Hagin Kelly Luce I. PURPOSE To meet leading female athletes in recognition of National Girl and Women in Sports Day and to present the Flo Hyman Memorial Award to Evelyn Ashford. II. BACKGROUND The Women Sports Foundation founded in 1974 is a national, non profit, educational organization that provides leadership, funding and developmental programs for girls and women in sports. The National Girls and Women in Sports Day was inaugurated in 1987 by Senator Robert Packwood. In 1989 Congresswomen Olympia Snowe and Senator Packwood introduced a joint resolution designating Feb 2, 1989 as the third National Girls and Women in Sports Day. It was established to celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes in order to emphasize participation in sports. The Flo Hyman Award is presented to a female athlete who epitomizes the on and off the field spirit, dedication and commitment of Flo Hyman, the 1984 Olympic captain who died of Marfan's syndrome in 1986. Flo Hyman and Senator Packwood worked together on the passage of Title IX legislation prohibiting sex discrimination in schools receiving federal funds. Evelyn Ashford is a winner of one gold and one silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games, and two gold medals at the 1984 Games. In addition to her athlelic activities she was National Co-chairperson of "Athletes for Literacy," sponsored by the National Literacy Coalition and PLUS. Ms. Ashford was a member of the 1976, 1984 and 1988 Olympic teams and was elected most respected among her Olympic peers. III. WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 2--President George Bush will meet with leading female athletes today in the Oval Office to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day and to present the Women's Sports Foundation Flo Hyman Award to Evelyn Ashford, 31, three- time track Olympian and gold medalist from Shreveport, LA. Ashford won her third gold medal and a silver at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. She is a co-chairperson of "Athletes for Literacy," and was recently introduced at a National Literacy Honors dinner here saluting Barbara Bush. Announcing the winner of the Flo Hyman Award will be Sen. Bob Packwood (R-OR), who originally conceived of the day as a way to honor the achievements of America's female athletes and to recognize the "dignity, spirit and commitment to excellence" of Flo Hyman, captain of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team who died of Marfan's syndrome in 1986. One of the men said it was alright -- everyone knows how to read my lips.) ) The Flo Hyman Award is presented to the female athlete who epitomizes the spirit, dedication and commitment of Flo Hyman, who was the 1984 Olympic volleyball captain. This award is given in her memory, and I am pleased to present it today. Everyone here knows Evelyn Ashford. She is a three-time track Olympian, and won her third gold medal and a silver at the 1988 Olympics. She is truly an outstanding athlete, and carries with her the respect of her peers. I know Barbara appreciates Evelyn's tremendous work as National Co-chairperson of "Athletes for Literacy." Evelyn, I'd like to present the Flo Hyman Award to you now. Congratulations.
