RONALD REAGAN TV FOR PRESIDENT FORD COMMITTEE
5-MINUTE
The great American philosopher, Thoreau, once said that if a man
was coming to his home to do him good, he would flee for his life.
I get the same feeling when politicians tell me that they know what's
fair; that we should trust them; that we can depend upon their
promises; that they will somehow see to it that "government"--
and that means the muscle of Washington--is committed to what they
see as the best way to spend your money.
Four years ago, you'll remember something of the kind was pro-
posed as a thousand-dollar giveaway to every man, woman and child.
When the question was asked, where will the $1,000 gifts come from?
The idea was dropped.
But here it is again, the same old shell game dressed up in new
language. Jimmy Carter was the chief architect of his party's
platform this year--a platform that calls for huge new spending
programs. More big government. More taxes. In fact, it's been
estimated that 33 programs proposed in Mr. Carter's platform would
cost $183.5 billion. That cost averages out to about twenty-six
hundred dollars per family!
New language doesn't hide old facts. Four years ago, millions
of Democrats and Independents turned their backs on the course set
at the Democrat convention. This year the same thing is going to
happen. This platform may bear the name "Democrat" on its cover,
but what's inside doesn't reflect the common sense, the values, the
hopes and dreams of millions of Democrats who work hard for every
dollar and who think in terms of next month's rent or mortgage

A great Democrat--a former Presidential candidate, Al Smith--
40 years ago saw his party taken over by a leadership elite of im-
practical theorists. He went on radio and told the nation he was
"going to take a walk." May I respectfully suggest that millions
of Democrats and Independents do the same this year--walk over to
a party that truly reflects your dreams and values? As proof that
it does, I offer the platform (HOLDS UP REP. PLATFORM) of the Repub-
lican Party, the platform on which President Ford stands.
It speaks for most Americans, the productive workers, the strong,
vital center of American life. It speaks in plain language about
plain facts. Here is a sampling of what it says about jobs and
earnings and saving. And, about promises.
QUOTE "We believe that Americans are fed up with and frustra-
ted by national government that makes promises and fails to deliver
"The American people are beginning to understand that no govern-
ment can ever add real wealth (purchasing power) to an economy by
simply turning on the printing presses or by creating credit out of
thin air. All government can do is confiscate and redistribute
wealth. No nation can spend its way to prosperity; a nation can
only spend its way into bankruptcy
"Every dollar spent by government is a dollar earned by you
"We believe that your initiative and energy creates jobs, our
standard of living and the underlying economic strength of the country.
Government must work for the goal of justice and the elimination of
unfair practices, but no government has yet designed a more productive
economic system or one which benefits as many people
"

President Ford stands on that platform--a platform that is in
tune with many other issues American workers and their families
are concerned about today. Here's what it says about some of those
issues:
- --About defense, it says let's make America Number One:again
by achieving defense superiority as the best insurance of peace.
About welfare, it says, let's reform welfare at the state
and local level; don't "federalize" it and turn it into a guaranteed
annual income.
-About abortion, it supports the efforts of those who seek a
constitutional amendment to end abortion.
--About the captive nations of Central and Eastern Europe, it
supports Radio Free Europe, the Voice of America and Radio Liberty
which bring hope to the peoples of those lands.
-About energy, it says we must get at our oil and gas reserves
and reduce dependence on foreign sources by first cutting political
redtape and bureaucratic obstacles.
--About education, it says use busses for transportation, not
as instruments of social reform. And, yes, it says let's move
authority in education back to the states and local school districts
and away from Washington.
You have a clear choice on November 2nd. President Ford offers
you this platform. He's on the job now, and he wants to stay on the
job, using this as a blueprint for a better America. As a guide
which will help us build our own lives in freedom, helping our families
and neighbors and strengthening our communities.

Mr. Carter promises many things--huge new spending programs
and a balanced budget. You and I know there can't be both. Presi-
dent Ford knows it, too. Please look at both platforms. When you
do, I think you will agree that President Ford's is the one that
makes sense for America. Then, join me November 2nd to vote to
keep President Ford on the job. Thank you.

Jimmy Carter favors cutting the defense budget five to
seven billion dollars. If you're with your children
right now, look at them. They're very much involved. If
Mr. Carter and his party make a mistake in how much to
spend for defense, our children could pay the ultimate
price. In what precious coin would that price be paid?
Freedom? Lives? Doesn't he owe it to you to explain cutting
defense right when the Soviet Union is engaged in building
an aggressive force of staggering size? President Ford is
on the job and he stands on a platform which calls for
defense superiority as the best insurance of peace. Let's
keep him on the job.

RR: (HOLDING COPIES OF DEM. & REP. PLATFORMS)
You know inflation won't stop taking money out of your pocket
till government stops spending more than it takes in. Compare
the Presidential candidates. Mr. Carter says he's for a balanced
budget, but he designed his party's platform, and it's filled
with promises of new spending programs. More big government.
More taxes. President Ford has vetoed nine billion dollars'
worth of new spending bills. His party platform says, let's
get government out of the way so you and your fellow citizens
can make our economic system grow to create jobs and a better
life. Let's keep him on the job. Vote for President Ford
November 2nd.

RR: (HOLDING COPIES OF DEMO. & REP. PLATFORMS)
These are the party platforms of the Republicans and the
Democrats. I hope you'll get copies and read them. Jimmy Carter
was the architect of this one (HOLD UP DEMO. PLATFORM). Despite
what Mr. Carter says about Washington, his platform adds up
to more big government and more taxes out of your pocket. It
calls for a guaranteed annual income; for a compulsory national
health scheme; and for centralized economic planning of our lives
(masquerading as a jobs bill). The estimated cost of 33 spending
programs in the Democrats' platform is $183.5 billion. Put that
in terms of your family. It averages out to about twenty-six
hundred dollars a year in new taxes for every Amèrican family.
Is it more big government you want? More inflation? I
don't think it is. Neither does President Ford. He's running
on this platform (HOLD UP REP. PLATFORM). It matches the
hopes and dreams of most Americans. It recognizes that you
want government to be more efficient. More responsive.
And that you want it to get out of the way so you can control
your own life. That's the kind of government President Ford
and the Republican party want, too. They'll work for it.
I hope you'll join me November 2nd in voting. for President
Ford. Let's keep him on the job.

RR;
We're hearing a lot of talk this season about tax reform.
Jimmy Carter talks about shifting the tax burden and closing
"loopholes". One day he even said he favored having everyone
above the median income level pay more income tax, That's
one out of every two taxpayers! As for the so-called "lood-
holes", guess who put them there? Mr. Carter's party, for
it's controlled Congress for 20 of the last 22 years and has

written the tax laws. This year, Mr. Carter designed a
party platform that pledges--QUOTE--"a government that will
be committed to a fairer distribution of wealth, income and
power' - - UNQUOTE. Those are code words for more confiscation
and redistribution of the earnings of all those who work and
produce. President Ford, by contrast, stands on a platform
that makes sense to taxpaying Americans. He recognizes that
inflation is the Number One destroyer of jobs, robber of
earnings and wrecker of savings. To control it, we need
lower taxes and a curb on reckless spending by Congress.
President Ford will work for that. Let's keep him on the
job by voting for him November 2nd.
