In reference to your call from Jay Johns concerning the Alexandria residence of the President, I tried unsuccessfully to reach Mr. Johns but Howard Kerr was able to talk to him later. Mr. Johns told Howard that he had been in touch with Senator Harry Byrd and Senator Byrd suggested he contact me. I have known him for a number of years and he is interested in historical preservation and has been associated with a number of historical properties throughout the state including the Stonewall Jackson home in Lexington. He says his group recently acquired the John L. Lewis home in Alexandria. They would like to rent the Ford dwelling in Alexandria and make it available for public inspection. Naturally, he would like to have left in the property as much of the furniture of the Ford family as possible. I understand they plan on charging admission which would be used to offset the cost of maintenance and rent. I think a major factor in any decision President Ford and his family might make will be the impact this would have on the neighborhood. You might want to discuss this with the family; however, if the decision is negative, I would urge a prompt response to Mr. Johns before the proposal gets momentum. FORD FROM: RIC SARDO Ric I called 514 Crownview this morning and have the following information for you: The Stewards informed me that the painting in the house will probably be finished today. The stewards are cleaning up as the painting is being done and anticipate that they will have everthing completed in terms of cleaning by this Friday. I would think Friday afternoon you might want to visit the residence to look at the work. My present plan is to detach the stewards next Monday, unless you find some future need for them. I talked to Wilbert and he indicated to me that based on his work today, his total bill would amount to $102.16. That includes a full day's work for August 21, 28, September 4, 11 (at $20 per day), $14 for today's work, and $8.16 for the drain pipe material he purchased at Loehman's. GERALD 514 Crown View Drive Alexandria, Va. 22314 December 9, 1974 Mrs. Pat Golubin Golubin & Warwick 130 South Royal St. Alexandria, Virginia Dear Pat: The following is for your files only, and is the list that we have discussed previously relating to various small dèfects to be taken into consideration when I depart the premises: Living Room: Venetian blinds of front living room window have one torn, crooked area. These have been removed to the attic for the duration. One large burn, about 1/4" X 1" near rear living room window, on carpet. Family room: Built-in hi-fi/cabinet has upper hinge that is torn. Kitchen: The Fords left a lovely kitchen wall clock which we are using, and which we will leave, of course, when we no longer live there. Hallway: Stairs leading to second floor have worn, uncleaned unoteik carpeting. One step in particular is bare. Master bath: There is a small corner area of loose tile where the toilet brush has been placed consistently. Master bedrm: The carpeting is very worn in the area of the front window, where it seems to have been from swinging a bed out, such as would come from having twin beds locked together except for purposes of changing linens. Nearby is a 1-foot square piece of carpet that is loose. FORD LIBRARY Small bedrm.: Adjacent to master bedroom, the small bedroom has a R. large burn in it and several smaller abrasion-type GERAIL wear areas. Basement: Window to south will not stay closed. We put a nail in it to secure it. S. S. room: The toilet paper dispenser had fallen off the wall. This list is as complete as I can make it at this time. The above is in no way to be construed as dissatisfaction with anything about the house. We like it very much and are enjoying living in it. Sincerely, THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 6, 1974 DOROTHY: I talked with Wilbert today and following is his list of the days he has worked and his total bill: August 1, 20 August 20 August 21 $20 August 28 20 FORD September 4 20 ANVOICE September 11 20 R. Carolyn FORD LIBRARY & CERALD THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON April 13, 1976 Mrs. Ford, I thought I would Xerox a copy of today' "house" report so that you could read it at your leisure and in that manner not hold you up on the telephone. If you have any questions, we can discuss them in the morning. All in all, I think things are coming along fine with the exception of the personality clash. Dorothy FORD LIBRARY & CERALO April 13 Louise's husband called Carolyn and said he thinks that the paint job is coming along fine now. 3:20 Called kay Watkins at Golubin & Warwick. The painting is done. Mrs. Rosenthal has inspected it and she is satisfied with it. Greg has inspected it and he is happy with it. The brick work is done. The slate work is done. Ladies have not finished planting yet. The pool is drained of all water but it cannot be painted until the weather is 70° for three days in a row. The chimney has been repaired but the squirrels will be removed later. She has yet to arrange for someone to do the windows, but she will take care of that. I asked specifically about Mrs. Ford's three questions and received the following report: The shutters were not taken down. The painters said because of the way they were fastened on the house it would be difficult for them to put them back on the house. They decided to wait until the tour is over and then go back and have the painters take the shutters down, paint on the back side, and then have a carpenter put them back up. The storm windows were taken down and painted on the bottom. There are three fences on the properth. The two out from the side of the house have been sanded down, rustproofed, and painted green (same as before). The long fence that is the length of the house has a whole lot of shubbery around it. Because of that it may be necessary to take down the fence and work on it separately. They were afraid that this would hurt the shrubbery so close to the of FORD LISRARY tour, so they decided to wait. They said it did not look bad. In fact, two of the new ORAALD painters did not know the fence was even there. After the tour they will get several estimates and suggestions as to what to do with this particular fence and then we can decide what to do with it. Kay (the Bookeeper and Secretary) also mentioned that when Greg went to inspect the house during the painting process that he was called across the street by Louise and received instructions from her as to what to do. He feels that perhaps he should call Mrs. Ford himself to "defend" himself since he did not receive instructions from me which is his usual route. 9/2/2 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON Carolyn + nancy, for your inform mation to reference. you may keep for 2 have a copy.
