Dear Governor Sununu:
Thanks very much for taking the time to visit with me in
your office last Friday. With all the major national and
world events, with which vou and the President deal on a
minute-by-minute basis, it is certainly an honor that you
carved out a piece of your time for this citizen.
We covered a lot of ground in a short time. Surely, there
is now an enhanced ability to communicate on the subject
of Middle East arms sales. AIPAC is determined to do a
better job of this and to help other interested parties to
do likewise.
The U.S. -PLO dialogue provides America the opportunity to
assist in resolving a major problem but, also, responsibil-
ity for ensuring that substantive deeds adequately support
Arafat's words. At this early time, the Bush Administration
can, by being very publicly explicit as to what it requires
from the PLO, acquire great credibility in the area of
international affairs. Such credibility would likely
garner support and enthusiasm rather than criticism and
opposition from interested Americans.
Your candor in expressing dismay at the attention given
your Arab-American origins is well understood. Jewish
Americans indulging in such tactics are, indeed, people in
glass houses throwing stones. AIPAC is an issue-oriented
organization. We abhor personal attacks and try to discour-
age others from such conduct.
Your willingness to follow up on AIPAC's invitation for
President Bush to address our May, Policy Conference is
greatly appreciated. As busv as vou are serving the
President, vour interest in continuing contact is most
encouraging. Please be well and strong.
