I found the article on Governor Reagan to be of particular interest. Thank you for sharing it withthhese of us at the President Ford Committee. Much has been accomplished during the two years of the Ford Administration. The economy is steadily improving, more and more people are returning to work, no American troops are engaged in combat anywhere in the world, and the confidence in government, so lacking just two short years ago, is gradually being restored. Although much has been accomplished, much remains to be done. The President looks to the future optimistically and stands ready to face all challenges which might arise. Thanks again for the article. I hope President Ford can count on your support in the months ahead. Sincerely, Barbara D. Norris Director of Correspondence R. GEORTS FORD TRUNTY August 12, 1976 Pro anti Reason Mrs. C. A. Christopherson 809 Ridge Road Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57105 Dear Mrs. Christopherson: Thank you very much for your recent letter about the delegate selection process in South Dakota. I am sorry that you are not suppotting President Ford at the present time, but you are correct that this letter from the Committee will be a plea for party unity. But first, let me tell you that the type of delegate selection process which went on in South Dakota has occurred all across the country and the practice of limiting the opponent's delegates to the minimum, despite the outcome of a primary, has been practiced by both sides. In North Carolina, for instance, Governor James Holshouser, that state's first Republican Governor in 72 years, was prohibited a delegate seat at the Republican State Convention because he was a Ford supporter. Th is same phenomenon has occurred throughout the country as each side battled, sometimes bitterly, for every last delegate. It is extremely important, however, that all loyal Republicans keep this battle in perspective and remember who the real enemy is. After the Kansas City Convention, the Party must heal its wounds and unite together to defeat the liberal team of Carter=Mondale. If loyal Republicans become alienated by the Convention, then the nomina- tion will not be worth anything to President Ford or Governor Reggan. Thank you again for your letter, Mrs. Christopherson, and I hope President Ford will be able to count on your support this fall. Sincerely, Barbara D. TOTAL Comment June 13,1976 Rogers Morton, Presidential Campaign Committee, c/o The White House, Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. Morton: Re: Campaign commercials. As time is flying toward convention time, I am writing you directly. During the past week, I watched a Ronald Reagan campaign commercial in which when discussing tax reform, he stated thet he "would like to accomplish on a national basis what we did in California with Proposition I." This statement left the impression that some tax reforms were indeed accomplished. Governor Reagan's Proposition I was put before the California electorate in November 1973 as an initiative in a special election, and it was overwhelmingly defeated. I worked with the coalition as a League of Women Voters member which helped defeat Proposition I. In the interest of fair campaign practice, such misleading statements should be corrected, so that delegates in other states may have a truer picture of the facts. I hope this information is helpful. That is why I am writing to you today. Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan are in a virtual dead heat for convention delegates coming into the California primary. The winner of the California primary will take an extra 167 delegates to the convention. These 167 delegates will mean the margin of victory for the Republican presidential nominee. More delegates are at stake in California than New Hampshire, Florida, Vermont, and North Carolina combined! Ronald Reagan's stunning defeat of Gerald Ford in the North Carolina primary was a result of his aggressive media campaign in that state prior to the voting. That is why the Reagan California Fund has been established by the Young America's Campaign Committee. We intend to place spot radio advertisements throughout California a week prior to the primary. We have entered into an agreement with the nation's top producer of radio advertisements. FOR Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., the star of the television series The FBI, has agreed to do the narration for the ads. Production costs, distribution fees, etc., will be $25,000 and that amount is needed at once. Unless we receive that amount by May 25, 1976, the ads by Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., cannot be run. These ads are the most economical and effective method for reaching the millions of California voters. Ronald Reagan's chances of victory in California will be severely set back without them. As a result, his chances for the Republican nomination could be lost. That is why it is vital that you send what you can today. Please send at least $20 today. If you cannot send $20, we will be grateful for whatever you can contribute. But we must have whatever your generous contribution by May 25. 919-18th Street, N.W. Suite 800 Washington, D. C. 20006 -2- It is important to consider what Ronald Reagan's defeat could mean for the Republican Party. Consider the record of the Ford administration and the possibility of its continuing should Ronald Reagan lose the California primary: 1. There would be more appointments of left-liberals into the administration such as Charles Goodell and Nelson Rockefeller. 2. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger would remain, throughout Ford's term, continuing the policy of one-way-street detente. 3. The United States would continue its second-rate military posture and perhaps slip to third rate or fourth rate. 4. The United States would continue its policy of surrender of American possessions such as the Panama Canal Zone. 5. Deficit spending would continue unabated, without a voice of leadership coming from the White House. Before you decide how much to give, I should explain that the Reagan California Fund is an independent organization, entirely separate from the Citizens for Reagan campaign committee. Because it is an independent committee, the Reagan California Fund may solicit funds from individuals beyond the $1000 limit. Thus, if you have al- ready contributed the maximum $1000 to the official Citizens for Reagan cam- paign committee, you may contribute up to an additional $24,000 to the Reagan California Fund. In addition, while the official Reagan effort in California is limited in what it can spend on behalf of Ronald Reagan, our committee can wage an all-out effort to win in California without government-enforced spending restrictions. If any contribution could tip the scale for a Reagan victory, your contri- bution to the Reagan California Fund could be it. Please be generous, and soon. Thank you. Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., the star of the television series The FBI, has agreed to do the narration for the ads. Dear Sir: As a professional in the field of communications, I urge President Ford to take the offensive against Governor Reagan at once. Reagan has won votes by massive deception of the public as to the true consecuences of his policies. These points can be quickly grasped by the voters, if they are presented vigorously and repeatedly: 1) Reagan's policy of enlarging the military establish- ment would rean a substantial increase in taxes. 2) Reagan repeatedly complains that the Soviet Union is ahead of us in number of troops under arms. If he really insists on matching the Russians in man- power, it means bringing back the draft. 3) Reagan's stand on the Panama Canal Zone is based on sheer ignorance of history. It would lead to guerrilla warfare, with every country in South America lined up squarely against us. In short, Reagan's policies would make America an armed camp, with heavy new taxes, and the risk of a Vietnam-style war in Panama. President Ford must tell this to the public immediately, often and personally--no one else has his access to the media. If he doesn't do it now, he will find him- self doing it on a panic basis later-when it will be too late. Very truly yours, Milh Sitt GERALD LIBRARY E Reagan May 12, 1976 Mr. M. A. Christol (Jeannette S.) 1041 Anoka Place Pacific Palisades, Calif. 90272 I think you have missed one item that would bring Ford ahead of Reagan and then carried on it would get some votes normally that would go to either Kennedy or Humphrey. It's the parents and relatives and those poorly paid persons that ware for the MENTALLY RETARDED (not mentally ill) All the Kennedy centers are for handicapped retarded children specifically now called Developmentally Disabled. Naturally since both the two families mentioned above they feel a real heartfelt interest in the Retarded. When Reagan came out with his $700 Million surplus, it hit the newspapers the same day the parents of the Retarded learned the Reagan administration decided that to save money they would phase out the hospitals for the Retarded and put them into the community. This sounds like a very fine humanitarian idea, but when you look at it closely you find they were to find "profit-making "nursing homes and contract with them to care for the kids. When it goes into the "profit-making" the individual gets less and less as medical costs rise. And the Nursing homes were then given $19.00 per day per child when it was costing the state $42.00 per day. to care for them. Make a nice statement about PRIORITIES $23.00 as the most a Retarded child gets in a Nursing community facility where the child needs jound the clock medical care plus programs for education???? it is impossible yet Sarah Jane Moore got $33.00 per day and the cost to the taxpayer for the trials for the Moore's. Harris's, Hearsts all those psychiatrists! And not even an MD in the nursing home where 90 profoundly retarded handicapped children including hydrocephalic, bizarre kids, quadreplegic, etc A statement about priorities for the retarded, handicapped, and certainly not turning it all over to the States. There is where you will hit Reagan. I have all the clippings about the disclosure as I went to Sacramento and gave testamony that got $4.3 million for air-conditioning for the kids at Pacific State due to flies etc and it was at that time we smoked out Reagan's plans. He backed down, but they still dont have the air-conditioning completed and that was three years ago. I think you would be amazed at the numbers of parents of these kids that go for Kennedy and Humphrey just on this -one issue all over the country. SERVICE food luck Jenny Christal tol FRANCIS Re. A. Christopherson\n809 Ridge Road\nSioux Falls, South Dakota 57105\nDear Mrs. Christopherson:\nThank you very much for your recent letter about the delegate\nselection process in South Dakota. I am sorry that you are not\nsuppotting President Ford at the present time, but you are correct\nthat this letter from the Committee will be a plea for party unity.