Dear Mr. President:
I want you to know that my family and I stand behind your decision to
send troops to the Middle East. I do not say this lightly since four
of my five children are in military service. My twins are already over
there and the other two could be soon.
I fully understand what this conflict could cost my family and our
nation in the lives of our bravest and best young people. But I also
realize that agression against a peaceful neighbor can not be tolerated
and the interests of our nation and the civilized world must be protected.
My sons knew when they joined the military service that their signatures
meant they were willing to give their lives for their country and freedom
if the need arose. I am very proud of them sir, as I too am proud of you
for standing in the face of the tyranny that Iraq has presented.
I pray for you and your staff daily that God will guide you in the decisions
you make, and that He will protect the proud young people of our military
forces. God bless you.

Dear President Bush:
For the past several weeks I have listened to the news media and
citizens criticize you and I am infuriated.
It is apparent that people speak before they think. I am referring to
your vacation which you justly deserved. It saddens me to think that
people can be so critical. They must not realize that you are
constantly kept abreast of world affairs and still have to make
critical decisions. And, I don't understand the Father/Professor who
sent a letter to the New York Times. Didn't his son know when he
enlisted that he might face difficult situations?
As a Mother whose son is serving with the 24th Mechanized Infantry
Division in Saudi Arabia, I commend you for the decisions made and to
be made. I have confidence that the right decisions will be made - all
of which weight heavily upon you.
Today, while listening to a news broadcast, I was appalled by the
report that Senator Mark Hatfield stated that you acted prematurely in
sending our troops to Saudi Arabia. *After contemplating Senator
Hatfield's remark, I sat down and wrote him a letter cautioning him, as
well other Senators and Representatives, to use good judgement before
speaking as we need to be united in our efforts. Our servicemen and
women need encouragement, appreciation, and a united government.
I pray that all our military people, as well as those who are held
hostage, will soon return safely to their families and be welcomed home
by a united America. Let's not have another Vietnam.
God be with you, and thank you for listening to a concerned citizen and
Mother.
Sincerely,
Jane aamold

Dear Mr. President:
I am writing to express sincere approval for the way you are
leading this country and most of the world in dealing with the
likes of Saddam Hussein.
My wife and I have three sons, all married to fine women, and all
have preschool children. The oldest son is a minister, the
middle son works with me in this child-care program, and the
youngest serves in the 24th Infantry (Mechanized) out of Hunter
Army Air Field at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He leaves this week for
duty in Saudi Arabia We are grateful for our family and proud
that our youngest son, James, can serve at this time. Of course,
we are very concerned about him and all the other men and women
standing against this "madman of the Middle East".
Yesterday in an adult Bible class that I teach I expressed to the
group how frustrating it is for one evil-bent, misguided man, Mr.
Hussein, to cause so much suffering, expense, and turmoil in the
world, and how helpless all of us feel about the situation. I
told my class that if there was anything I could do by being in
Saudi Arabia I would go! Of course, we pray daily for you and
everyone involved, but I am willing for you to call upon me to be
of service if there is anything I can do.
I am 52 years of age, hold a college degree in English from
Indiana University, and am battle-scarred from 23 years of work-
ing with children and young people in this small program where I
serve as administrator. Let me know if and what someone of my
age and experience can do. May God bless you!
Respectifully,

Dear Mr. President:
It is with a great deal of apprehension and a heavy heart that I write to you
this morning. My son, Marine 2nd Lieut. David E. Hodil is on his way to Saudi Arabia,
along with so many more of the cream of the young men and women of our Nation. It is
my wish that you know that we support your policies in the Middle East and my husband
and I concur with your decision to commit American Forces to Saudi Arabia and to impose
sanctions on the country of Iraq. You could do no less!
Seriously doubting that you ever see my letter, it still gives me a small measure
of comfort to write it, knowing that I have placed a most precious gift in your capable
hands. We have two older married children and are also the proud grandparents of four.
We have such high hopes for our youngest son and his dedication to God and Country, and
the high ideals and standards he has set for himself are a source of pride for his family.
We live on the lovely Eastern Shore of Maryland where my husband works for the Maryland
Dept. of Natural Resources as an Administrator. I am a Secretary at Chesapeake College.
One of the more interesting facts about David is that he had to secure a "Medical
Waiver" just to get into the Corps, a fact little known by his fellow Marines. David,
you see, came down with Cancer at age 19 when he was beginning his Sophomore year at
Mississippi State University and had to stay out of college for one full year, battling
his disease, with three major operations, and a weight drop of over 40 lbs. Needless
to say, David's courage and determination has been an inspiration to a lot of folks.
He returned to college, graduated with high marks, and was off to Quantico, VA for OCS
and TBS Schools. His Dad and I are rightfully very proud of our Marine.
It is certainly not my place to advise my President of what to think or do with
regard to foreign policy, for I am painfully aware that your burdens at the present
time are greater than anyone dare imagines and greater than anyone would want them to
be, but I do wish to tender our best wishes to you and to Mrs. Bush and to say that we
are behind you all the way! With hope for the future, I remain
Patriced D. Hodic
Yours sincerely

