DUNLOP AS SECRETARY OF LABOR\nTUESDAY-MARCH 18, 1975\n2:00 P.M. - The East Room\nFrom:\nTerry O' DonnelloD\nBACKGROUND:\nJohn T. Dunlop was nominated as Secretary of Labor on February 8\nand confirmed by a voice vote in the Senate on March 6, 1975. He will\nserve as the fourteenth Secretary of the Department of Labor. A\nbiographical sketch of the Secretary-designate is attached at TAB A.\nYou will greet the Secretary-designate and Mrs. Dunlop in the Red Room\nand then proceed to the East Room where you will deliver remarks\nbefore approximately 300 guests, including Members of the Cabinet,\nMembers of Congress, Administration officials, and relatives, friends\nand associates of the Dunlops. Following your statement, Judge Charles\nFahy, Senior Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals of\nthe District of Columbia Circuit, will administer the oath, Secretary\nDunlop will deliver remarks, and you will invite the guests to proceed\nto the State Dining Room for coffee and pastries.\nThere will be full press coverage of the East Room ceremony and no\npress coverage of the informal reception. A list of platform guests is\nattached at TAB B. A list of special guests seated in the front rows\nis included at TAB C. Suggested remarks will be forwarded separately.\n2.\nSEQUENCE:\n2:00 p.m.\nYou depart Oval Office and proceed to the\nRed Room to greet Secretary-designate\nand Mrs. Dunlop.\nNOTE:\nThe platform guests (TAB B)\nwith the exception of Secretary-\ndesignate and Mrs. Dunlop,\nwill have departed the Red\nRoom to take their standing\npositions on the platform just\nprior to your arrival at the\nRed Room.\n2:05 p.m.\nAccompanied by Secretary-designate and\nMrs. Dunlop, you proceed to the East Room\ncenter doors, pause for announcements, then\nmove to the platform near the East Wall.\nYou proceed directly to the podium.\nTo your left several feet from the podium will\nbe Secretary-designate Dunlop, then Mrs.\nDunlop, then Judge Fahy.\n2:07 p.m.\nYOU DELIVER YOUR REMARKS.\nFULL PRESS COVERAGE\nATTENDANCE: 300\nAt the conclusion of your remarks, you ask\nJudge Fahy to administer the oath, then move\nto the Secretary's right as the oath is recited.\n2:14 p.m.\nSecretary Dunlop delivers remarks. Dunlop,\nof Belmont, Massachusetts, to be Secretary of Labor. He will succeed\nPeter J. Brennan who\nhas\nresigned.\nDr. Dunlop will continue as Coordinator of the President's Labor-Manage-\nment Committee and will serve as a member of the Economic Policy\nBoard.\nDr. Dunlop has taught economics at Harvard University since 1938 and\nwas Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences from 1970 to 1973 and is\ncurrently a Lamont University Professor. He was Chairman of the\nConstruction Industry Stabilization Committee from 1971 to 1973 and has\nserved as a member of the National Commission on Productivity since\n1970.\nFor the last 25 years Dr. Dunlop has served on numerous Presidential\nboards, panels, committees and commissions studying labor disputes and\nhas had a long association with the Labor Department dating back to\n1938. During World War II, he worked with the National War Labor\nBoard, and was a consultant to the Office of Economic Stabilization and\nthe Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion. Since that time he\nhas served as a member or consultant to a number of State and\nFederal organizations on matters relating to labor relations and economics.\nDr. Dunlop is the author and editor of a number of books and has made\ncontributions to other books as well as professional journals.\nHe was born in Placerville, California on July 5, 1914. He is married\nto the former Dorothy Webb. They have three children and reside in\nBelmont, Massachusetts.\n#\n#\n#\nPLATFORM\nPresident Ford\nVice President Rockefeller\nDr. John T.
