and have let the World know in what manners they can and are expected to support us in our fullfillment of the United Nation's Mandates as well as the attempt to keep the greatest of the Worlds commodities, OIL, flowing to all nations of the World. The American Oil Companies may in fact be taking more than a small or éven great advantage of the American Economy with their sudden and I'm not SO sure justified increase in prices for product already refined and in storeage, but hopefully when there is a break in the more important actions around the globe, you will have a complete investigation done on this matter and then perhaps future guidelines can be laid down to handle eventualities such as this. But that is not the most important matter at hand right now. Your openess and honesty with the American Public in particular is foremost Mr. President, you must keep their greater support behing you on this one Sir. Secondly, you must not be afraid to standup to the Political interests and be sure to let the Military have charge in actual operations, unencombered by the Political Interference of the Vietnam Era, and let the Diplomatic folks have their part of the job unemcumbered as well. The heat may get high, but with what is at stake here is more important than any Political Adventurism that may come about. In closing Mr. President, I'd only like to affirm my full support for your actions to date and only recommend that as a past Director of Central Intell- igenc, that perhaps now is the time to point up our shortcomings in this area and act now to strengthen and improve our Intelligence Community. They have been badly reduced and impaired in the last 15 years or so, but these World Hotspot situations show a glowing need for improved Intelligence Assests and Resources Sir. May God lend you all the Guidance and Foresight that you will need to navigate our Country through these trobled times, but in the peacefull times as well Mr. President. Respectfully John F. As a father, it is hard for me to write this letter but as a man, I feel it must be done that I must at least make the effort. My son has been in the service for one year now. He was trained as an Airborne soldier, then sent to Ft. Carson, Colorado. Just after he was sent to Ft. Carson troops were sent to Panama and, if he'd have been assigned to the 82nd Airborne like he thought he was going to be, he'd have gone to Panama. Now troops from all over the USA are being sent to Saudi Arabia, you are calling on Reserves, and my son still sets at Ft. Carson waiting to serve his country. He joined the military to serve and help his country. Others that he graduated with at Ft. Benning went to Panama, now Saudi Arabia, and he feels that he is of no use to the country. Of course, I am the only person he tells that to. Staff Sargent Haddock is an Airborne Ranger, my son's Sargent, and is beginning to feel useless also. After spending so much money to train these men is a special field I don't understand why it isn't used!) As I said, it is hard (as a father) to make this request, and I'm not sure you can do anything, but I am requesting that my son: PFC BAILEY, LASH L. 364-96-6085, Ft. Carson, CO C-1/12 and E6 Staff Sargent Haddock, Ft. Carson, CO C-1/12 be reassigned to a fighting unit, such as 101st or 82nd Airborne. IF you can help, it will be appreciated more than you know. I am proud that my son wants to be assigned where he may be needed even if it means that the chance exist that he won't come back. I know you are very busy with many mounting burdens, and I thank you for your time. You are doing a great job. My wife and I suuport you 100%. I hope the time soon comes when you can take a Real vacation. Respectfully, CC: Senator Donald Riegle Senator Carl Levin Representative Vander Jagt Michael L. Bailey KH P-51A 9/3/90 To Whom It May Concern; Obviously, the President cannot see or be made aware of the many letters he receives each week. If you feel the attached letter merits mention to him, or inclusion in a summary I will be honored. Some quick background for reference. The letter ( and Xerox copy of photo) attached is from my son, Sgt. Shawn M. Nolte, USMC. While I found the letter and sentiments touching, Shawn's background makes it even moreso. I've been in journalism/PR for 20 years; my husband is a professional photographer. Shawn grew up in an atmosphere of intellectual and cultural stimulation and with a clear value system. Until he joined the Corps about nine years ago, we despaired of his future. A typically drifting, aimless young person. The Corps brought to the fore the values and mores we had hoped we"d instilled in him. Needless to say, we are very proud of Shawn, very supportive of the Corps. We're concerned, obviously, about the possibility of his being sent to Saudi Arabia. However, this administration has handled this crisis with remarkable intelligence and efficiency That, and Shawn's excellent training, motivation and confidence, go far to alleviate our fears. So, if you tell the President be received XXX letters of support this week, I simply would like the number to increased by one. Thank you for your time and consideration. Ellison 113 Teche Dr. Lafayette, La. 70503 President George Bush 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, D.C. Dear Mr. President: I am the proud father of a soldier in the 1st Cavalry Division. As you know they have been alerted to deploy to southwest Asia. I concur with the decision to send troops to that part of the world as the U.S.A. is vulnerable to energy blackmail. However, Mr. President, this wonderful nation with its technical expertise should not be placed in such a precarious position. As an independent geologist it has been obvious for many years that we were headed for trouble. Why is it necessary to have a crisis before instituting reforms? After the crisis passes the resolve to solve the problem fades. Having taught the National Security Agency for years about the complex oil business our vulnerability comes as no surprise. Possible solutions to the problem were discussed in these seminars as well as the lead time necessary to sustain a modest increase in production. I would be more than happy to offer my services gratis to educate the rest of the people in Washington. I know that you personally understand the problems as you were involved in the drilling contracting business in Midland, Texas. We Americans constitute approximately 5% of the world's population and we use 40% of the world's energy. Energy hogs are what we have become and we are paying for it. Energy is still cheap in our society but it can't go on like this forever. Most of the industrialized world pays three or four times as much for gasoline as we do. Let's not mortgage our grandchildren's futures with a balance of payment deficit due to our foreign energy demands. The U.S. is not an energy poor nation like Japan. We have a vast wealth of coal and oil shale that is untapped and we still are the second biggest producer of oil in the world. However, the U.S. oil reserve position is poor and this to some degree is the result of the dismantling of our domestic oil industry. The vast bulk of onshore oil and gas is found by small oil companies and individuals. It was dismantled by disuse as the direct result of importation of "cheap" foreign crude by the major oil companies. How cheap is it now with American troops in Saudi Arabia? The electronic journalists selectively edit the gasoline consumers responses to agree with their bias. They interview some idiot and ask what they think of the ten to fifteen percent rise in gasoline prices. Invariably they think they have been set upon by Ali Babba and the forty thieves. One should keep this in perspective by equating the price of gasoline to the risky business involved in producing and delivering a cup (1/16 gallon) of coffee. The U.S. had an energy crisis in 1973. The answer to this past crisis was the creation of the Department of Energy. The cost to the U.S. taxpayer yearly of this regulatory body closely approximates the value of our domestically produced oil. What a great deal for the beleaguered American taxpayer. The domestic oil industry had been saying for years that we were running out of oil but no one listened. The Energy Department concentrated on regulating rather than on developing alternative energy sources. Develop alternative fuels but in the meantime don't drill off this or that coast. Don't put that nuclear reactor here. Don't mine that oil shale it creates a tailing pile. These measures are needed now as an interim solution to our ongoing energy crisis. The domestic oil industry should be stimulated by the present increase in price. The increase in drilling activity should uncover some additional reserves. However, let us not delude ourselves. The domestic oil industry can never satisfy our insatiable appetite for oil. Developing alternative fuels is the answer. It is difficult to do in our free market society but it's needed if we are to survive. Our greatest competitors Germany and Japan are more vulnerable than we are to the price of energy and they don't have trade deficits. We will either learn to compete or perish. We need fresh ideas in our search for energy independence. One such idea is the electrolysis of water. This yields hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen combines with atmospheric oxygen (burns) and what comes out the tailpipe, water. Improved solar cells could be installed on every roof top to charge batteries to power appliances or automobiles. Breeder reactors should be built to increase the amount of nuclear fuel that we have; then that additional fuel can be used to generate electrical power. Make no mistake, the industrialized energy impoverished countries of the world, France for instance, are already pursuing this course. We may need to design a technique to rid ourselves of the resultant nuclear waste. Digging holes in the subducting on the sea floor so that radioactive waste can be deposited in the holes might be an answer as the waste would disappear for scores of millions of years. At the turn of the century approximately one-half the crop land in the U.S. was used for raising fodder for horses and mules. The horses and mules used the energy in God's sunshine to move America and till the soil. Today ethanol, ethyl alcohol from corn, is touted as a partial solution to our energy crisis. This is obviously a losing proposition as draft animals are more efficient in utilizing energy than a process that makes alcohol out of corn. This poor solution to the energy problem is subsidized directly by the American taxpayer. Subsidized also by the American taxpayer is the build up of our armed forces in the Persian Gulf. The presence of the Iraqi Army on the northern boundary of Saudi Arabia is a grab for power through the control of oil resources. We fear that Saddam Hussein could control an unacceptable amount of the oil reserves of the world and we constantly are being informed of the tremendous expenses involved. We shouldn't have placed ourselves in such a dependent position. Your aware of all these facts I know but I just thought I'd write and let you know how one American feels. He has been in the service of his country for twelve years and is proud of what he does, as we are proud of him. Two days after Iraq invaded Kuwait, my brother drafted a letter to us, his family. This letter was quite upsetting because, in essence, what he was doing was saying goodbye to us should he not return from this crisis. And as hard as it was to. read those words, I understand and wholly support our (the United States) involvement in the Persian Gulf crisis. I look at my two young boys and I want them to be able to enjoy the same lifestyle that I have become accustomed to. When I watched as that mad man, Hussein, so flamboyantly raped the basic human rights of those hostages on national television, I was appalled. If a man - and I use that word lightly, as man implies someone who is human and I don't believe that he is a member of our human race - is permitted to run roughshod over other countries, not to mention his own people, that will be the end of the world as I know it. I believe you, as one of the great presidents of this country, in conjunction with all the other world leaders, will bring this situation to a head as soon as possible. I am grateful for your swift intervention in this situation. I selfishly wish by brother were not involved, but I know that this is what he was trained to do, and this is what he wants to do. Therefore, I rest easier. I appreciate your honesty with regard to this crisis. Many lives will be disrupted, held by fear by worry. by the constant not knowing. but many lives have done this before which allow us new the privilages the freedoms of being an American. who in their right mind could easily decide the right and wrong in something Do important ,that would touch the lives of so many and not