Dear Mr. President:
Never before have I written to the President of the United States nor any
member of congress. But I feel that with all that is happening in the world
you would appreciate an understanding letter.
I am married and have only one child a. son. He will be twenty-five years old
on Monday, August. 20th. We will not celebrate his birthday as Tuesday his
ship, the USS Moosbrugger, set out heading for the Middle East.
No mother wants her son to go to an area where there is political unrest with
the possibility of war. But I write you to tell you I support what actions
you are taking. I realize that you are knowledgeable and well-informed and
are doing what you feel is best for all Americans.
I know our son and know he is ready and able to serve his country. He has
been instructed by competent superiors; he is strong, wise, and makes sound
decisions.
In my prayers for all the men and women in the military, I'll also pray for
you. Mr. President, God bless you and God bless these United States.

Honorable President of

Dear Mr. President,
As a patriotic U.S. citizen and a U.S. Navy veteran of the
Viet Nam conflict, who spent a deployment in Viet Nam during
1968, I now find myself with much at stake in this Middle
East Crisis as well. You see, my only son, Kevin, is a
member of the 5th U.S. Marines and is presently deployed
somewhere in Saudi Arabia.
The purpose of this letter is threefold:
First, I want to commend you for the way you have handled the
crisis to this point. You have brilliantly bought enough
time, through the expert use of the media, to build the
necessary troop strength for the defense of the friendly Arab
countries. I feel that the American people, and the rest of
the free world support our actions.
Second, I feel strongly that the oil producing countries
involved with this crisis and the American people must and
will support the added costs of this operation. As an example
of how this might be done, I suggest we ask the oil producing
countries who we are helping in this crisis to discount their
oil prices to the supporting countries. The price per barrel
would go with market demand but then the purchaser of that
oil would pass the amount, over the discounted price, to the
governments involved. This would be an easy method to monitor
and control. If, for our purposes, this would not generate
the necessary funding, then a modest Temporary Gas Tax might
be in order. It could be short term and require renewal on a
regular basis in order for it to continue. The public would
accept this concept.
Mr. President
Page 2
Third, please do not allow this crisis to turn into another
Viet Nam. If my son must risk his life, and I must risk the
loss of my only son, then let it be because we were taking
the necessary actions to thwart this Hitler like tyrant from
imposing himself on peaceful nations in the Middle East. Many
are at risk including hostages and the military personal
there. Surely I want no lives lost, but we must take decisive
action, without hesitation, if or when required, even at the
risk of losing the precious lives of hostages or military
personnel. Less loss will occur if we react in this manner,
rather than the way we did in Viet Nam. I believe history
would judge your actions favorably.
Good luck, and keep up the good work.
Very Respectfully,

Dear President Bush,
My son is a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corp and is
currently on duty somewhere in Saudi Arabia. I am deeply
concerned for his well being and pray that the situation in
the middle east will be quickly resolved in a peaceful
manor. Unfortunately, based upon what I hear and read, it
appears more and more unlikely that a peaceful solution will
be found.
If armed conflict is inevitable, I firmly believe that my
son and many thousands of our troops will have a better
chance of survival if we take the initiative. To wait until
Iraq strikes the first blow would be to sign the death
warrant for many thousands of our fine young men. I realize
that to strike first is not considered to be the acceptable
thing to do. However, if our intent is to win with a
minimum of loss of life then I strongly feel the
simultaneous destruction of Iraq's offensive capability is
essential.
Mr. President, I am not a "Hawk". I love our great nation
and fear for my son's well being. However, I don't believe
that America can afford to engage in another Korea or
Vietnam. If we are going to be engaged in armed conflict
then I pray that our objective will be to win. All actions
that are to be taken must have the objective of absolute
victory. Anything less would be a complete waste of lives.
Mr. President, I do not envy you as you are forced to make
the life and death decisions that you will surely have to
make in the coming days. Please accept my prayers and
complete support in whatever decisions you make.
Sincerely;
Ronald Ward