\nBut first, let me tell you that the type of delegate selection\nprocess which went on in South Dakota has occurred all across the\ncountry and the practice of limiting the opponent's delegates to\nthe minimum, despite the outcome of a primary, has been practiced\nby both sides.\nIn North Carolina, for instance, Governor James Holshouser,\nthat state's first Republican Governor in 72 years, was prohibited\na delegate seat at the Republican State Convention because he was a\nFord supporter. Th is same phenomenon has occurred throughout the\ncountry as each side battled, sometimes bitterly, for every last\ndelegate.\nIt is extremely important, however, that all loyal Republicans\nkeep this battle in perspective and remember who the real enemy is.\nAfter the Kansas City Convention, the Party must heal its wounds\nand unite together to defeat the liberal team of Carter=Mondale. If\nloyal Republicans become alienated by the Convention, then the nomina-\ntion will not be worth anything to President Ford or Governor Reggan.\nThank you again for your letter, Mrs. Christopherson, and I hope\nPresident Ford will be able to count on your support this fall.\nSincerely,\nBarbara D. Governor\nReagan's Proposition I was put before the California\nelectorate in November 1973 as an initiative in a\nspecial election, and it was overwhelmingly defeated.\nI worked with the coalition as a League of Women\nVoters member which helped defeat Proposition I.\nIn the interest of fair campaign practice, such\nmisleading statements should be corrected, so that\ndelegates in other states may have a truer picture\nof the facts.\nI hope this information is helpful.\nYours sincerely,\nEncire Eunice E. C.\nDear Sir:\nAs a professional in the field of communications,\nI urge President Ford to take the offensive against\nGovernor Reagan at once. Reagan has won votes by\nmassive deception of the public as to the true\nconsecuences of his policies.\nThese points can be quickly grasped by the voters,\nif they are presented vigorously and repeatedly:\n1) Reagan's policy of enlarging the military establish-\nment would rean a substantial increase in taxes.\n2) Reagan repeatedly complains that the Soviet Union\nis ahead of us in number of troops under arms. If\nhe really insists on matching the Russians in man-\npower, it means bringing back the draft.\n3) Reagan's stand on the Panama Canal Zone is based\non sheer ignorance of history. It would lead to\nguerrilla warfare, with every country in South America\nlined up squarely against us.\nIn short, Reagan's policies would make America an\narmed camp, with heavy new taxes, and the risk of\na Vietnam-style war in Panama.\nPresident Ford must tell this to the public immediately,\noften and personally--no one else has his access to\nthe media. Christol (Jeannette S.)\n1041 Anoka Place\nPacific Palisades, Calif. 90272\nI think you have missed one item that would bring Ford ahead of Reagan and\nthen carried on it would get some votes normally that would go to either\nKennedy or Humphrey.\nIt's the parents and relatives and those poorly paid persons that ware for\nthe MENTALLY RETARDED (not mentally ill) All the Kennedy centers are\nfor handicapped retarded children specifically now called Developmentally\nDisabled. Naturally since both the two families mentioned above they\nfeel a real heartfelt interest in the Retarded.\nWhen Reagan came out with his $700 Million surplus, it hit the newspapers\nthe same day the parents of the Retarded learned the Reagan administration\ndecided that to save money they would phase out the hospitals for the\nRetarded and put them into the community. This sounds like a very fine\nhumanitarian idea, but when you look at it closely you find they were to\nfind \"profit-making \"nursing homes and contract with them to care for the\nkids. When it goes into the \"profit-making\" the individual gets less and\nless as medical costs rise. And the Nursing homes were then given $19.00\nper day per child when it was costing the state $42.00 per day. to care\nfor them.\nMake a nice statement about PRIORITIES\n$23.00 as the most a Retarded\nchild gets in a Nursing community facility where the child needs jound the\nclock medical care plus programs for education???? it is impossible yet\nSarah Jane Moore got $33.00 per day and the cost to the taxpayer for the\ntrials for the Moore's. Harris's, Hearsts\nall those psychiatrists! And\nnot even an MD in the nursing home where 90 profoundly retarded handicapped\nchildren including hydrocephalic, bizarre kids, quadreplegic, etc\nA statement about priorities for the retarded, handicapped, and certainly\nnot turning it all over to the States. There is where you will hit Reagan.\nI have all the clippings about the disclosure as I went to Sacramento\nand gave testamony that got $4.3 million for air-conditioning for the\nkids at Pacific State due to flies etc and it was at that time we smoked out\nReagan's plans. He backed down, but they still dont have the air-conditioning\ncompleted and that was three years ago.\nI think you would be amazed at the numbers of parents of these kids that\ngo for Kennedy and Humphrey just on this -one issue all over the country.\nSERVICE\nfood luck\nJenny\nChristal\ntol\nFRANCIS\nRe.\nAMERICAN\nthe\nPac Pal Ca 90272\nU.S.POSTAGE\n1976\nUS1Gc\nAPOLLO SOYUZ 1975\nCommittee for Ford\n1200 18th st N.W.\nWashington, D.C.\n20036"
