My fellow Texans -- it's great to be back in Beeville. And, of course, it's always a delight to come back to Texas with a special friend, Secretary of State James Baker\ ( (You know, Jim has a ranch just down the road called "Rock Pile." And believe me, it is. ) ) But I've got to tell you, I wouldn't miss this barbecue for anything. The good people of Bee County stood by me last year; and I am here today to stand by you. Since I was last here, we've had a busy year -- I've had to go to Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Malta and a lot of other places. But whenever I go abroad, it just makes me think more of home. Some may think it's corny, but I've just got to say it: it's great to be back in Texas. \\\\ You know, I've just come from the beautiful Lazy F Ranch over in Goliad County, a region rich in Texas history. ( (And while we were hunting quail today, Will Farrish brought along a bird dog unlike any I've ever seen before. We came up to a 2 thicket, and Will said to me: "Now George, just watch this. " And that old dog walked up to the bush and scratched the ground one time. Will said: "That means there's one bird in the bush." The dog went into the thicket, and sure enough -- one bird was flushed out. We shot and bagged 'em. Then we went to another spot. The dog scratched the ground twice, and sure enough -- two birds were flushed out, shot and bagged. And then we came up to a huge briar patch, and the dog grabbed a stick in his mouth, and stood in front of Will, and just waved his head up and down. Will seemed puzzled a moment. And then he said: "Mister President, this is kind of hard to figure out, but I think my dog is saying that there's more dang birds in there than you can shake a stick at. ")) Kidding aside, when I was flying into Chase Naval Air Station, I couldn't help but once again admire the gentle beauty of this land. Goliad, Bee -- these counties in that stretch between the Nueces and the Guadalupe rivers are part of a beautiful, gentle country. You're lucky to live here. I consider myself lucky just to visit here, even if it is only just once a year. So thank you for putting on this little barbecue. I hope this day has been as good to you as it has to me. Thank you, God bless and God bless America. # # #
