O. Box 191 Lincolndale, NY 10540 October 22, 1991 The President The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D. C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: I strongly oppose federal tax funding for abortions for the reasons below: An abortion is NOT a women's rights issue. It IS a moral issue, with no religious connotation. It is based on human ethics and one's conscience. A woman should not have the right to abort a life at will; she does possess the right and obligation to prevent such a catastrophic occurrence, very basic and simple. I am a strong believer in preventive medicine. As a male, I have been an advocate for women's rights long before the national movement. Women's morals have been denied and violated by unscrupulous female activists, blinded by misconception, deceit, power and by irresponsible leaders under the banner of "women's rights". The lack of self control, abstention and/or the use of contraceptives is grossly irresponsible and degrading; it proves one merely succumbs to an act of animal impulse rather than the use of man's/woman's super human intellect. Sad isn't it! In any event, I strongly oppose any of my tax dollars being used to encourage individuals to acquiesce to their sexual follies and selfish gratification by providing a free ride. I am referring to women who have engaged in singular or multiple abortions within a year or two. Since abortion has become legal, though immoral, and these individuals enjoy this lifestyle of promiscuity, passion and the follies that go along with it, let them pay their own price tag and not the murder. moral, conscientious tax payer who would technically become an accessory to I believe all legislators should take a hard intellectual look at this simple degrading situation. One does not need to be an intellect to come to a healthy conclusion. It is not the male in this case playing the role of the devil's advocate, but the women's movement itself that is responsible by irresponsible leaders under the guise of women's rights. Respectfully yours, Joseph J. Porcelli 16 SAG122 Gerard J. Valk 7 Old Quarry Road Cedar Grove, New Jersey 07009 October 29, 1991 President George Bush The White House Washington, D.C. Dear President Bush: I am not the usual "letter-writer" to elected public officials, however my concern regarding the current economic crisis in our land has reached a level that it can no longer be contained. I, and (I think) almost all of the American people believe in the American political system. It has become increasingly more obvious that we can't believe in most of our politicians. Recent events in the Congress and Sénate clearly indicate to us that these great governing bodies may be incapable of dealing with the enormous issues of the 1990s. We have seen that their primary concerns have been political positioning, satisfying special interest groups, disruption of the normal process of government, and an over-riding effort to be re-elected. We, the People, have a distinct sense that government is no longer of the people, by the people, and certainly not for the people. The general good of the people no longer seems to be the primary concern of our government. If it were so, there would be a clear indication to us that our very real needs are being addressed and solutions to our problems are being sought. If the United States is to continue to be a vital world influence for democracy and the free-enterprize form of government, it is essential that we get our own economic house in order. The day-to-day monetary crisis that we are facing in this great rich country of ours seems to be understood and evident to everyone in the land, except our government. With each passing day, the reports of additional lay-offs, and projected cutbacks in industry and government only add to the lack of fiscal confidence we already feel. October 29, 1991 President George Bush Page Two I would, sincerely, propose that the time has come to hear us, the America people; and not the "advisors and experts" whose views and opinions do not seem to reflect the real crisis we are facing. Basic economic principals tell us that our Cities, our States, our Social and Cultural Agencies, our Educational System, our Health System, our Financial Institutions and our individual families are in very deep fiscal trouble. Mr. President, you and your staff were absolutely brilliant in dealing with the Iraq and Kuwait crisis. Please address this crisis with as much urgency, expertise, and commitment. The stability of the MiddleEast is important, the financial stability and security of the United States of America is far more important. Sincerely and faithfully yours, Gerard J. Valk 51 smc. 122A-N 9601 Burke Lake Rd P.O. Box 276 Burke, VA 22009-0276 October 27, 1991 President George Bush The White House Washington DC, 20500 Dear Mr. President, I am writing to urge you to act now to get our economy back on track. You have shown the brilliant leadership and political courage necessary to orchestrate a new world order not imagined possible a few years ago and stood firm with your conscience on numerous devisive domestic issues. This same leadership must be brought to bear now with equal force and courage to revitalize our national economy. A recent poll finds the approval rating for your handling of the economy dropping from 65% to 55%. The same newscaster yesterday stated that over 500,000 more Americans applied for unemployment benefits. It seems you are the scapegoat for the nations ills. While this is not a new phenomenon, it concerns me greatly that if there is no turn around in our economy, then in the next election, the country will elect a liberal Democrat who espouses a national "give away" program which will only plunge this country into further economic impotence. It is evident