Immediately after the speech, the President shook hands, handed out cards,
kissed military wives and received words of encouragement from the assemblage.
At one point, the President took an auto-focus camera from a women in the crowd
and attempted to take a picture of himself and her standing together. The effort &
was to no avail, so the President handed the camera to a nearby Secret Service agent,
who snapped the shot. He was handed a t-shirt with a camel on it and the slogan,
"Iraqi mobile SCUD launcher."
Before leaving the base, the President toured the aircraft, at one point climbing
F/A-18
inside a C-130 transport plane and surveying the cockpit of an AV-8B
fighter
jet. Asked by a reporter "What do you think of Saddam massing in the South," the
President replied, "He's making a big mistake."
For military buffs, the President saw two tanks, an AAV (Assault Amphibious
Vehicle) and an LAV (light armored fehicle), an F/A-18 fighter jet, and four
helicopters--a UH-1N "Huey", an AH-1W "Cobra", a CH-53D "Sea I Stallion", a CH46E
"Sea Knight."

Marlin, when asked about recent events in South Africa, said, "We welcome the move
by President D e Klerk of South Africa. We'll wait for the parliament to act and
then we'll see. It certainly appears to take a big step in the right direction
towards meeting the conditions" (for lifting the sanctions.)

SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE PARK PICNIC
GOLDSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA
February 1, 1991
Lots of color. Little news. Brent Scowcroft, asked by your pool
why he thought the Iraqis had crossed the border and engaged U.S.
troops, speculated that it could be they just wanted to show that
they could do it or show that they were a presence. He said, "We
hit 'em pretty hard
we'll continue on schedule."
Now the color. Several hundred airmen's families were gathered
in huge crowds around a picnic table which was set aside for the
President. He went through a food line where he got pork
barbecue, cole slaw, hush puppies, potato salad, and a Pepsi,
plopped down at the table and proceeded to eat while several
hundred people, who had eaten earlier, watched him. This went on
for at least 15 minutes as Bush chatted with people at his table,
all of whom were children or spouses of servicemen serving in the
Gulf. The group included a six-year-old, Michael Langlais,
grandson of a Staff Sergeant plus two other teenagers and three
wives.
After the picnic, the President gave the remarks you heard. He
then plunged into the crowd for an extensive ropeline foray in
which he signed dozens of pictures being held forward by spouses
and girlfriends and family members of their loved ones,
presumably all of whom are in the Gulf. One woman held out a
thin, blue bracelet (Airman First Class Robert R. Mickle, Jr.)
that appeared to be one of those name bracelets of Desert Sheild
servicepeople and the President put it on his right wrist and
moved down the line. Babies were lifted. Toddlers were lifted.
Bush did extensive hugging, kissing, autographing, and posing for
pictures. The crowd seemed to be almost all women and young
children or babies. Many of them were clutching photographs of
servicemen they wanted Bush to autograph. One woman, Denise
Coyle, was sobbing and holding a picture of her husband she said
had volunteered in August. The President hugged her and kissed
the top of her head. He then headed to meet with POW families
outside the site of the pool.
There are two POWs from this base, but we don't know how many
family members were there nor whether other POW families were
brought in.

FORT STEWART, GEORGIA

AIR FORCE ONE FROM SEYMOUR JOHNSON TO HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD
No remarks on the plane or under the wing upon arrival.
Motorcade uneventful. While the President visited with spouses
at the Family Assistance Center, your pool spoke with Marlin, who
offered a readout from the Seymour Johnson event with POW/MIA
families.
Marlin characterized the meeting as a "pretty good session. I
think the President was very impressed with their courage." The
President met with the wives of two POWs and two MIAS and a
number of children. "They were all very supportive and said
their husbands believed very strongly in what they were doing,"
Fitzwater said. He added that the President "just wanted to pass
on the words of the President that we were doing everything we
could to find their husbands."
With regard to the Gulf, he said Brent Scowcroft had called
General Powell and had a "long conversation." No further
details.

JUST A FEW QUICK QUOTES FROM THE FORT STEWART EVENT
FORT STEWART, GEORGIA
FEBRUARY 1, 1991
The President was asked by a reporter as he worked the crowd if a
ground war is inevitable. The President replied, "I'm not making
any prediction."
The scene at Fort Stewart was similar to the two earlier events
in that the President spent 15-20 minutes working the crowd along
the barricade. Again, it was mostly women and children, with
soldiers in camouflage mostly in back of the Presidential podium.
Linda Hernandez, whose husband is serving in Saudi Arabia, was
one of many women standing along the front lines who watched the
President with long faces and sad eyes glistening with tears.
"It was wonderful," she said after the President's speech, which
was exactly what we needed. Later, Mrs. Hernandez was among
those with whom the President shook hands. She said, "God bless
you, Mr. President." He took her face in his hands and then
hugged her, while she was sobbing openly at this point and wiping
away her tears with her handkerchief.
In another barricade line episode, Mr. Bush encountered Kathy
Richards, who was filming the President with a camcorder, but
became very nervous as he approached. "Don't be nervous,"
Mr. Bush consoled her. "Focus this, you'll be fine." As the
President moved farther down the line, Mrs. Richards, who was
filming the event for her husband, another soldier in Saudi
Arabia, exploded with relief from the tension of the event.
"He'll never believe it, he'll never believe it," she screamed,
referring to her husband. She and her camera fell back into the
crowd as her knees seemed to give way underneath her.
One other bit of color: There were two large pea-green-colored
tanks, known as Bradley fighting vehicles, that were featured
near the Presidential podium.
