PURPOSE
To meet leading female athletes in recognition of National Girl and Women
in Sports Day and to present the Flo Hyman Memorial Award to Evelyn
Ashford.
II.
BACKGROUND
The Women Sports Foundation founded in 1974 is a national, non profit,
educational organization that provides leadership, funding and
developmental programs for girls and women in sports.
The National Girls and Women in Sports Day was inaugurated in 1987 by
Senator Robert Packwood. In 1989 Congresswomen Olympia Snowe and
Senator Packwood introduced a joint resolution designating Feb 2, 1989
as the third National Girls and Women in Sports Day. It was established
to celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes in order to emphasize
participation in sports.
The Flo Hyman Award is presented to a female athlete who epitomizes the
on and off the field spirit, dedication and commitment of Flo Hyman, the
1984 Olympic captain who died of Marfan's syndrome in 1986. Flo Hyman
and Senator Packwood worked together on the passage of Title IX legislation
prohibiting sex discrimination in schools receiving federal funds.
Evelyn Ashford is a winner of one gold and one silver medal at the
1988 Olympic Games, and two gold medals at the 1984 Games. In
addition to her athlelic activities she was National Co-chairperson of
"Athletes for Literacy," sponsored by the National Literacy Coalition
and PLUS. Ms. Ashford was a member of the 1976, 1984 and 1988
Olympic teams and was elected most respected among her Olympic peers.

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: NATIONAL WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY
AND FLO HYMAN MEMORIAL AWARD CEREMONY
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1989
I'll keep this short, because my voice is so bad.
((Yesterday I was at a meeting, however, and decided not to
deliver my remarks. One of the men said it was alright --
everyone knows how to read my lips.) )
The Flo Hyman Award is presented to the female athlete who
epitomizes the spirit, dedication and commitment of Flo Hyman,
who was the 1984 Olympic volleyball captain. This award is given
in her memory, and I am pleased to present it today.
Everyone here knows Evelyn Ashford. She is a three-time
track Olympian, and won her third gold medal and a silver at the
1988 Olympics. She is truly an outstanding athlete, and carries
with her the respect of her peers. I know Barbara appreciates
Evelyn's tremendous work as National Co-chairperson of "Athletes
for Literacy."
Evelyn, I'd like to present the Flo Hyman Award to you now.
Congratulations.
