while the black children went to the Reno Colored School located behind
Deal. Even though the Reno community was integrated from the black
children at recess. She claimed it never occurred to any of the children,
from either school, to play together.

SCHOOL HISTORY
It is probably hard to imagine Fort Drive as a
one-block pathway ending in a cliff of muddy red clay when
Alice Deal Junior High opened its doors in 1931 to an eager
group of seventh and eighth graders. The students reached
the main entrance under the gleaming white tower by walking
on wooden planks Iaid across a sea of mud. There was no
landscaping at all around the school and only a few other
buildings nearby, the Reno Tower, Reno Elementary School
(the gray stucco structure still behind Deal) and a few
frame houses on the hill across the street. Wilson High
School had yet to be built. Deal graduates had to travel to
Georgetown to attend Western High School, now the Ellington
School of the Arts,
Alice Deal Junior High School, named for the principal
of the first Junior high school in Washington, was a much
smaller building then because only the center portion had
been built. There were no wings, no gymnasiums, and no
playground. The student body was small enough so that the
principal, Miss Bertie Backus, Knew each pupil by name.
Everyone ate together in the cafeteria at the same time at
smalletables decorated with flowers. There was one main
cook who served her own pastries with the home cooked meals.
No one left the campus during lunch time.
The auditorium doubled as a gymnasium because it was
constructed with a flat floor reached by descending several
steps from the lobby. There were also playrooms on either
side of the cafeteria which provided areas for physical
education activities.
The library was in what is now 200 A and B. It was to
be moved twice before being located in its present area.
The book room was small also, as was the nurse's office
(hardly a health suite).
The new school lacked much in equipment of every type,
but the students had a marvelous opportunity for creation
which would quickly become traditions. There were contests
for everything - with the world to choose from for ideas,
The school colons (garnett and gold), the motto, the design
of the seal, the lyrics for the school songs, the name and
shape of the yearbook, selection of the first landscape
planting -- all were the result of students efforts and
desires. The yearbook, for example, was the Square Deal and
was square in shape until 1969. The newspaper was called
the Deal Light when It won the Columbia Press Award for
student newspapers. Both names were the result of contests
among the students.

The first wing built was the present east wing with the
boy's gymnasium inconveniently placed on the third floor.
The additional wing was necessary to accommodate an ever
growing student body which graduated its first class in
February, 1933. By then the overflow of pupils caused four
teachers to take their social studios and mathmatics classes
to Murch School for space.
Before World War II broke out in Europe, the west
wing was added. By then the auditorim designed had been
changed to its current shape with sloping floor and
permanent seats. English classes performed Shakespeare in
it for assemblies each advisory (.a six week period). Other
assemblies were held approximately once a week, usually from
material written by teachers and students. The larger
student body required that only half of the pupils could
occupy the auditorium at 4 time. Similarly, there were two
lunch periods necessary. Each was only thirty minutes long.
Sometimes assemblies were held in the alternate period or
there were club activities: The playground had been
constructed, and intramurals were often held at noon.
The war changed many things at Deal. Most of the men
teachers left for military service. Women teachers rose to
the challenge. Some left for military service also. Those
who remained taught boys physical education and shop classes
quite well. There was & shortage of teachers and supplies
but not students! Classes were often as large as sixty and
sometimes two classes in different subjects were taught in
the same roon by one teacher. The pupils assisted in the
wartime activities by helping the teachers with food and gas
rationing duties and collecting useful materials to purchase
needed supplies, The tower was manned at night by teachers
as airplane spotters since Fort Reno is one of the highest
spots in Washington. There were frequent air raid drills
and the collection of emergency supplies in the tunnel
beneath the school.
From the beginning Deal was & school with an
international flavor because many diplomats sent their
children here. The number increased during the war years,
and later, after intergration, Alice Deal became truly an
International school. It was among the first to provide
social instruction for youngsters who knew little English.
It earned the recognition of the Unites Nations over twenty
years ago for a pageant created by Deal teachers and
performed by students who were natives of nearly every
nation then in the United Nation.
In an effort to create smaller classes and to provide
additional library, art and music space, the first floor of
the west wing extension was built. For several years it
jutted out into the field looking strangely flat and long.

The other two floors were added nine years ago, and Deal
assumed its present shape.
The school seems old, indeed, to the present student
body. It is true that much of the building has taken on a
dignified shabbiness with age. Some areas seem old fasholon
- but there are wonderful memories like friendly ghosts in
the old halls. Listen sometimes in the main hall and
perhaps you'll hear the laughter of the proud pupils who
autographed the acoustical tile in the celling as their
paper collections helped to purchase it. Be still in the
gymnasium and maybe you 11 hear the music of the weekly
Friday Night Club dances with vaudeville acts performed by
sections. Look at the old scrapbooks in the library; ask a
second or third generation student if his parent remembers
building the floats which paraded at each annual Deal
Matinee. One old timer might tell you about the night
several hundred students were stranded during a blizzard -
but here it is 1978.
Enough of the past. It gave us worthy goals and
standards to aim for, it is true. But each September is a
brand new year, writing for creations and ideas - yours!

