Page Twelve POOL REPORT #5 President Bush's Stand At The Alamo (Stadium) (San Antonio, Texas) October 8, 1992 President Bush took a two-mile jog around the Alamo Stadium this morning, running from about 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. His exact time was 18:37 for two miles. "It's a record at this age better than I've been doing by about 15 seconds." Mr. Bush arrived dressed in a Barbara Bush t-shirt and blue dress shirt and jogging pants. He first stopped by the neighboring Sunshine Cottage School for the Deaf. A man yelled out, "Mr. Bush, you did great last night," presumably talking about the Larry King show during which Mr. Bush questioned Bill Clinton's reasons for being in Moscow and protesting the Vietnam War while overseas. The youthful students crowded around for autographs. They gave him a new t-shirt which he put on over his other one. Bush then crossed the street to the stadium and took a few questions before running eight laps. Asked if he was questioning Clinton's patriotism on the King show, he said, "I said all I wanted to say about that last night. I probably will have more to say about that later." Other quotes: "I thought I expressed what was in my heart last night pretty well." "I'm gonna get a little exercise, get my body in shape for all the travails that lie ahead." At the sixth lap, San Antonio Police Sgt. Victor Balderas, fully dressed with gun and Kevlar, joined in the jog. He said later, "I just wanted to do it." Before returning to the hotel, Bush went back to the school to sign more autographs, one on the arm case of nine-year-old Roberto Palmas. Teacher Leslie Walter said the "kids were thrilled" by the visit. They are to hold a mock vote soon and she said Bush should do "pretty well." Paul Bedard-The Washington Times Air Force One Pool From S.A. To New Orleans Oct. 8 Marlin came back briefly and was asked about President Bush's comments about Clinon and Moscow and Vienam War protesting. "It's another case where he can't seem to tell the truth. It's another case of deception." Prior to that, he said, "We don't know why he went (to Moscow) or what he was doiny. In fact, he says he went by himself. E.J. Dionne this morning in the Post said he went with a group." Fitzwater said "we've had two conflicting stories and he won't say what the truth is." Asked about N why the protesting issue is important, Fitzwater said, "There's an important difference about protesting in foreign countries against America. There's a strong tradition and pantiotic sense of supporting our country on foreign shores." bedard-wash. times POOL REPORT #7 NAS New Orleans Tarmac Pool With Mary Matalin (New Orleans, Louisiana) October 8, 1992 Mary came over to chat with us and we again raised the issue of Clinton, Moscow and Vietnam War protesting. "It's another vintage Clinton. It's pathological deception it's a clear pattern of deception," she said referring to Clinton's changing story on his anti-war activities. Let's just let her speak: "In 1969 he writes about writing and organizing and marching and then he says in his 1982 race, when Frank White brings up the - his anti-war activities, he says, 'I don't know what he's talking about.' In other times he said 'I attended two marches just to listen to the speeches. It's a clear pattern of deception that characterizes all of his responses to any issue that he knows is going to be unfavorably received by the voters. That is the issue. For the President it's another issue - about demonstrating on foreign soil. Everyone is free in America here to petition your own elected officials, to affect policy at home. But when you go overseas, there is just something unseemly about it it's vintage Clinton." "Fr. McSorely said he's a major organizer of peace marches and demonstrations and anti-war activities. We are talking about the level of involvement in anti-war activities which he has minimized all throughout his career and now when some of these facts are coming out, he's now saying, he's now revealing some of the other facts which he has previously diminished. It's characteristic Clinton. Here's the issue: If we can't believe anything he has said about his past, how can we believe anything he will ever say about the future?" "On his anti-war activities in the past he has hedged, bobbed and weaved. He organized, he marched, he wrote, he spoke. According to Fr. McSorely, he was a main anti-war organizer. Why doesn't he just say that? It's like the draft. Why didn't he just say he was trying to avoid the draft? No one is questioning that. They're questioning why he always prevaricates on these issues." bedard-the washington times
