PARTICIPANTS SENATORS Harrison Williams Jacob Javits Gaylord Nelson Robert Taft John McClellan Warren Magnuson Edward Brooke CONGRESSMEN Albert Quie Marvin Esch Daniel Flood Remarks I. I am happy to sign this Supplemental Appropriation for summer youth employment and recreation which contains funding which I requested in March for critically needed summer jobs for youth. 2. Disadvantaged youth in our country are among the most severely hurt by the current economic situation. Many of them depend on summer jobs for the money they need to be able to go back to school in the fall, and for the working experience that helps prepare them for a productive life in this society. 3. This Resolution will finance about 840, 000 jobs for disadvantaged youngsters this summer. It will also support youth recreation and transportation programs in the coming months. 4. The immediate needs of our youth must be among our primary concerns. Therefore, as I sign this Resolution, I am asking the Secretary of Labor as well as the State and local program sponsors to move at once to put these funds to work helping our young people.