to me that we are paying now for the overindulgences and short sighted fiscal management of the 1980s. And now there is more than a malaise in our economic activity but a growing fear of grasping for our own bootstraps. It has become the common cry in the news media, in the Congress and by many spokesman to blame the federal government for our ills and demand compensation. Extending unemployment benefits and tax cuts are not remedies. On the contrary they are irresponsible political gimmicks. I urge you to embark upon a national program to rebuild in the neighborhoods across our country the capacity and confidence to be self- sufficient and survive. There are many examples already of citizen groups taking control of their neighborhoods and rebuilding safe communities where economic opportunities can flourish. We need more and more of these. Yes, these efforts need government help at every level. Among other things they need effective law enforcement and a responsive judicial system. Tax incentives to encourage capital investment and small business ventures are also essential. And our people need to have access to health care the is responsive and affordable. Perhaps most important however, is the need for Americans to know and believe we are our brother's keeper. Further than belief, we must reach out and act. I am an older citizen who, after 30 years in the military, have embarked upon a second career. It has allowed me to become active in my community. I am overwhelmed with the number of non-profit volunteer groups who are reaching out to the needy in their neighborhoods. We must capture this precious exercise of the American spirit and champion its application everywhere. While hard times for some will always exist and we can never eliminate all of the tragedies that devastate many of our people, we can and must learn how to help ourself and survive. Mr. President, as you awakened our national conscience in support for our troops in the Gulf, SO we need to be stirred again. This time its more difficult and the risks are greater. But I see nowhere on the horizon no other person with the capacity, vision or courage to make the effort. It is essential that you be re-elected next year but you must start now to champion the solutions to our domestic crises to have a chance. I wish you every success and if I can be of any assistance in this endeavor, please call on me. Sincerely Craig A. Preston LAW OFFICES OF DAVID B. KESLER, P.A. 65 SIXTY FIFTH STREET SOUTH ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA 33707 (813) 347-3109 DAVID B. KESLER November 4, 1991 TELEPHONE 347-3109 GEORGE H. BROWN AREA CODE 813 A. MARION FINKLEA President George Bush The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, DC 20500 RE: Dear President Bush: My name is David B. Kesler. I am a practicing attorney in St. Petersburg, Florida, where I have maintained my own private practice for approximately 17 years. I, personally, have been fortunate enough to have made a good living throughout that 17 year period and, with God's will, anticipate continued good fortune in the future. My purpose for writing you, however, is not to speak about myself but to address what I consider to be a significant and potentially disastrous problem with the State of our Country, i.e., the economic crisis which we are presently experiencing and which, unless, logical and reasonable minds prevail, will continue to undermine the very fabric of this wonderful Nation. Mr. President, I am neither a brilliant economist nor trained in the nuances of the political chess game between the legislative and executive branches of government but I do know that something must be done about the stagnant state of our economy. What I have to propose is neither a reduction in taxation or an increase in taxation. I would respectfully submit that a very valid solution to a material portion of our economic ills could be accomplished via restoration of the interest deduction which was, for reasons unexplainable, eliminated in the tax reform act which we are presently laboring under. I would ask that the executive and legislative branches of our government unite to restore the interest deduction which would unilaterally stimulate the economy in that it would stimulate consumer spending, i.e. the citizen with a little bit of extra money would not be hesitant to invest in additional real estate; the consumer would not be hesitant to buy a second or a third car; the consumer would not be hesitant to buy that washer or dryer that he has been putting off purchasing because without the interest deduction, an amortization on an installment loan contract would be economically non-feasible, etc. President George Bush Page Two November 4, 1991 Restoration of a tax deduction which made abundant common sense would not be loaded with all the political repercussions of either a tax decrease or a tax increase. What this country needs is a renewed vigor and confidence by those who make this country work, the average man. This average man cannot and will not place its faith in its dollars in a country which does not reciprocate via tax savings in exchange. I realize that this letter will probably fall on deaf ears or will be discarded because of the factionalism which plagues our country at this time and essentially renders any meaningful legislation improbable. However, I feel better for having voiced my feelings and being a relatively apolitical person, at least can sleep better at night knowing that I have at least made you aware of what I consider to be a gross oversight on behalf of those responsible for the tax planning of our country. Hopefully you will consider my humble and probably under- informed suggestion. Sincerely yours, /pec David B. Kesler SAG 1 November 5, 1991 Robert T. Farley 2830-D Fisher