Could you please supply us with Ford-Dole buttons which we happen to need
rather urgently.
The Older Americans can be told to get them within the states but they love
to wear buttons and a token would help.

OLDER AMERICANS.
Mary Stevens Carroll the Older Americans Coordinator in Montana
telephoned the Older Americans Desk this morning to say "As I listened
to Jimmy Carter debate the President last night on his conduct of foreign
affairs, I heard him take on a belligerent tone. He said, "I would
consider another Arab boycott an act of economic warfare and I could
act accordingly!!' - then I heard the President tell of his. efforts
to stabilize things in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. I realize
we are "at peace" thank God! No boy is facing the draft and an awful
thought struck me. Every war in this century has been under a Democratic
president. World War I under Woodraw Wilson, World War II under Roosevelt,
Korean conflict under Trumann and Vietnam under President Johnson.
The peanut farmer from Georgia is appealing but if the debate showed
anything, it revealed a lack of knowledge and experience in foreign
policy by the man from Georgia and his tone when he said, " I would
consider another Arab boycott an act of economic warfare and I will
act accordingly!!"
It made me realize this is not just another election - would history
repeat itself, would we be facing another war, the Democrat would say
"No", but as Al Smith once said, "Let us look at the records!"
Jessica Swift from Vermont who is 105 was suggested as an Honorary
Chairman for Older Americans in her state. In a firm voice she replied
that she would like to represent her state but her calendar was so full
she really didn't believe she could do justice to the effort for a few
weeks.

The News release from Frank Church and the apparent overlooking of the Older
Americans' problems by the President has brought a deluge of calls for
President Ford to address the Older Americans concerning their problems. He
must show his interest and concern in a speech similar to the one given February
9, 1976. Attached is an issue which shows the good things he has done. He needs
to remind Older Americans that he has them in mind as he works to keep down inflation.

Victor Hruska called (254-7310). He had been to the
National Council on Aging meeting to which the President
and Carter had been invited. Roslynn came and made
a political pitch. The President sent Matthews who
was okay but little substance and everyone else
on the ticket was most political--including Senator Church,
Daley and Governor Pryor of Arkansas who closed it with
another political speech. Only Dr. Flemming and
Hruska were there who were ardent Fordites. This confirms
my belief that we must have a major older American speech---
but let's talk about it.

FROM:

Jim Field advises that he forwarded to you our requests
for meetings with the President for the following groups:
(1) Older Americans Advisory Council - Attached list
indicates members of Council and we would also like to
include approximately 30 State Chairmen for Older
Americans for Ford. If possible they would like the
meeting to be the latter part of the week of Oct. 18th.
I also understand that appointments will soon be made
to the Federal Council on Aging and it might be a good
idea to somehow tie the two together since that would
involve Bertha Adkins and John Martin.
(2) National Advisory Committee People for Ford (Celebrities) -
Attached is a list of members. As I'm sure you know this
is a difficult group to tie together logistically and if
at all possible the easiest time would be Monday or Tuesday
the week of Oct. 18th.

Older Americans Rally in Philadelphia.
Older Americans of People for Ford Committee in Philadelphia would
like to have an Older Americans Rally on October 25th at Living
History Museum in Philadelphia.
They would show a film and have Dr. Fleming speak with Lloyd Nolan
as the celebrity. They thought the Heinz campaign would finance
it but they are afraid of offending the Gray Panthers who are for
Ford. Their budget is $1,000 for rental of hall, $1,000 for buses,
and $500 for speaker travel.
Are there any funds available to help?

Bill Baroody and Milt Mitler have been working on this and say
the President will be only available Monday and Tuesday. However,
they aren't having any response. He wonders if we could do anything
about this. He is not interested in our Chairmen or Advisory Council.
I think we could get the Advisory Council in if we could get Hotel
accommodations but it would be awful short notice. I think it is
better if we can get to the President the next week with our group.
Any ideas?

SUBJECT: Round-up of Oct. 15 and 16.
FROM: Suzy Yazbeck.
October 15, 1976
1- Elly Peterson called me to tell me that John Shroat from Indiana
was here and wanted to know what had been done concerning mailings
of material and brochures in Indiana. I typed a memo to Elly Peter-
son citing all that had been done and enclosing lists of names to
whom brochures and material were sent. Gave it to her personally.
2- Pat Bailey PFC/New Hampshire called to say that they were having
difficulty finding a chairman and they needed your help. Asked for
you to call John Mudge - (603) 228-0175.
3- Velma Shelton from the White House called enquiring about the list
of names to be invited to the swearing in on Oct. 21st. I told her
the approximate number. She suggested the White House invite them.
I told her we would call her back tomorrow for reply. She said we
could talk to Mr. Mitler, if she couldn't be found.
4- Pam from Boise, Idaho called to enquire about brochures. Told her
they were sent and that she would be receiv ing them any time now.
5- Latter part of the day started calling the Advisory Council people
to invite them on Oct. 21st. Mrs. Ramirez said she could come but
could not afford it. She is expecting an answer on that.
October 16, 1976
(Mrs. Walker B. Carroll, Montana)
1- Called to say that she represented a group of retired businessmen
who want to remain anonymous. Attached is a memo I wrote to Tom
Ruffin, who upon reading it said it was not really important as
everyone tries to come up with an idea or another. (P.S. She doesn't want
mail to go to her house
2- Mailed extra brochures that were requested to:

Mrs. Janet Goske (California) 700 (new chairman)
Mrs. Judy Peachee (Rich. Virginia) 600
Mr. Neal Acker (Montg. Alabama) 600 (at the request of Catherine Putman)
3- Andy Supplee of Philadelphia called enquiring if you had authorized the
funds for the Oct. 27 event. I called Elly Peterson and she said yes
they were authorized and that they could go ahead with plans. She also
told me to tell him to contact Martin Hamburger. Also that Lloyd Nolan
was attending as celebrity. I called him back immediately and gave him
the message. He was very pleased, but thought that LLoyd Nolan couldn't
make it as far as he knew but that he was going to re-check about it.
4- Typed memo which Sylvia prepared to Mr. Mitler at the White House
concerning the list of names of the Advisory council, State Chairmen,
and staff members to whom the name of Mr. Walter Parker, PFC, Illinois
was added. Please find the above mentioned in our outgoing file.

5- Have reprinted 50 copies each of the material we have with the help
of volunteers.
6- Brochures are almost out. I brought up the last remaining (1½) box.

RE: Swearing In of Federal Council on Aging.
Am delighted that the Advisory Council has been invited to the
White House for the Thursday morning ceremony.
Even with the complications it would be wonderful to invite State
Chairmen.
We are organized in forty-five states - it would be expensive I
know and I'll understand if it is not possible, but it would be a
big boost to have them in.

Mrs. Walker B. Carroll, State Coordinator in Montana called this
morning at 9.30 a.m. She said she represented several retired
businessmen who wanted the National Committee to know the following:
"According to a news times service dispatch from Plains, Georgia
and printed in the Great Falls Tribune September 1st, Jimmy Carter's
balance sheet and income tax returns showed that last year when
he spent his entire time campaigning for the Presidency, not only
did his personal fortune increase by $225,000 but he also earned
nearly $137,000.
His total income last year was $136,926 more than he had ever made
before.'
These retired businessmen would like the Committee to ask how
Jimmy Carter could have earned the above sum of money when he spent
the whole year campaigning. They are not questioning his taking any
legal income tax deduction, just the former question.

NEWSLETTER
Older Americans have responded to every request and we are
grateful. We know that by working together for a better America
has brought mutual respect. We have exchanged ideas, alerted
each other, inspired and helped each other. Appreciation from
the strong leadership and experience of President Ford has been
evident.
We are grateful to those who transported Older Americans to the
polls. We say "thank you" to those who spent hours on the
telephone and contacted their friends. They made an immeasurable
contribution. We learned that Older Americans are great team
workers when they feel they have a well qualified candidate
for the most important job in America.
A million thanks for your never failing cooperation. We'll never
forget it.

President Ford in a commercial on TV mentions the $750 for
catastrophic illness. This has been misinterpreted and many
by phone are telling me he is taking away $750 or making them pay
$750 more.
There is great confusion.

There is outrage that CBS on October 24th, on the "60 Minutes"
showed a complimentary spot featuring Chip Carter for the second
Sunday night. The cry is for CBS "60 Minutes" to present the
Fords.
Carter has been in New York City talking primarily to Senior
Citizens. They want the President to say the same things he said
in his speech at the White House. We have sent the President's
speech to all state chairmen but Maria Redo says we need the
President to say it in a newspaper ad or on TV.

The woman who represented the Democrats couldn't begin to compare -
your appeal both to women and to men and the "hairdo" was great!
