This traditional event and the resultant media coverage are a genuine inspiration to our volunteers and staff throughout the nation as well as to disabled children and adults who receive Easter Seal rehabilitation services each year. It is our hope that you will grant us the privilege of calling on you again this year just prior to our National Ramp daff Telethon which will take place March 2 & 3. Members of the Easter Seal delegation wishing to meet with you are: Pat Boone, Easter Seal's Campaign Chairman and Telethon Host; Bridget Houlihan of Denver, Colorado the 1991 National Easter Seal Child, and Cyndee Pearson of Vancouver, Washington the 1991 Easter Seal Adult representative. Easter Seal Societies nationwide join me in hoping you will find it possible to grant this appointment request. The Power To Overcome News Service CONTACT: Sara Brewster Assistant Vice President Communications 312.726.6200 Bridget Houlihan from Denver, Colorado named 1991 National Easter Seal Child Easter Seals Bridget Houlihan, a bubbly redhead from Denver, Colorado, will serve as the 1991 National Easter Seal Child. Born with cerebral palsy, Houlihan is now twelve and a seventh-grade honor student and student council member in her mainstreamed middle school. For the past three summers, Bridget has been an enthusiastic camper at the Colorado Easter Seal Society's Rocky Mountain Village, located outside of Denver. Although she admits to being somewhat hesitant before going to camp the first time, Bridget and her parents attribute much of her growing independence to the confidence she's built as a leader and adventurer at camp. As an Easter Seal camper, Bridget has had outdoor experiences that would impress most young people. She's traversed rivers, gone white-water rafting and learned some of the basics of moutaineering, including how to rope climb lofty mountain pines. In her spare time at home, Bridget rides her adapted bike with friends, enjoys her doll collection, watches movies, and listens to her favorite oldies on the radio. Bridget was born two months prematurely. As an infant, her parents expected some developmental delays but did not suspect that she had cerebral palsy until she was eleven months. Today, Bridget uses a wheelchair and a walker for improved mobility -- at school and at home. Bridget lives with her parents and Grady, her golden retriever. She says she hopes to become a teacher -- like her mother -- and go to Princeton someday. In the meantime, she has three wishes. First, she says, "I want to be able to walk. And I hope to be really successful as a grown up, and help open shelters for homeless people.' Pearson works as a pharmacy assistant for Safeway Inc. in Vancouver. She's a wife and mother to 67 8-year-old Tony and 3-year-old Natalee. She's also an active member of the Oregon Easter Seal Society's post-polio support group. Pearson had polio as an infant and her left leg is paralyzed as a result. Easter Seals' post-polio support group has helped Cyndee to better deal with the very specific medical issues that she needs to address as a polio survivor. For Cyndee, this has meant developing a better understanding of how important diet and exercise are for her to continue doing all of the things that she enjoys on her own and with her family. With the assistance of the Oregon Easter Seal Society, she is now using an electric scooter to preserve her energy over long days at work and at home. The Washington Easter Seal Society helped her to adapt the trunk of her car with an electric lift, that enables her to load and unload her scooter. Communications National Easter Seal Society 70 East Lake Street Chicago, Illinois 60601 (more) 312 726.6200 (phone) 312 726.4258 (TDD) 312 726.1494 (fax) Cyndee Pearson, 1991 National Easter Seal Adult Representative Ad 1 Pearson became involved with Easter Seals through her husband Dana, who is assistant manager at another Vancouver, Wash. area Safeway store. Dana Pearson had an equally personal reason for his support of Easter Seal. He explains, "After Cyndee's experience with polio as a child, and watching her deal with post-polio syndrome in the last few years, I really wanted to help." When Dana Pearson was selected by Safeway to appear on the 1988 National Easter Seal Telethon in Los Angeles, Cyndee accompanied him and learned about Easter Seals' post-polio support program in Portland, Oregon. She's been an active member of the group for the last two years. And, with the group, she continues to explore the options available to her as an adult with post-polio syndrome. Early research and identification of post-polio syndrome was funded by the Easter Seal Research Foundation. At Easter Seals' urging, post polio syndrome was recognized by the American Medical Association in its 1989 meetings. It describes the muscle and bone degeneration that adults, who had polio as children, often begin to experience some 20 to 30 years after learning to adapt to their initial paralysis. Cyndee Pearson is among some 300,000 adults in the United States with post-polio syndrome. (more) Cyndee Pearson, 1991 National Easter Seal Adult Representative Ad 2 For Cyndee, living with post-polio syndrome has meant learning to pace herself to keep from becoming physically exhausted. Always energetic, Pearson now uses an electric scooter to move around in large areas -- in the Safeway Store or to accompany her family to the neighborhood park and county fairs. Pearson is quick to point out that the scooter has changed her life. "I'm still discovering things that I'd let go, because I was becoming so tired. Now I can go to Little League baseball games with Tony again, and take Natalee to the park. I'm also shopping again. And, when I get home, I have the energy to sew and quilt. It's great." Cyndee worked with her manager and pharmacist-boss to adapt her workspace at Safeway Stores to allow her access to pharmacy shelves from her rolling chair, and grab bars that help her navigate stairs. She's also done the same in her home -- working with her husband to make everyday tasks easier to accomplish from a chair she uses to roll around her kitchen. Cyndee Pearson is an independent, accomplished woman of the 1990's. She balances her job and family, and is working hard to promote an awareness of post-polio syndrome and support Easter Seal programs and services for people of all ages and disabilities. ### THE WHITE HOUSE Helen WASHINGTON MEMORANDUM TO: David Demarest FROM: KATHY SUPER SUBJECT: APPROVED PRESIDENTIAL ACTIVITY EVENT: Photo Opportunity with the National Easter Seal Child DATE: Thursday, February 21, 1991 TIME: 11:00 a.m. DURATION: 5 minutes 11:5 town most LOCATION: Oval Office ATTIRE: Business suit REMARKS REQUIRED: No MEDIA COVERAGE: White House Photographer Only FIRST LADY Is Invited PARTICIPATION: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: CONTACT: , TELEPHONE: OFFICE HOME NOTE: PROJECT OFFICER, SEE ATTACHED CHECKLIST Ed Rogers Marlin Fitzwater Ede Holiday Philip Brady David Demarest David Valdez Fred McClure Fran Norris USSS PPD Susan Porter Rose Sig Rogich Gary Walters Patty Presock John Keller WHCA Audio/Visual Chriss Winston Bruce Caughman WHCA Operations Laurie Firestone J.