Road Columbus, Ohio 43204 THE HONORABLE GEORGE BUSH, PRESIDENT THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON, D. C. Ref: Economic Disaster and The American Middle Class Sir: Recently, 40,000 Americans showed up on the steps of the State House in Connecticut to protest a proposed tax increase proposed by Republican Governor Lowell Weicker. They were in a very foul mood. Those 40,000 persons were American Middle Class persons and that number is 1.5 % of the population of Connecticut. By way of comparison, this would be the same as 3.8 million Americans showing up in front of The White House to protest the government handling of this recession. I include the scandalous U. S. Congress as part of the group of governors who have caused the length and depth of this recession. Don't laugh. This could happen shortly, and this will not be the desperate pitter patter of welfare feet on your door. These people will all be the American Middle Class. Sound impossible ? It sounded impossible to Gov. Weicker also, until they all showed up. Contrary to the advice of Mr. Brady and Mr. Darman, this country is in very bad shape and getting worse every week. Believe it ! If Gov. Weicker thought the mood of this crowd was nasty, I assure you it will get a whole lot worse in the near future. Forget the government statistics ! Send some people out into the country and start talking to working people if you really want to know what is going on. Worred that the people who represent are taking care of themselves THE HONORABLE GEORGE BUSH - 2 Robert T. Farley November 5, 1991 We in business know that everyway you cut this thing could be inflationary, but some things could be done immediately. This nation needs highways and bridges now and forever. Every DOT of every state in this nation has plans on the shelf that could be turned into jobs within 90 days. And highways pay for themselves in many ways too numerous to list here. Thirty days to brush up plans, 30 days to advertise, and 30 days to award contracts and you have a lot of people working in about 90 days ! I am not a highway contractor, nor am I even associated with the highway construction industry, but I'll tell you something Mr. President. A little inflation resulting from a limited highway program that is launched immediately would be a lot better than blood in the streets. If this recession continues at the present depth, I predict that is what you will be seeing shortly, not from the protests of desperate welfare recipients, but from the American Middle Class. There are a lot of us Mr. President. Most of us are smart, well educated, and we have long memories. Right now, we're all scared to death. You can do something about getting this country moving and it is your sworn duty to try. Scrub all the foreign trips and start working on this economy. We have been in a deep recession since May of 1990 for no good reason except bad governing. It's time to turn it around and we would all like to do that without riots and blood in the streets. We all request that you do SO starting now. Very truly, Robert T. Fakley Encls. - Reading Material CC: The Hon. Chalmers P. Wylie, MC The Hon. DI FIORE 499 DENNY COURT BOCA RATON, FL 33486 President George Bush The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President, I am writing this letter in the hope that you may come to realize how the citizens of this country believe that you have become out of step with what is really happening as regards the economy and this country's future It has become fairly obvious to most people that you do not have first hand knowledge of the economic plight many are in. I am not talking about statistics, nor about what your advisors are telling you. I mean knowing family or friends who are out of work or in financial trouble, and have nowhere to turn. The impression is that you have become to isolated from the people. The depression was caused primarily because the president in office at the time, believed as you do, that everything would work out. He too was far removed reality and from the people. The depression was caused by people losing confidence in government, in banks, and in businesses. The depression was also caused by people with money not spending that money. Spending, meaning investing in new businesses or expanding existing businesses in this country, not by buying boats and cars. This is why reducing the capital gains tax won't work. Those who benefit would only buy bonds. They would not start new businesses! Since it will take at least nine months to effectively turn the economy around, any delay on your part will prove disastrous at election time. The democrats are just waiting. They sense weakness! How to turn the country around? First, stop the layoffs by providing tax incentives to those companies affected. Second, restore the tax incentives to stimulate investment in businesses, particularly to have industries return to this country. Third, restore the public's confidence in America. Start promoting American products. Stop hurting businesses in the guise of envionmental laws. A perfect example is the mileage requirement for automobile manufacturers. Pollution yes, but mileage no! What we have done is to play into the hands of the Japanese. Another example is the current flap over so called wetlands. Fourth, change your top people. Show that you are gearing up to the new conditions. You give the appearance of being surrounded by yes men and a staff more geared to promoting a political philosophy than to solving the problems of this country. No one recognizes the names of your cabinet, much less knowing what they stand for or against. Put together a new team as you did for the Iraq war. Give the team directions, but let them carry the ball. Delegate!!!!!!!! Fifth, stop going to Camp David on weekends and start. walking around America. Especially the cities! Sixth, stop the giveaway programs, stop spending money on any program unless that program is to stimulate business investment or research. Stop grants to colleges except those for research into new products. Seventh, stop the current process of cutting defense spending. Instead encourage those companies to expand into non weapon research and products. Most modern products were the result of defense spending. Create a program such as the Marshall States. Plan, not for other nations, but for the United Eighth, stop spending so much time on foreign affairs. Cool it! Stop taking positions on Israel! Ninth, stop protecting other countries economies and start protecting America. Tenth, start spending on those programs which will have an immediate effect. Not tax reductions, not give aways, but spending on infrastructure, housing, and business. Eleventh, rethink your stand on narcotics. Start thinking of decriminalizing. Twelfth, instead of having press conferences, start some type of fireside chat with the American people. Talk to us. Let us talk to you. These, and of course many other steps, are mainly to promote the morale of our people. Copy the tactics of the Iraq war. Why was it so successful? Because everyone took part and the whole country was united in purpose!. Everyone had family or friends involved in the conflict. So, you must somehow get everyone involved in restoring the United States to its former greatness! The United States is on the threshold of a new great adventure. Become the leader!!!! Good luck and God Bless. Sincerely, Bob Dr Liois P.S. I hope you read this! TR Smg:122A,N 928 Pine Baugh Street Rockledge, Florida, 32955 October 21, 1991 President George Bush The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: I am a thirty year old police detective employed by the Cocoa Beach Police Department in Florida. My wife, Tracey, is a registered nurse and works for an Orthopaedic Surgeon's Office. Tracey and my combined income this year will total approximately $50,000. We are Presbyterian and belong to a local church. We are both registered voters, and come from middle class families, a heritage which we are proud of. unfortunately, both of have noticed a deterioration in the ability for us to make ends meet. This we believe to be a result of an unfair burden that is being placed upon the middle class American. Unfortunately, both of us 52e that things are markedly different today than they were when our parents were starting their families. OUI parents were able to purchase their homes and have childeren with only one wage earner in the family. Both of our mother's stayed home and raised the children, something that was not uncommon back then, but is increasingly rare today. My wife and I would not have been able to purchase a home unless we were both working. And even though we would like to have children, taxes and inflation have erroded our income to the point that we ve concluded that Tracey will have to maintain her employment if we are going to have children and keep our home. This means that our children will likely be raised by strangers in day care, a thought that disturbs me greatly. Mr. President, I've heard you speak of the things you believe that America will need to do to be competitive in tomorrows world market. One of your proposals is to improve our education system, which you believe will increase our childrens math and science scores 50 that we will have a better educated work force to handle high tech jobs. This is not only due to a failure of schools to educate our children, but is also the result of a deterioration of the home life of children. Mr. President, I believe that it is the breakdown of the economic security of the American middle class family that is at the heart of the economic and social problems we are experiencing in our country today. It does not take a genius to realize that children who are not raised by their mothers and fathers in a stable home atmosphere are not going to be quality students, and later quality employees. Homes with both parents working are also homes too tired to devote the time and energy to the nuture of their children. And what kind of nuturing are the children receiving from the strangers in day care.? Very little, I'm sure. This, of course, leaves a lot of doubt about whether it is worth it to have children in a nation that seems to be discouraging the traditional family. I believe this feeling, which is a major concern of many of our peer group, has got to be the biggest threat to economic security this country has ever faced. And what have you as President of the United States proposed to do about it? You want a cut in the capital gains tax for the rich to spur economic activity, in hopes that it will end the recession. Mr. President, the problem is far deeper than just the end of this recession and needs to be addressed. How about this for a new concept: a tax cut for the middle class American family to help spur economic activity? Mr. President, the wealthy are already rich and just waiting for the right time to invest in profit making enterprises. Banks are poised to loan money to businesses and would be entrepreneurs, but won't until the economy is strong. This recession is caused by an assault on the middle class American families spending power, due to the unfair burden it carries in taxes. Please Mr President, the middle class American needs some relief. I've written you this letter, Mr. President, because I feel that my wife and I part of an endangered species. A species of American citizens that are threatened with extinction if care is not taken to protect us. This species is commonly referred to as the American middle class, the backbone of our society. And Mr President, without a