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

WASHINGTON D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. Bush:
My name is Quentin Froemke and I attend the ninth grade at
Poynter Jr. High. My government class has to wright a letter to
you about some problems that we think are important. I think that
the environment and energy are important so I will write about
them.
I have read a lot of National Geographic magazines and they
recently had an article on the impending energy crisis. That
article informed me on many things about energy and changed my
opinion on some topics. For instance now I think that we should
be exploring new types of energy instead of nuclear power and
fossil fuels. Out here in Oregon we have lots of Hydroelectric
power which I think is the type I know of so far. It doesn't
pollute the environment and produces no harmful waste material. I
have also heard some where that right now we are using fission
for our nuclear power, but that if fusion were being used it
would not create nuclear waste and would produce far more energy.
The old types of power plants use fossil fuels and that
should be stopped as soon as possible to preserve the environment
and lessen our dependence on foreign countries for oil. Nuclear
power should also be discouraged where other sources of power
could be found. On the good side it produces lots of energy and
does not pollute directly. On the other hand it produces nuclear
waste and 50 far as I have heard the best way to dispose of it is
to put in an underground cave and let it sit there for a few
hundred-thousand years. (I heard they were doing this in Sweden.)
This does not sound like a very good solution since no matter
what precautions anyone takes there is always a chance for leaks.
Another reason I do not think nuclear plants are so hot (pun
intended) is that they can have a meltdown like at Chernobyl and
three mile island. This would be a major disaster and would screw
everything up for quite a while.
Now that you think I'm done I've got more to say about the
environment. The first thing that should be done is that there
should be some type of substitute for cars. They produce a lot of
gases that pollute the atmosphere. There should also be stricter
regulations on factories. They also produce a lot of pollution in
the larger cities.
I have also thought that there should be more parks. In
Oregon it seems like have parks up the kazoo but there are still
not enough. We should every scrap of undeveloped land turned in
to parks. Also, when someone comes into an area to cut it they
should have to plant new trees immediately, not one or two years
later. (Even though it is most likely 10 years)
Even if you do not get this letter I appreciate your time.

Dear Mr. Bush :
I am a 9th grade student in high school. I was wondering if you
could answer a few questions I have? I hear on the news all the
time that we are in a recession. If so then why are we always
giving money away? I understand that to help people in need is
great and I believe it is good-to an extent not to extremes! Now
the U.S.S.R. is breaking up. I'm glad they are free but by breaking
up there is a possibility that the outcome will be a group of poor
nations. Again we will feed, give money to, and help. How many millions
and billions of dollars go to other countries? The U.S. is a powerful
and helpful country but do we have to help everyone can't we just
help some? If we don't have enough money why are we giving what we
have away? I just wanted to ask. I would appreciate if you could
answer my questions. Thank you for reading my letter.
Sincerely
Pamela Herbert

Dear Mr. President,
My name is Lauren Fajkowski and I live in Phoenix, Arizona.
I am 5 years old and one of your biggest fans. I would like to
meet you on your upconing trip to Arizona.
I would like to ask your advise on becoming Ambassador to
Mexico. I have taken 2 years of Spanish and my parents take me
to Mexico (Rocky Point) 3 or 4 times a year. I get to practice
my spanish with my friend at the bakery in town.
I attend Monetssori School and have been working very hard
to memorize all the States and their Capitals this summer. I
already know the seven continents, addition and subtraction (but)
I can't carry over yet); and, I read almost a book a day.
Perhaps when I get a little older I can do something to help
you in your job. I would like to work for you.
I know you are a very busy man, my Daddy is a President too
and he is very busy, thankyou for taking the time for me.
LAUREN

Dear Mr. President,
I am Jane Johnston
writing to you from Louisvilu, CO.
I am writing to you about the
environ ment.
To me, l think youve Failed
as a president because you haven't
put barley any of your job to
work on the environment. I've
heard the story about a a girl, Melissa
She had toput Up a banner because
Poe, writing you aletter but instear
you wouldn't listen to her letter. well
you better listen to this letter!
First of all you are letting
people cut down all These old 200
year forests. Youve 644 it all
for the demon straters to decide
the fale of the forest. well its
not fair for the demonstraters
to handle the taok on their own!
Then l think you
should make it a law to
recycle and to help put more
recycling booths across the
nation. Did you know that
every ton or recycled paper
saves 7,000 gallons of wafer?
The U.S only recycles 10% of
its trash, butchina vecycles
a 50% amout of their trash !
Why cant our figures match UD
or at least be better ?
Well ve think that yer
just need to work alittle
harder on the environmental
onea.
Thankyou,
Jane Johnston
