Pay to Rebuild Iraq
What's the best way to make your country prosperous?
Declare war on the United States.
It's an old joke, sometimes told in bitter tones by veterans
who can't understand why they fought in wars against Japan
and Germany - only for the United States to help make those
nations industrial giants.
Not long ago Saddam Hussein and a few muddle-headed
liberals thought we ought to do the same for Iraq.
Saddam claimed U.S.-led bombing raids have inflicted
about $2 trillion in damage on Iraq. He thinks part of any peace
settlement ought to include war reparations froms he United
States, to help rebuild Iraq.
After World War II, part of the justification for massive
U.S. aid to West Germany and Japan was to help keep those
countries in the Western camp and out of the clutches of
communism. Now, in large part because of U.S. aid and
technological help, those countries compete against us. Both
have become quite prosperous.
Some put forth the same argument concerning Iraq. If we
don't help rebuild Iraq, the Soviets will - and will gain an
important ally in the Middle East. So goes the argument. It is, of
course, ridiculous. Iraq already leans toward the Soviet Union,
and has for years. U.S. aid has been taken for years - and
bought us nothing. There's no diplomatic logic in aiding Iraq.
There's no logic of any kind to such a proposition. Why
should billions of American dollars and quite a few lives be spent
to defeat a bandit nation - then billions more be poured into it
so its industries can compete with us? It just doesn't make sense.
President Bush already has rejected any thought of
reparations for Iraq. That's good. Far from paying reparations to
Iraq, its enemies should demand damage payments from
Saddam's empire.