Dear Mr. President:
As the mother of a Marine, Lcpl. Frank Merone, presently serving in
Saudi Arabia, I wish to convey to you our family's complete support and prayers.
May God continue to guide you in your actions.
I came to this great country as a refugee from World War II. We were
grateful to be welcomed into this Land of the Free where we were allowed to
work and reach the American Dream. One of my most memorable days was the
day I became a United States citizen.
I am extremely proud of my son who is SO eager to serve his country - in
a way he is repaying a little for all that my family has received. Yes, I worry
and pray that he and all our men and women come home safely but I know he is
where he is needed and wanted to be.
Our Congresswoman, Susan Molinari, had the flag over the Capitol flown
in his name and will bring me that flag - I shall treasure it always. She has been
a tremendous support to all of us here on Staten Island. We have formed a
"Operation Desert Shield Support Group" and she was kind enough to attend our
first meeting.
Mr. President, our prayers are with you, your family and all your staff.
God bless you and this great land of ours.

Patriced Yours sincerely D. Hodic

Dear President Bush:
I say that with all do respect for your
position as the Leader of this country. I
couldn't think of a better person to be in
the White House at this time, because your
Army has the most precious parts of my being,
which is My ONLY SON (Frank Stewart III) in
the 82nd Airborne from Ft. Bragg NC.
That is why I thank GOD you are the man
placed at the head of the Nation. You and
your wife are exactly what this country and

much to me, because we have been through so
much together. I thought what looked like bad
times then would never end, but GOD brought us
through. So please Mr. President, put great
thought and consideration on this current issue
SO that our sons, daughters, husbands, mothers,

DEAR MR. PRESIDENT:
Thank you for your stand on the Middle East crisis.
For what it's worth my full support, thoughts and
prayers are with you and will be, whether the
Crisis is settled by diplomacy or warfare.
In general I believe in avoiding physical actions,
in settling issues, sincerely believing in the sanctity
of life and in negotiating and/or compramise to
settle differences.
However, there are limits to avoiding conflicts and
when the willingness, to negotiate and/or companise
IS easily newed as a willingness to "back down'
from physical actions, there IS little choice for
a man or a country of men.
America's actions, as a country, since WWII
and the American PRESS' over-eagerness, along
with private citizens in exalted positions (such
as Jane Fonda during Viet Nam), to brand America
as the "Black Hat" whenever any country violated
(2)
our rights as a nation, are (in my opinion) a
major cause of madmen, like Saddam Hussein,
to believe America will never stand firm to
protect our interests and/or that of our allies
or countries that, in time of need, rush to
be our allies. your stand, along with the
8 years of firmness on the part of former
President Reagan, is correct in this Crisis.
In fact you had no other Choice without
the forfecture of any chance for America's
again becoming the country it can be, and
should be,
Your naming Saddam Hussein, for the liar and
murderer he's proved himself to be, was mild.
your comparision of him to Hitler was far
more accurate. Had Hitler been stopped early on
the world would have been spared the grief, by
both sides, of WWII. In view of the greater
potential of destruction, by neucular and/or chemical
critical. weapons, today stopping Hussein 15 even more
My gut reaction IS Hussein be eliminated, once
and for all, by whatever means possible. Even
to the point of an open reward for his
death,
In addition, I feel it's time that all
politicians, irregardless of party, stand up
and be publically counted, And those
unwilling to fully support a firm stand
by America, including, if necessary, a
total commitment to warfare, should be
vated out of office ASAP. In my mind the
failure to support your country, in times
of crisis, is to support it's enemies. In
a word - TREASON, This includes all citizens,
whether an elected/bureaucratic offical, a
newsperson or a private citizen, especially
those in public life,
Unlike many who are complaining of the inconvience,
resulting from your stance, and/or the potential
of financial losses from increased oil/gas prices
or decreases in the stock market, I have
So little., financially, to lose it doesn't matter
to me,
Nothing to lose except one thing My only
Son, Sgt, Shawn Sanford of the 82nd Airborne.

