TALKING POINTS -- YOUTH FOR TOMORROW BENEFIT
June 20, 1989 - Kennedy Center
Great to see Joe and Pat Gibbs tonight, as well as my good
friends Jack and Joanne Kemp, and of course Donald Graham.
About five years ago, I remember Joe launched a home for boys
who needed his help. He founded Youth For Tomorrow, and worked
to keep kids in school and off drugs. Now, Youth For Tomorrow
is operating at full capacity (27 boys), with professional
counselors and a teaching faculty.
- 2 -
Under Joe's leadership, these boys are given personal direction,
spiritual guidance and educational opportunity. And they're
getting something they often can't get anywhere else -- a loving
home.
I've heard Joe say that "other people's lost causes are our
special cases." He's obviously had a big effect on some of
those "special cases," as a role model and as a friend. This is
the kind of service to others that defines a "successful" life,
and in my opinion Joe Gibbs is one of the biggest successes
around -- on or off the field.
- 3 -
I understand tonight's event will benefit the expansion of the
home, and Barbara and I appreciate your support greatly. I know
how thrilled she is to be the honorary Co-Chairman of this
concert tonight.
Barbara, my grandson George P. and I have been sitting with Matt
Ciarlegio ( (Car-LEGG-ee-oh)) , one of the boys from the home --
and I look forward to the day when we can have even more boys
like him there doing well and moving forward. Good luck, Matt,
and thank you all. God bless you.

President-Elect George Bush
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20501
Dear Mr. President-Elect and Mrs. Bush,
Congratulations! Pat and I are absolutely delighted that you will be our
next President. Our prayers were with you throughout the campaign and you
can Barbara. be assured of our continued support. We think the world of you and
Nearly five years ago, you helped me launch a home for boys whose
lives are "at risk" from substance abuse and school truancy. As you will see
from a review of the enclosures, Youth for Tomorrow is now a successful life-
changing home for boys who other people had given up on as lost causes.
We couldn't have come so far without your help as well as that of the

Due to the needs in the Washington, D.C. area, we plan an expansion of
our facilities and staff to accommodate more young boys who want our help.
YFT's Trustees are committed to meet the growing demand for our residential
program.
I am writing to ask you and Barbara to consider two invitations from Youth
for Tomorrow. Please feel absolutely no pressure to accept. You have already
done so much. But, if it would seem like something you would enjoy, we would
consider it an honor and a privilege if:
(1)
You and Barbara would join us at a Youth for Tomorrow Benefit
Concert this Spring at the Kennedy Center.
(2)
Barbara would serve as Honorary Chairman of Youth for
Tomorrow.
The Benefit Concert is tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 17;
Monday, May 1; or Sunday, May 21. These dates are on hold at the Kennedy
Center until we hear from you.
We have asked Donald Graham, Publisher of The Washington Post to be
Chairman of the event. He joins me in encouraging your favorable response.
I hope Barbara will consider becoming Honorary Chairman of Youth for
Tomorrow. We have the utmost respect for her commitment to fighting illiteracy
and improving the educational achievements of our youth.
Furthermore, the love and respect you share with your family provides a
perfect role model for our boys.
Thank you for taking the time in a pressing schedule to consider these
invitations. They come out of our high regard for you and Barbara. Remember -
no pressure! And again, let Pat and I extend our heartfelt congratulations, Mr.
President.
Sincerely,
Smill Joe Gibbs

the "home" upon referral from juvenile courts, social, service agencies
and private placements. Currently, 26 boys are enrolled as residents
in the YFT program. Professional counselors and a teaching faculty
provide personal direction, spiritual guidance and educational
opportunity. Each boy studies under an "individualized" academic
program, participates in a physical fitness routine, performs campus
maintainence and housekeeping chores--including doing his own
laundry--and participates in daily spiritual activities.
This fall three boys graduated from YFT and enrolled in college.
Two other boys were able to return to their natural parents upon
successful completion of the program.

PHASE II
From YFT's inception, the Trustees believed that boys throughout this
entire region should be served. Boys from three states (Virginia, West Virginia
and Maryland) and the District of Columbia are residents with an additional 25
boys on the "home's" waiting list.
YFT plans call for a program serving 60-100 boys per year on its 137 acre
campus. This planned growth in its residential program requires $10 million
for program development, a capital expenditure campaign, and an increased
level of general support to meet the increased costs of operation.
The Trustees need to construct two additional residences for the boys and
their counselors, an education center for an expanded academic program, a
physical fitness building and a family counseling center for the boys, their
families, and residents of the Washington metropolitan area. This expansion
will permit YFT to counsel and teach nearly 100 boys per year, develop a family
counseling center and a community outreach program.
COMMENTS FROM COACH GIBBS
Founder and Chairman
"Youth For Tomorrow has moved beyond "the dream" to become a viable,
caring and dynamic "home" for young boys that most everybody had given up on
as lost causes. As we can demonstrate, other people's lost causes are our
special cases. Given a last chance, many boys display the courage to attain an
educational achievement level they never expected and a spiritual commitment
they never knew existed.
As important as the Redskins are to my career, these young boys at YFT
are important in my life. YFT was founded on the precept that those we
influence along the path of life will be the most important contribution we
leave behind.
I hope you will join me in this project."
