HARFORD ast SUBJECT: PROGRAM MAGAZINE '75 As many of you have the advantage of direct access to the business community, we would appreciate your recommendations as to possible advertisers for this season's program magazine, and, if possible, your assistance in contacting your associates and suggesting to them the advantages of advertising in the Wolf Trap program magazine. The enclosed material contains pertinent information on the magazine and advertising rates. If you would like additional infor- mation, please contact Luke Bandle, Wolf Trap Foundation Director of Communications. For the first time, Wolf Trap has the opportunity to realize some income on the program magazine, distributed at the Filene Center each night during the season. Dondor Publishing Company will publish the magazine for the Foundation at no cost to us, and will assume responsibility for selling advertising. However, the Foundation as well as Dondor may sell adver- tising space and by so doing could generate revenue from the program magazine. He received approval of the minutes of the last Board meeting held September 14, 1974. 2. OPENING REMARKS BY THE CHAIRMAN Secretary Middendorf remarked that: a. Wolf Trap is a great center for the performing arts; one of the most outstanding in the United States. b. Financial solvency is necessary. Income must be increased and some reorganization is contemplated to realize this. We are moving toward a more business-like approach. FORD LIBRARY 1624 TRAP ROAD VIENNA, VIRGINIA 22180 (703) 938-3810 CREATED BY ACT OF CONGRESS, 1966 ADMINISTERED BY THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR THE ANNUAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING -2- February 21, 1975 2. OPENING REMARKS BY THE CHAIRMAN (continued): C. The Honorable C. Langhorne Washburn, as Chairman of the Development Committee, is developing a team effort for fund raising, and asks the help of all Board members, generally, and specifically to serve as Vice Chairmen of the Benefit, which will be held Opening Night of the Metropolitan Opera, June 23, 1975. 3. REPORTS a. Executive Committee - Mrs. Jouett Shouse, Co-Chairman As Co-Chairman of the Executive Committee, Mrs. Shouse reported that the Executive Committee now meets regularly on the second Monday of each month to follow more closely Board policies and their implementation. The Committee is working for better management, and for increased development activities to help meet Foundation needs. She said that the Committee has been cheered by optimism due to increased interest in the program, and by the substantial increase anticipated in Box Office returns in response to the outstanding program put together by Beverly Sills and John Ludwig. b. Program Committee Miss Beverly Sills, Chairman Miss Sills reported on behalf of her Committee that costs are up but anticipated receipts are up also. This is a non-profit operation devoted to quality, integrity, and imagination in programming. Wolf Trap is not just a booking house, and therefore a deficit is necessary to insure program precepts are honored and furthered. The 1975 Season is a well-rounded program with balanced variety. The Wolf Trap Company will appear with John Reardon and Jane Johnston in "Kismet". It looks very promising for another ARCO sponsored PBS television series. The Committee tried to pare costs but is not willing to cancel quality. It hopes for increased sums coming in, and is proud to present the Season '75 program. John Ludwig mentioned Season '75 highlights are: 1. More symphony, including a first visit by the Baltimore Symphony. 2. The Metropolitan Opera will return for 7 performances. 3. "Kismet" is back on the program. 4. Two midnight concerts by David Amram; one on world-wide jazz rhythms and the other on world-wide folk music. 5. The New York City Ballet will present its first Ravel festival. 6. The Emmett Kelly, Jr. Circus Mr. Ludwig gave recognition to the Artistic Administrator, Francis Rizzo, for his part in preparing the program. * FORD LIBRAR THE ANNUAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING -3- February 21, 1975 3. REPORTS (continued) C. Finance Committee - Gerald T. Halpin, Chairman 1. Expenditures should be reduced; contributions increased; ticket sales increased. 2. Financial material in the kits reflects an anticipated FY75 deficit of $400,000. 3. Packard Fund: The Packard fund portfolio is up by several hundred thousand dollars. The basic philosophy of the Packard Committee remains, i.e., funds are to be used to make it possible to present programs at Wolf Trap which would otherwise be impossible to present, such as innovative and special programs. Those programs selected for Season '75 Packard Fund support are "Roberto Devereux," "Kismet," "The Crucible," and the Metropolitan Opera. The Chairman reiterated the Board's need to address itself to the Foundation's overall financial situation, and commended Mr. Halpin, Douglas Smith and National Savings & Trust, and C. R. Smith for the handling of the Packard Fund. d. Communications - Mrs. Luke Bandle Mrs. Bandle reported that as of February 1, the Communications and Marketing Department had merged to form the Communications Department. The report included in the kit is a wrap-up of Department activity for the period September 14, 1974 through February 19, 1975. It highlights activity in the various activities of the Department and Mrs. Bandle noted how cooperative all media have been. Mrs. Bandle also reported that: Letters have been received near and far in support of the ARCO/ Public Broadcasting Service television programs; The Mailing List has been updated, through the mutual efforts of Mrs. Bandle and Mrs. Henry Hyde, Development Administrator, Office of the Chairman; The Program Magazine will be a break-even operation this year with an opportunity to make money. The Box Office has been further computerized. The new advertising agency, Rolle & Associates, has coined the* ruan phrase "Let This Be The Summer YOU Discover Wolf Trap". Dtusi LIBRARY THE ANNUAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING -4- February 21, 1975 3. REPORTS (continued) e. Education Committee - - Mrs. Elizabeth May, Chairman 1. FORD BENALD LIBRARY THE ANNUAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING -5- February 21, 1975 3. REPORTS (continued) g. Nominating Committee Miss Barbara Watson, Chairman On behalf of the Nominating Committee, Miss Watson presented the slate of officers, reappointments, and new appointments to the Wolf Trap Foundation Board, stressing that appointments were recommended on the belief that they should go to persons who would energetically contribute talent, time, effort, and money because of a deep interest in Wolf Trap. She also noted that the Committee felt appointments to the Board should reflect increased national repre- sentation as Wolf Trap is a National Park. She pointed out that there is provision for 45 appointments to the Board of Directors, and that there were many qualified candidates. The Committee felt that it would be prudent to leave two places open and that only 43 persons should be asked to serve at this time, which gave the Committee an opportunity to recommend 19 persons for appointment.