feel a deep sense of dread feel Mr. President that you fully understand the way America truly feels. I have no doubts that great thought, much concern and alot of courage goes into every decision you have made and will continue to make through out this ordeal. as a father you understand the worries, the fears the pain, as an American you have the pride, the courage and the strength to forge ahead and protect what Do many have fought for. no one goes into what may be a long and terriable battle without fear. America cannot be held by the throat by such a manical Dort as Sadam Huessain. He nor his type must ever be given the idea they make America tremble by his heartless, cold and insane actions. His mis use of power is appalling, his attempt at pertraying him- self a protector of children is pathetic. America must stand tall, unshaken, proud and brave because that is exactly what we are. The people I'm talked tol and D have friends of relatives in neighboring states) think you have handled this siteration as it should have been handled. They feel you're doing (with great emphasis on proud) America proud. Never have 4 felt such patriotic unity as these past few weeks. Young men, old men, veterns of Vietnam, mothers who work in factories, people of all ages and backgrounds have expressed the desire to go or be of help in some way. They realize we truly are our brother's keeper and that if today it's Kuwait, tomorrow it could be Sandi Cuabia and next week Cimerica. We have the right, the need to protect our's and that which affects us. I watch with great pride whenever our Doldiers are shown on television Somewhere a mother's heart is heavy but very proud each time a face shows on the screen. as the mother of two teen aged Dons I hope I have the courage, the dignity and the strength to endure should I have to let one or both of my boys go off onto foreign soil to protect our country. D can understand Mr. Molnar's anquish but I 'm Dure in his heart there is great pride at his son, the Marine and I'm Dure his sen takes great pride at being an American. Mr. President no leader can ever be popular with everyone. I'm Dure you recieve Lots of mail that assures you of that. I can only hope you get alot more mail like this that let's you know we're behind you. we trust you with our children, our soldiers and thank you whole heartedly for giving us dignity, pride and love of our country at such a crucial time. As I sit here this morning watching the updates on the Persian Gulf situation and wondering where my military son might be, I can onlv conclude that a life is worth more than the price of oil and gasoline. I look around each day and see the continuance of American life without interruption. When are we going to learn to compromise in order to keep Deace in the world? We must compromise to save innocent Deonle, regardless of what country they fall a victim. I dislike the term "human shield, " but at this time I think of mv son as a "human shield" just as the hostages are being called. My son is a. "human shield" to shield off the aggression of Saddam Hussein and to shield off the increase of the price of oil. Is this necessary in your judgment? Definately not in mine. With persistence we can find a way to use less oil, thus making this current crisis unnecessarv. I want my son back. I want to see the hostages returned to their countries. I want all innocent people to go unharmed. Words need to prevail at this time concerning this situation. Peace must be made soon. War must become obsolete. I love the wav of life that we have in this country, but I love my son more. Respectfully Yours, Lady mother Judy Hampton Damplan of Timothy David Randolnh, Armv--Ft. Saratoga, As you already know, his ship is in the Persion Gulf. When he first told me, this was where he would be ship to, I got upset at the fact that you would let something like this happen. I reilize now that this is my husbands job. When he first went into the Navy we did not anticipate him having to face something like this. I am sure he stands behind you 100%, and me being his wife will stand behind you, as will he. My husband is an only child, and the last in his family to carry on the name. I have heard some rumor, that in this case he could, if it was war time he could go to a nutral zone if he wishes. Is this true, or dose someone in his family have to die in the war first, since he was not drafted? If you could send me information on this subject his mother and myself would apprciate it. I think you sould send a secret force into Iraq and take out thire leader. Ithink it was very roud of him to say the things he did about you, when he brouht it on himself. The people of Iraq ar ill manered, and uneducated. Thay have burned the American, British, and Russan flags. We, on the other hand have not done anything of this kind. It just goes to prove that we are the smarter nation. It also proves ther ignorence. I think it would be a grave mistake on thire part to push thire luck. D6 you realy think that they will us gases? Will we do the same? I pesonaly think you sould drop a nucler bombon thire butts, and put them out of thire pour, pathetick miserys. My father always says, if a mouce gets baked into a corner with nowhere to go, he will come out fighting like a tiger. I believe this is what Iraq will do. Even though thay will be defeated. Don't back down. They just like to act tough. It's all talk and no action. My father also told me, don't over start a fight, end it. Don't trust anyone, even your very best friend will stab you in the back, if given the chance. Tell our military forces in Sadi Arabia not to be so frogy, and not to jump the gun. For this is a sure way to begin a war, as you know. Will our boys be coming home after the crisis is over? I know that there is a shortage of funds in the military. As the CNN hes reported, this operation will coast the tax payers alot of money. Do you think Iraq will hold the Americans that are there as a way to make you pull out military troops? Do you think he will brung them any harm? If so what will you do about it? If the Sadies wonted you tc pull out military troops, would you do it? Do you think that there will be a war? If so would you recall a mager portion of thr Reserves? Why don't you just let Kawit go back as a part of the Iraq territory? Do we have enogh oil supply to last for a long period of time, if need be? If at all posible I would like for this letter to be replided by President Bush himself.
