Ford Presidential Library.\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nWASHINGTON\nCEREMONY TO SWEAR IN CIRCUIT JUDGE\nJOHN PAUL STEVENS AS ASSOCIATE JUSTICE\nOF THE SUPREME COURT\nFriday - December 19, 1975\nThe Supreme Court\nDeparture:\n9:45 A.M.\nFrom:\nTerry O'Donnell\nATTIRE:\nFormal Morning Clothes.\nFORD & GERALD LIBRARY\nBACKGROUND:\nYou will participate in the ceremony to swear in Circuit Judge John Paul\nStevens as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.\nIn addition to the Justices of the Supreme Court, the ceremony will be\nattended by approximately 150 special guests including Members of Congress\nand the Administration.\nYou nominated Judge Stevens on November 28, 1975. He was confirmed by\nthe Senate December 17, 1975, by a vote of 98 to 0.\nYour participation in the ceremony, which is described in detail in the\nsequence, is brief and pro forma. Following the ceremony, you will take\npart in a,press photo session with Chief Justice Burger and Justice Stevens,\nand wives, then attend a reception for 150 guests.\nSEQUENCE\n9:45 a. m.\nYou and Mrs. Ford board motorcade on\nSouth Grounds and depart en route Supreme\nCourt Building.\n9:55 a. m.\nMotorcade arrives Supreme Court Building\n(Basement entrance) where you will be met\nby Mr. Frank M. Hepler, Marshal of the\nCourt.\n9:57 a. m.\nYou proceed to holding room. Mrs. Ford\nwill be escorted to the courtroom where she\nwill join Mrs. Burger and Mrs. Stevens.\n9:59 a. m.\nYou enter courtroom and take your seat at the\nGovernment Counsel's table, first seat to the\nright of the podium. Attorney General Levi\nand Solicitor General Bork will be to your right.\nNOTE:\nJustice-designate Stevens will be\nsitting in the well of the courtroom\nnext to the Clerk of the Court.\n10:00 a. m.\nSupreme Court Justices enter the\nCourtroom and are seated.\n10:01 a. m.\nChief Justice Burger opens the special\nsitting of the Court and recognizes you.\n10:02 a.m.\nYou rise and move to the podium immediately\nto your left to make your statement.\nNOTE:\nSingle speech card enclosed.\nPRESS POOL COVERAGE\nFORD & LIBRA\n2.\n10:04 a. m.\nStatement concludes.