Dear Mr. Bush,
I am a United States Marine's wife. I wish to convey to you
the distress and concern I am feeling at this time of crisis in
the Middle East.
My husband is due to deploy in a few days. I am frighten
for him, though I understand the current need for our military
presence in the region.
Myself, as I am confident is the opinion of the American
people as a whole, will not be tolerant of extended deployment
of our troops. It is my hope that we "take care of business",
and bring our men home. I trust you feel the same, and that we
will be quick and effective in our actions.
I pray for your good judgement, the safety of our troops,
and my thoughts go out to the people of Kuwait.
Sincerely,

Dear President Bush:
We are an experienced Army family. My first husband was
killed in action during his second tour in Vietnam. Some years
later, I married his close friend (fortunately for me, a
bachelor). My husband served a total of forty-two years in the
U. S. Army (enlisted, West Point, commissioned). He served one
year in combat during the Korean War and three-and-a-half years
in Vietnam. My husband's final assignment was as Chief of the
U.S. Military Mission to Turkey for four years (1982-1986). We
were pleased to see President Ozal's response to this situation.
Our son, 2nd Lieutenant John K. Lange graduated from the
United States Military Academy in May of 1990. As I write this
letter, he is aboard an aircraft enroute to Saudi Arabia. I
write to express our full and total support of your action in
sending U.S. military troops to support and/or defend Kuwait,
Saudi Arabia and our own interests in the Middle East.
We are proud of John, we are proud of you and we are
proud of our Country.

The purpose of this letter is to express my support for the courageous
stand you have taken against the aggression that has been committed
by Iraq.
I have a son who is a captain in the U.S. Army. Although I recognize
that he and all our servicemen overseas are in danger, the United States
and other nations must stop this ruthless and unprincipled individual.
Although retired as a public school principal and too old for the

never allow this.

Dear Pres. Bush
1. I would like to extend my support of the action your
are taking in the Persian Gulf Crisis. I believe that we
need to nip the actions of this madman in the bud.
2. But as a wife of a Staff sergeant deployed over there
at this time, I beg you that whatever you plan to do, please
do it quickly. My husband, as well as the thousands of others
over there are not used to the heat of the Saudi Arabian
desert. It also seems, and I realize that we do not get the
whole picture on the news, that the longer we wait to take
action the more the situation worsens. So for the sake of
our men and women deployed there and also for the sake of
the hostages, please to something soon. Thank you for your
time.

President George Bush
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear President Bush:
My name is Cheryl Brinson Byerly and I wish to
express my unqualified support of your actions
regarding the crisis in the Middle East.
I am engaged to be married to GySgt. William C.
Wilson currently deployed with the 26th Marine
Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Inchon.
Yesterday, 08/07/90, was one of the most
painful and proud days of my life. We have
been separtated geographically, I live in
Houston, and was unable to travel to Morehead
City to wish him farewell and Godspeed; but, I
know in my heart he appreciates my feelings
nontheless. This brief statement of fact all
leads to the following paragraph.
Again, I want to make you aware of my
unconditional support. Yes, as I am sure you
realize, this is a very difficult time for us
all; but, I believe as Americans we will be
victorious. My one request to you is that we
do not allow another situation like the Vietnam
conflict to arise. The Vietnam conflict did
CHERYL BRINSON BYERLY
did much to destroy faith and patriotism in our
great nation and we should never allow such
things to happen again. If our involvement in
the Middle East is necessary, and I believe it
is, we must take action to end the crisis as
expeditiously as possible. I understand that
war is unpleasant and there will be many
protests from many Americans. We must stand
together as a country and support our men and
women in their efforts to protect our values.
We should not allow the American public to
become disillusioned and the service members to
be treated as the troops returned from Vietnam.
Please, lets work together to keep the
patriotism renaissance strong.
I offer my prayer to the men and women in the
armed services, you, the American people, and
the world; God bless us all.
Sincerely,
Chery Brinson Brinson Byerly Byerlep

Dear Mr. Bush:
You certainly do not need a letter from a plain plug citizen;
But you do need to know that I think you are doing a grand job
with this thing in Iraq--and showing extreme patience.
The Ambassador from Kuwait said on TV that his country would
pay the bill--figure up what you need and tell him to cut
you a check.
My son, Charles Jr., a career Marine has volunteered to go over--
and he would do you a good job. My son-in-law and daughter are
at the base close to Adana, Turkey. He works on the jet
planes in the Air Force and I know he will do you a good
job too.
And my older brother, who went thru North Africa in WW II
told our father on his return about the aRabs-the only thing they
understand is the business end of a rifle. And I believed him.
I am now at the point where I think you will need to sink ships, blow
planes from the sky, and level everything standing in Iraq.
sich
I am afraid that our faint of heart americans will not stay with
you if this thing lasts too long a period of time.
Most respectfully,
Charles D. Michael
