Dear Mr. President,
I am writing this letter to ask for a
recommendation for admission to the University of
Michigan Law School. The draft of this letter was
addressed to my congressional representative for the
5th. district in Michigan; however recent developments,
as you well know, have changed the salutation of this
letter (twice). I would hope that you or a member of
your staff would have time to review my personal data/
military records and forward a recommendation from a
former Wolverine for a future Wolverine.
I have been a resident of drarksville, Michigan
(Ionia County) all my; life. I attended Michigan State
University where I received a B.S. degree in Chemical
Engineering. You offered me an appointment to the
Merchant Marine Academy in 1965, however I was unable
to attend due to physical disquahification. I entered
the Air Force in 1970 and presently serve as a trans-
port navigator at McGuire AFB, New Jersey.
I strongly desire to attend the University of
Michigan Law School and have completed the required
application procedures. Thank you.

Dear Mr. Liljenquist:
On behalf of President Ford, I want to thank
you for your letter concerning your admission
to Harvard University.
I am sorry this must be a disappointing reply.
As a matter of long-standing policy, the
President does not recommend people with whom
he is not personally acquainted. Therefore,
although your academic efforts are appreciated,
I think you will understand the President's
reluctance to depart from that tradition by
granting your request.
