LUNCH WITH SENATOR HOWARD H. BAKER, JR.
Field KB
Monday, September 13, 1976
9-13-76
1P.M.
From: Jim Field (per Jim Baker)
I. PURPOSE
As Jim Baker indicated to you, Senator Baker has been a bit
discouraged the past few weeks with regard to publicity given
to his wife and his Vice Presidential selection possibilities.
II. BACKGROUND
Jim Baker feels that you should make the following points with
Senator Baker during your luncheon meeting today.
1. That you appreciate the leadership he exhibited in Tennessee
during the primary and his willingness to speak around the
nation on your behalf prior to the Convention.
2. You understand that he is going to be Bill Brock's campaign
chairman but hope that he will be the President Ford Committee
Honorary Chairman in Tennessee.
3. You should make the point that Tennessee is a key state, and
although polls in the state are not particularly bright at this
time, you and the President Ford Committee agree that
Tennessee must be carried in the fall and that we are going
to make every effort necessary to get this done.
NOTE TO GRF
BERRAD FORD LIBRARY
You should know that former Governor Winfield Dunn has been
cleared by Howard Baker and will probably become our Tennessee
President Ford Committee Chairman.
Dunn is fine but it must be cleared with