strong backbone, we will surely perish as a nation. Mr. President, I urge you to address this economic crisis of the middle class American, before it is too late. Sincerely, Buyan Ho Gres Bryan D. Holmes Horio Realty Company, Inc COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT FARMS AND LAND FOR INVESTMENT SMG 122A N to 401 COOPER LANDING RD. CHERRY HILL, NJ 08002 (609) 667-1394 November 4, 1991 The President The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President, I see our country slowly sliding into a deeper recession. The Congress and the Administration are playing politics and not doing what they should be doing to stimulate the economy by helping (basically) the Middle Class, to create jobs, help the sales of homes, cars, gifts for Christmas / etc. etc.. What I am about to suggest (I believe) does not need legislation, but can be accomplished by Executive Fiat. Here goes; An immediate (way before Christmas) Window of Opportunity (not to last more than thirty (30) days) for people to withdraw monies from their I.R.A. Accounts for the previously mentioned uses, or for any other use they might want, WITHOUT PENALTY of ANY KIND and TAX FREE. This would create an immediate transfusion of monies into the economy. It would spark buying, selling, investments, consolidation of debts, etc.. The opportunity for this move should be limited to an exact period of time. I am ecstatic thinking of the immediate reaction to this move. Stockbrokers, newlyweds who want a home, home builders, car manufacturers, salesmen, etc. etc., all screaming "Hallelujah" to the flurry of sales which would also help the States with sales tax income and regular income from income tax. A Double Whammy. Mr. President, DO IT NOW, before we precipitate in the muck and mire of a full blown recession or even worse. Respectfully Submitted, Albert Florio, Jr. 19 E. I write to share with you my feeling that this fact is in considerable measure due to the increasing inability of Americans to afford the high costs of doing business at all I fear that Capitalism and perhaps Democracy itself is being stifled by a bureaucracy so complex and burdensome that initiative and creativity are denied room to maneuver and assert themselves. Add to this the difficulties inherent in our highly complex tax laws; the tremendous costs of insurance, legal fees and liability protection and I am bound to wonder about sustaining such a system, never mind proving ourselves "cost effective", in world markets. The solution, as I think you may share with me, lies in drastically simplifying our tax structure, and allowing those who to make some money to keep more of what they earn; of addressing the high costs of our legal system; of encouraging government to assist people towards success, rather than (it sometimes seems) punishing them for it; of revising our attitude towards "welfare", in order to get people who are essentially on a "dole" away from that and into lives of creative earning for themselves and their families. These are great goals, and I realize such changes of attitude, on the governments part, are not easy to achieve, especially given congressional bias at present. You have my support, and my hopes that you will be an even stronger proponent for the American people with respect to the above items. They are as important to our nation's continuing success as any I can otherwise identify. Sincerely yours, Charlesmore Charles E. Moore, M.D. CEM/cn 29 smb- 122A-n Lois A. Stailing 18 Roosevelt Street So. Portland ME 0410 October 27, 1991 President George W. Bush The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington DC 20500 Dear President Bush: Loss of jobs is reaching a critical level in Maine and I am extremely concerned for our future. The construction industry has been particularly hard hit. Falling construction also effects 50 many other sectors of the economy such as construction materials, appliances, carpeting and all allied building trades, to name just a few. In addition, housing costs are beyond the reach of the lower and middle classes now in Maine where the average home costs at least $100,000. And many roads and bridges are in deplorable condition. We need jobs; we need money being spent in the economy; state and local governments need revenue from taxes and fees; construction and related sectors of the economy need a boost. We need low-cost housing. It would not seem unreasonable to look to our government for help. After all, our government exists - in theory only? - for the good of everyone. Our government should do something to help us. This citizen/taxpayer is humbly suggesting a plan. Why can't our government fund a massive nationwide employment program to build low-cost housing and repair our infrastructure? This would create jobs so that citizens would have money to spend to fuel the economy and pay revenues to local, state and federal governments. Roads and bridges could be repaired and we could obtain badly needed low-cost housing. The multiplier effect could be significant with many, many industries and sectors of the economy benefiting. Why could we not use land and equipment now owned by the government from the S&L bailout? Why could we not use land on military bases that are closing? If action is not taken soon to alleviate our skyrocketing unemployment, we will be in a depression to rival that of the 30's. Those of you in power must step out of your ivory towers into reality and open your eyes! Our government must do something to help its citizens! Very truly yours, 10 SMG-12ZA,N STEPHEN C. WALLACE 914 BATTERY LANE NASHVILLE, TENN. 37220 0-292-6360 H-383-2089 OCTOBER 22, 1991 President George Bush The White House Washington, D. C. 20505 Dear Sir, I am a small businessman, a homebuilder, and trying to make a living in the economy that