Langley Air Force Base, now celebrating its 60th Anniversary, was founded in 1916 as an experimental field and proving ground. Billy Mitchell proved his theory of air power by launching a bomber mission from Langley and sinking the OSTFRIESLAND - a captured German World War I Battleship, the largest of its kind at the time. From 1935 to 1941, Langley served as General Headquarters for the Air Corps. Since 1946, the Base has been the headquarters of the Tactical Air Command, which is now celebrating its 30th anniversary year. Langley was also used as a training base for some of our first astronauts.
