Rotary International has over one million members and
24,000 clubs in 160 countries. There are nearly
40,000 Rotarians in the United States. Royce Abbey
from Australia, is the President for 1988-89. Rotary
International recently raised 220 million dollars
worldwide for "Polio-Plus," a campaign to eliminate
polio and other diseases in foreign countries by means
of vaccine inoculations. Over 120 million dollars was
raised in the United States alone.

Each year the White House News Photographers Association
(W.H.N.P.A) holds a contest for its members to honor
outstanding achievement in their craft. Traditionally, the
winners of the contest are invited to the Oval Office for a
group photo with the President to be published in the
W.H.N.P.A. Annual Awards Magazine. The awards magazine is
distributed at the associations annual banquet honoring the
President and the First Lady to be held in May.

Bush came back at noon and spoke to pool for 20 minutes,
covering the FSX, grapes, automatic weapons, Cheney,
inflation, contras, Millie, sports
Dressed in an open-necked short, blue jacket and
slippers, the president said he had come for an "gentle
enquiry" about the state of the press.
On FSX: he said "no decison has been made, = an di
suggested there might be a meeting today, and weeke nd
talks with aides on the subject. He played down suggestions
that deal was going through, noting emphatically, "no decision
has been made.
Grapes: After Fitzwater told your pool HHS Sec't
Sullivan planned 1 pm news conference Baskx to lift ban
on Chilean produce, Bush said I was told we were going to

lighten up on that, and I think that's fine." Bush later
called the ban "a perfuce prudent action, adding, "It has-
caused some economic hardship and I regret that. = He said
the ban had not been an overreaction. It "worries me, 11 he
added, that terrorist actions can affect society SO easily.
Guns: Bush said administration decison this week
to
ban imports of semi-automatic weapons "represents
a heightened concern on my part about AK47s.'
Was a reversal of his stance on gun control ? "It's a
pulse change, 11 he said, grabbing his wrist. "We re enforcing
the law, incidentally, we're not changing the law. On the

Bush said, "I'm not going to differ with that decision.
He said the national debate on firearms had gotten "a little
bit" too hot APPING "We'll make our decisions in a cool
way We won t be swayed by the temper" of the debate.
He had no comment to reports that See Bennett plans other
restrictions on firearms.
Inflation : Bush responded to the rise in the PPI
***** saying "yu You have to be always vigilant
against inflation. He said the "best thing to do about it
is to get the budget defict down. 11 He said alt this point
he could not fault Congress, but said the figures should
be a "clarion call" for deficit action.

Cheny : He said he would like to go to the depar tment,

as he had with other nominees. "I'm very pleased about"
I'M very happy with the public reaction.
Contras: He said he had talked to Baker and Scowcroft
before leaving, and expected the issue would be awaiting his
return. He hinted he was ple with bipartisan support for
humanitarian aid:
