1. I'VE REALLY BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS GET-TOGETHER
THIS MORNING.
IN A WORLD THAT IS SO OFTEN FILLED WITH CONFLICT,
CONTROVERSY AND CONFUSION -- IT'S ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO MEET WITH
50 OR 60 TOTAL STRANGERS WHO FEEL PRECISELY THE SAME WAY I DO
ABOUT OHIO STATE
...
WELL, I HOPE WE WON'T BE STRANGERS VERY MUCH LONGER.

2.
WELCOME TO THE WHITE HOUSE AND THIS BEAUTIFUL
ROSE GARDEN.
I KNOW THAT THE COMPETITION FOR INTERN POSITIONS
IN THIS PROGRAM IS VERY KEEN -- AND I CONGRATULATE YOU ON THE
PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS WHICH BROUGHT YOU HERE TODAY.
- 3 -
THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SEE YOUR GOVERNMENT AT CLOSE RANGE AND
PARTICIPATE IN ITS WORK WILL BE AN INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE.
I HOPE IT WILL ENCOURAGE AS MANY OF YOU AS POSSIBLE TO BECOME
INVOLVED IN THE AFFAIRS OF GOVERNMENT AFTER YOU GRADUATE.
- 4 -
3. I AM MOST IMPRESSED BY THE FACT THAT THIS INTERN
PROGRAM WAS INITIATED AND IS RUN BY THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES.
RACHEL DEMING AND HER COLLEAGUES HAVE DONE A FINE JOB IN
COORDINATING THIS YEAR'S PROGRAM.
HAVING SERVED IN THE
CONGRESS, I HAVE FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE OF THE EXCELLENT WORK OF
MANY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SUMMER INTERNS ON CAPITOL HILL.

4. A GREAT BRITISH STATESMAN, EDMUND BURKE, ONCE SAID
"THE ONE THING NECESSARY FOR THE TRIUMPH OF EVIL IS FOR GOOD MEN

I HOPE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH GOVERNMENT WILL
ENCOURAGE YOU TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THE AFFAIRS OF GOVERNMENT AFTER
YOU GRADUATE.
DON'T LISTEN TO THE DOOMSAYERS WHO WARN YOU
ABOUT BECOMING INVOLVED.

5. SPEAKING PERSONALLY, I HAVE FOUND PUBLIC SERVICE
A CAREER FULL OF CHALLENGE AND FASCINATION AND REWARDS.
WE NEED
THE VERY BEST PEOPLE IN GOVERNMENT IF AMERICA'S THIRD CENTURY IS TO

Washington Intern Program
The
University
of
Michigan
The University of Michigan Summer Intern Program in Washington D.C.
began six years ago, in 1969. Two University of Michigan undergraduates
were responsible for the Programs initial concept and design. The ob-
jective of the Program is to give undergraduate students at the
University an opportunity to learn about the inner-workings of govern-
ment thru direct participation in the governmental process itself.
Approximately, 300 students have participated in the Program over the
past six summers.
We place over half of our Interns each year on Capital Hill, with
Congressional Representatives from all over the country. (President
Ford had a University of Michigan Intern two summers ago) We also
place many of our Interns with lobbying groups, Federal agencies
and in media offices (i.e. Time, NBC, Metromedia)
There are many other universities who have students working here
for the summer, but the University of Michigan Program has several
distinctive features. First, we are an organized program, which
handles the administrative aspects for everyone on the Program,
including secruing the job contacts and placing students in specific
offices. We also find group housing for the students here in Washington
and this year we are living at Georgetown University. We also sponsor
our own speaker program during the summer to add to the educational
dimension of the program.
Another important part of the Program is our scholarship fund. For
the past six summer we have provided over 39% of our Interns with
a financial stipend to help them meet expenses in Washington. We
We have raised funds thru the University of Michigan Washington
Area Alumni Association, private donors and the University.
It is important to point out the the University of Michigan Washington
Summer Intern Program is a student-initiated and student-run Program.
And just as important is the support we have received from the
University and friends of the Program. The Career Planning & Placement
Office continues to give us valuable administrative assistance and
moral support yearly. The U of M Development Office and the U of M
Administration have helped us raise money for the Program. And last
but not least the U of M Washington Area Alumni Association and
Congressman Esch from Ann Arbor have welcomed us each year and have
helped made our summers here most enjoyable.
We are looking forward to meeting with President Ford.

The White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear Vern:
As you may know the University of Michigan annually
assists in arranging for a number of interns to live and
work in Washington for the summer months as part of their
academic experience.
From your experience on the Hill I am certain that you
are aware of the fact that interns are a fact of summer life
and that many of these young people go on to make very sub-
stantial contributions to the life of the country.
Recently I received a request from one of the University
of Michigan's students that I contact the President with a
view toward arranging for him to spend a few minutes with a
group of approximately 50 students from the University of
Michigan who are working here in Washington this summer. I
realize, of course, the demands which are made on the President's
time and the potential precedence of such a meeting. It does
seem, however, that the President's ties with the University
could justify the University of Michigan meeting and would
demonstrate his awareness of and interest in young people's
involvement in government.
I would appreciate it very much if you could bring this
item to the attention of the appropriate staff person and give
some thought to the possibility that such a meeting might be
arranged.
Sincerely yours,
Elford al A. Cederberg

THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
Note for Files:
Contacted Glenn Anderson's office shortly after noon
on Monday, July 22, 1975 to invite the Congressman
to a working breakfast with the P. on Wed., 7/23/75
on Turkish Aid. Left word to have the secretary call
me and they told me that Edna Mae handled his
appointments and she would call me back.
Called for Edna Mae on Tuesday, July 23 and left word
for her to call - told the girl that answered that Edna
Mae had not called me after my first call.
Nancy K. called for the AA on Tuesday, July 23 and
they left her holding for 5 minutes and never came on
the phone. Nancy K. called me and told me to mark
him as a no and forget about it.

Vera:
Here's the list for the Weds breakfast.
On the ones with an asterik, they've
been invited before.
Please divide the list up between
yourself, Nancy & Neta. Ask if you
can get an answer by noon tomorrow (ha)
The reason I'll need to know as soon
as possible, is that there will be
no substitutes, and the chef needs
to know how many to order for, the
usher's office to know how many tables
to set up, etc.
Thanks!!!!

Since we will be in Washington D.C. on-July 16, I and my fellow FHAer's would
be greatly honored if we could visit if only for a few minutes with Mr. Gerald

Dear Mr. President,
Mr. J. Gordon Small, Vice President and Bandmaster of
the 5th Michigan Regiment Band, has written the President's
Bicentennial March which he would like to present to you
personally.
The 5th Michigan Regiment Band is an active replica of
the original and frequently participates in parades, concerts,
shows and pageants around our state. They are headquartered
in Howell, Michigan and I am proud to have such a patriotic
group in my district.
Because this band has been so creative in writing the
President's Bicentennial March and because you, too, come
from the great State of Michigan, I would be honored if I
could present Mr. Small to you for a short picture-taking
session as he gives you a copy of the March. Such a meeting
could take place at your convenience and would add greatly
to the Bicentennial spirit in Michigan.
I thank you for your consideration and extend my best
wishes and personal regards.
Sincerely,
Bolan M. ROBERT CARR