has been forced on us. Congress can give all the tax cuts they want, but if they do not get investors and business back into investing, creating new jobs, building, and creating a climate of business activity, our economy will continue to decline. I speak from the experience of having to survive in the mess congress created with the 1981 deregulation of the savings and loans, and the 1986 tax reform they passed. It has been reported that 85% of the members of Congress had their tax Shelters exempted. The 1986 tax law as written by congress has caused the S & L. failures, bank failures, and insurance company problems we now face. The 1986 tax law has devalued real estate by taking depreciation from 19 years to 33 years and not allowing the full loan interest deduction. Congress has taken business and investors out of the expansion and building market. There is no advantage to own real estate for rental now, not until rents double. The 86 tax reform has taken the value out of real estate, and the investor out of the real estate market. Congress does not realize that one third of our real estate sales prior to 1986 were to investors. The home building industry AFFECTS 65% OF OUR ECONOMY. The 1986 tax reform has caused the majority of the S & L failures, the loss of more jobs than Congress knows, and we are not through with our downward spiral. The home building industry affects our economy in employement, service organizations, manufactoring, local supply and support business' their level of sales and employement. Our loss of tax dollars is directly due to the 86 tax reform. Now the stock market is being driven up by investors looking to place their funds somewhere to produce income, and the same thing will happen to that market as happened to our economy. Once Congress realizes that wealth that is invested creates jobs, sales, growth, and more tax dollars. Congress (especially the Democrats) are stupid to think they can take away the incentive to invest and have the same level of growth, employement, and taxes. I do not know if the republican members of congress can sell the democrats on changing the tax laws to accomodate growth. It will probably take an old converted democrat similar to me goading them into changing. Arbusing the working class in such a way to create an atmosphere SO uncomfortable that the democrats have to change. This economy will not jump start itself from tax cuts. Congress needs to get back home with the working people to know what the problem is, what their constituants think and feel, rather than making speeches. They need to move but of Washington every 4 to 6 years, then they won't become so useless and self serving. Sincerely, Stephen C. Your campaign is riding high on the victory. While it looks like you are heading for re-election, I'm sure you know that you cannot sustain the post-war "excitement" into the primaries and beyond. The purpose of this letter is to implore you to come to the people of this nation and ask for-everyone's help in repairing our domestic problems. Being a communication professional, I want to point out three indicators that show you are in a perfect position to make a long-lasting, positive impact on the United States of America: 1) Your approval rating is extremely high and has been for months. Most citizens will do anything you ask. 2) A recent study by The Wirthlin Group shows that 56 percent of Americans feel the country is "seriously off on the wrong track." Only three percent mention foreign policy as the nation's top problem (which has been the only focus of your administration). 3) The frenzy of celebrations in honor of returning troops indicates that people are hungry for ways to show support for their country. Many would do anything on behalf of this nation, but NOW is the time before this unprecedented patriotism turns sour. Please set your sights on healing America. Instead of trickling statements to us about what the government intends to do for the nation, here is an idea for you to help us heal ourselves: Develop a checklist that gives each of your 250 million constituents a part in improving our domestic problems. With the checklist in hand, address the nation. Follow up by making these checklists available to the public in every way imaginable. Below I have listed some of the simple tasks you can encourage Americans to perform. Each goal is attainable so that all Americans can end the year knowing we have met your wishes: 1) Carpool to work or take public transportation at least five times. 2) If you have children in school, meet with their teachers at least once. 3) Buy one blanket, coat or grocery bag of food this year for a homeless shelter. 4) Attend one meeting of your city, county or state government bodies. And the list can go on and on. I know the response will be great. When President Carter asked us to turn down our thermostats, everyone took part (and chastised neighbors who didn't). I don't consider myself a flag-waving American, but I, too, am looking for guidance from our national leaders. It would be great to end this healing campaign by asking all Americans to write to you with their thoughts on 1) the nation's strengths, 2) our weaknesses and 3) possible solutions. Assign a task force (journalism students?) to collect and screen the letters. The constructive input will overwhelm you and morale will soar because our President has asked for our views. I realize you have a staff to advise you on such matters and probably consider those who write letters like this to be at least a little strange. However, I am so anxious about our domestic problems that I had to contact you with an idea to make a difference. This county needs your attention. Help us to help ourselves become the nation you are bragging about to others. Sincerely, p-w-9-0 Lori Wengerd
