CHENEY PPB FROM: DOUGLAS P. BENNETT SUBJECT: Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (PA-WOC) This memorandum seeks your approval of the appointment of Calvin G. Sanford to the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin. The subject Commission was established in 1940 under a Compact among the five Potomac River Basin states to coordinate all water and related land resources in the Basin. The Commission consists of members appointed by each of the signatory states: Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia; and three Federal members appointed by you who serve without com- pensation at your pleasure. The two Federal members currently serving are from Maryland and Pennsylvania. This vacancy is due to the resignation of Arnold C. Sternberg who is leaving the area. I recommend the appointment of Calvin G. Sanford (Resume at Tab A), a Republican from Virginia. A businessman, farmer and merchant, Mr. Sanford has been a member of the Virginia House of Delegates since 1974. He served as a member of the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors from 1971 to 1974 and is currently a Director of the Bank of Westmoreland. Mr. Stanford resides in Virginia's 1st District, represented by Thomas Downing (Democrat), and is recom- mended AR7 for this position by the RNC and Jack Marsh. Approve Disapprove FORD 07622
